Thoroughly enjoyed this talk by Mexican philosopher Carissa Véliz on privacy, and why there's no democracy without privacy.
She chose an apt story to make privacy tangible, even for the "I have nothing to hide" type crowd.
Collecting data vs. not collecting data that's not essential to provide a service or run a society has been, and can be a matter of life and death.
She talks about a well documented event from WWII: Nazis managed to find and kill more Jews in the Netherlands than in France because the country collected more data on people.
"Of all the countries occupied by Germany during World War II, the Netherlands had the most robust pre-war population registry."
This was due to effrots from Jacob Lentz, an official who was obsessed with the idea of creating the perfect, fool-proof identity card.
She goes on:
"
In contrast, France had made a conscious decision back in 1872 not to collect certain kinds of data about people, including things like
whether you were Jewish and where your grandparents lived. And because of that decision in France, the Nazis only found 25% of the Jewish population versus 73%.
The contrast is in the hundreds of thousands of people. It matters and we should learn from history."
There's far more in the video but I don't want to give it all away. Well worth watching.
⚠️ Discord is testing UK age verification using a third-party vendor called Persona.
This may involve ID + biometric checks, and Discord says submitted info can be stored for up to 7 days before deletion.
Persona’s policy also mentions pulling data from public sources + third-party databases.
Privacy folks: read carefully before proceeding.
