I have a lot of sympathy for people that are trying to build and support a Linux or BSD distribution and trying to stay clear of projects that accept LLM code.

There is so much that makes up a distro it's inevitable that some downstream package is likely to end up being affected by LLMs.

Big game of whack-a-mole at the moment.

Patience and no rushing to judgements is required I guess. At least, as far as projects that do not have an explicit yes/no policy with respect to LLMs anyway.

In the last few years, the hobbyists introduced a galaxy of modernized terminal emulators with features like "tabs" and "uses a modern toolkit that matches the rest of your desktop".

Apparently 90% of them can't actually emit the bell noise. They either use defunct tools like libcanberra, or they're waiting for a Wayland extension to delegate the task to a compositor. Is this not a day-2 feature for a terminal?

Meanwhile, freaking Xterm spruced up with libXaw3d in Xwayland just works.

So I dunno if people talk much round here about but I just sold a Big Tool and I'm using the proceeds to get other tools that I need more at this moment, including I just paid yesterday for a XR-18 digital mixer, which comes at an incredibly low price, and has a lot of happy users on the interwebs.

I'll be waiting possibly till July or later for it to arrive, but that's fine. Been waiting this long to get my gear wrangled, at least now I can start planning the signal routing with my old analog mixer.

Good friend/cohort of mine owns an X32rack and is quite happy with it as well. Indeed, both our units have the Ultranet feature, so anytime we are working together he will be able to use all my channels in his main mix as needed.

What clinched it for me, though, was the software support.

My current big mixer is a 16 channel Allen&Heath, which has dual sweepable mids EQs on the strips that swing way out of their weight class. And so, there was an A&H mixer that was in consideration as well, with similar features, but twice the price tag, and I was not at all unwilling to pay that price tag, because I assume there would be that much better quality.

But, where A&H is only supporting Android and Apple, Behringer not only has desktop apps for the XR-18, they have 32- and 64-bit apps. I think there was even source code available for some or all of that.

I mean, easy friggin choice. Nice going, Behringer.

I've been using a digital camera for many years and as a result have a lot of photographs.

                        How many is a lot?

                        53190

                        Yeah, lots.

Despite having spent lots of time trying to create meaningful directory names it's still not easy to always find a photo I'm looking for.

What would actually be a USEFUL tool for AI would be something that I could run locally which could examine each of my photos and build some kind of free-text database of their contents which I can then grep.

But as far as I can tell nothing along those lines exists. Why have AI tools spent so much time trying to create faked photos and not producing something actually valuable?

                                    github.com/finix-community/fin

An (experimental) Nixos system using finit.

The maintainer reached out to me on discourse and cued me in on this project after I posted about my Liberated Systemd overwrite posted above. I didn't know anyone was working on this, but I'm pleasently surprised!

It's usable right now and (according to them) would benefit from some more experienced users to test things out.

I've not tried it yet (I expect some stuff to not work, but I've seen some setups from folks that appear to have full DEs and WMs). However, I'm glad there's a real PID 1 replacement that is working in NixOS.

It's all built on top of nixpkgs, so it looks like (and the maintainer confirmed) you can just fold this into your existing config and the fix whatever systemd services that weren't ported.

I'll probably play with this soon. Very cool!
