They will
Weep lead
At our empathy,
Common decency,
In their antipathy
They will kill
Bodies,
But never
Souls.
Robert Burns and Mary, Queen of Scots: how the poet shaped the enduring cultural legacy of the executed monarch
The queen was the source of much debate among 18th-century thinkers.

Today is Burns' birthday, let's celebrate!
'There's no other poem like it': Why this Robert Burns classic is a masterpiece
Tam O'Shanter is a rip-roaring tale of witches and alcohol, but it has hidden depths. On Burns Night this Sunday – and 235 years after the poem was published in 1791 – Scots everywhere may well be treated to a masterwork with a unique, universal appeal.

To celebrate, here’s a playful #verse by Jenni Wyn Hyatt. @siffrwd (Of note: it’s the first iambic pentameter submitted to FreshOut in quite a few years! More please?) Jenni was born in Wales, but now lives in #Derbyshire. #poetry #poetrylovers
Classic LPs for vinyl returnees No.42
Poet & The Roots. Dread Beat & Blood
To some extent British reggae has always been political in one way or another, but its epitome is this album showcasing (for the first time) Linton Kwesi Johnson's poetry against a dub-inflected backing. Its not comfortable listening but as a document of how politics can make music compelling there are few better examples. Its a reminder that music has meaning! Vital stuff!
The flexing fingers
Squeeze the dignity
From your pores
And leave you
Breathless
Without the weight
Of your personal
Gravity.
I thought I might give this a try again. The occasional improvised poem. It's been a long time, but someone here has me inspired.
Photons
Are untouched
By time,
And experience
The beginning
And the end
Simultaneously.
It felt that way
With us.
The nuclei
Of atoms might
Deform in
The direction
Of time,
Making it
Immutable,
Woven into
The very fabric
Of being.
I wish my
Heart knew
That.
Call and response,
Your heart
In perfect darkness.
The altar where
One hundred thousand
Prayers are asked
And answered.
My atoms
Knew yours
Before
Coalescence,
Before the
Stars we
Were born
From had
Mass.
Forever is
Everything
And nothing
At all.

You feed
On the
Black lungs
Of despair,
As if it’ll
Help you
Breathe.
The air is
Clean,
But you
Are not.
Let her sleep,
For she has razed
Mountains,
For she has raised
The sea,
And in her dreams
She moves the
Stars.
These sorrowed
Bones remain
unbroken,
And when
I cannot stand,
I will crawl
Ever toward
The light.

Starlight travels
Billions of miles
To terminate
Behind your eyes,
And you still find
Yourself unworthy?
#senryu by returning contributor, Teji Sethi. @tejisethi13 Teji is a poetry disciple from #India who loves concocting blends of chai & haikai. By day, she’s a therapeutic nutritionist; by dusk, she wanders into the nostalgic lanes of her childhood, gathering verses from memory. Teji has dedicated the past 4 years to curating Triya, a bilingual space for #haiku, tanka & #micropoems. #poetry
I told myself
“Remember this
Moment,”
But all I can recall
Is the desperation
In my voice
When I said it.
