Ubuntu now wants 6GB of RAM during a global memory shortage — talk about terrible timing for PC users.

Canonical has raised the minimum RAM requirement for 26.04 LTS by 50%, now requiring at least 6GB of memory alongside a dual-core 2GHz CPU and 25GB of storage.

Welp, jumped through the BIOS hoops and able to boot and install Linux on the cheap Windows 11 Acer laptop I got a couple years ago and haven't used 30 hours because I hate Windows 11.

Now, do I buy a separate drive to slide in and put the Windows 11 drive in a drawer or format the one that came in it... 🤓

Dylan Araps is back and working on dfm (Dylan's File Manager), a terminal file manager written in C. If you know Dylan's work from KISS Linux, neofetch and other projects, you know what to expect — tiny binary, no dependencies outside of POSIX/libc, vim-like keybindings and does absolutely nothing when idle. Looks like a solid suckless-style file manager worth keeping an eye on.

I tried it and really liked it, already submitted a SlackBuild to slackbuilds.org so Slackware users can easily install it.

Cybrkyd's post looks beyond Apple and asks whether age verification is starting to move into the operating system layer. It points to a merged systemd change and Flatpak discussions as signs that Linux components are beginning to account for age checks, potentially in response to regulatory pressure. The article is framed as analysis and open questions, especially around how age could be verified on self administered systems where the user is also root.

Ok! Initial build script for writerdeckOS v2.0 is done.

I even coded a menu to allow for easy change of default word processor / text editor.

The Terminal Edition defaults to using wordgrinder, but the follow word processors and text editors are loaded into the system and its easy to swap over to them:

                                    - WordGrinder
                                    - Tilde
                                    - Word Perfect
                                    - Joe
                                    - Emacs
                                    - Vi / Vim
                                    - Nano
                                    - Micro

And it's easy to install and run a custom app (text editor or otherwise!).

Also, I added nmtui - a Terminal User Interface for Network Manager to connect to the internet if needed (eg to install a new app or to configure synced cloud folders).

I need to run a couple more QA tests for this and then I'll start putting together the installation media. After testing that on a couple of laptops, I'll push it out officially!

Heavy drama in the open-source world of...

                                            ...Office Document Software.

Nextcloud, originally a fork of ownCloud, has launched Euro-Office, a fork of OnlyOffice (pissing off OnlyOffice). Collabora is weighing in and issuing comments against both OnlyOffice and Euro-Office while, itself, forking Collabora Office Desktop from the Document Foundation's LibreOffice. Document Foundation has now resumed LibreOffice Online which competes against Euro-Office and OnlyOffice.

                                            (I think I've got all that right 😅 Correct me if I haven't! 😂)

                                            ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 I unironically love this!!!! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Document software may appear boring on its face, but Microsoft Office is a big reason why folks still stay with Microsoft OS and don't (can't...) move to Linux. MS Office 365 is often used as a bridge to allow folks to move to Linux while still using Microsoft products in the browser but that solution still keeps them tied to closed source solutions.

Development of Free and Open Sourced Software (FOSS) office products, both desktop apps and online web apps, is a core and key element to allowing FOSS solutions to thrive - both for individuals and organizations.

This level of drama and fighting is indicative of a lot of effort and attention being thrown into this arena. I'm confident over time it'll settle and different projects will merge back together or at the very least borrow and build upon each's efforts.

Read and get your fill of the drama here: theregister.com/2026/04/02/eur

TLS and SSH rely on Certificate Authorities (CAs) for authentication, but they also present a vector for Man in the Middle attacks. What if you could set up your own CA to reduce your exposure?
