soc.octade.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
@vkc Yeah, I hate that. Combine it with long-running BUGS that no one seems to even bother considering as such, and all in all #mastodon is a pretty shitty app.
"cesspool.domain" pff. It's called "people I disagree with", mom ; Between reasonable and cesspool I'd chose cesspool anytime. Oh yeah, that, too: The #fediverse is simply plain BORING.
> If your instance blocked "cesspool.domain", you won't see that reply
Yeah. Hate-that-shite ; The *opposite* of dialogue.
Have a nice safe 🥱 day.
Just an occasional reminder that disabling replies is the #1 requested feature from Mastodon.

So I renamed my send button at snac... 🙂
@Flipboard @molly0xfff Misses the point of improving people / developing people NOT just Tech - we have had similar systems of messaging and mostly #ICQ and forums have been good but not really humans developing humans - just 1-way interaction - like #Mastodon being a great engine but most of us are socially crap as drivers and can't find a way to increase #Trust, measure people on the fly, practise talking to them - so you get 0-participation or organising as any 'social' and just a donation page, tech debugging and nothing else to contribute to all this despite us all working in A MILLION places with our own resources we could do something with instead of complaining about #Trump all day or thinking #Fediverse is totally different.
People themselves are the weak point and NOBODY IS DEVELOPING PEOPLE (HUMANS TO HUMANS). Tech people are developing computers instead hoping for a better future.
Nuts to expect better people just from installing #linux or something and I know a bunch of almost-retarded (excuse me but just to be short I mean over introvert or recluse hobbit even with kids) and that frankly isn't good enough / keeps problems going!
Humans need to get used to more types of humans and the rest comes with it... #Communication
More #Communication needed and organised... if you want real #SOCIAL!
@Gargron Why did nobody vote by the way?
Also I want to use this opportunity to say we need more #INTERACTION itself as a focus branch of Mastodon (which is mostly text-based). This in turn will give you and us benefits...
If I say "Mastodon doesn't directly encourage social events or activity beyond aesthetics" I think it's mostly true.
A branch of Mastodon to help gather groups by 1 or two keen people like me (free) goes a long way from text-mainly ways to audio chats and really bonding / finding relativity more.
Because even the best social engine (like it is now) does maybe near-0 for helping people pool together to interact REGULARLY.
The non-talkers / too-polite / inhibited Tech people NEED HELP to express more personally and develop their social side as part of the sport of social and moving together...
We can find a focus and help others talk aloud with each other as the main sport of socialising and finding others who want to be found at the same time as problem-solving as a bonus individually or for Mastodon...
ANSWER = #JITSI
#Jitsi chats are a simple enough way and SUPER-quick to join as individuals into circles to say hi and what we're looking for / what we can help with.
So even as text it would be great to have a regular circle but even after text something like audio chat is something great MORE COMPLETE AS A SOCIAL. #WHATSAPP ETC HAVE AUDIO RECORD for example...
A pool of people (as resources) is not really being used currently as there are a lot of us with free time and resources to #GIVE!... #SHARE ETC
E.G Fixing a laptop audiably, live-talking about German politics, graphics design etc etc.
People don't know how to speak / be more human is my main point. Need a place to practice! Text isn't human-enough today.
Tech is developing hardware and software NOT developing people (which is part of solving the human psycho-social problems).
A person holds value in themselves better in many ways than an Americanised computer, and even if it ahuman is not as much data a person holds their #principles and #history with whatever they do AND can consider others and their principles a lot better.
TECH IS LARGELY ERASABLE / OVER-WRITABLE / CAT AND MOUSE / #RUGPULL ETC. People hold it long term better and can explain to others,,,
I find assuming people to hunt people, job, events for themselves and hunt other humans isn't really great and could be more easier with a bit of help from the Social engine itself! - WE NEED MASTODON (living staff) TO HELP PRACTICE SOCIALISING AT SPECIFIC MINI-EVENTS / MINI-CHATS!
I'm not saying #Mastodon takes all responsibility but ME recommending and doing all this means a different / strange things rather than trusted Mastodon or testing crew being happy to test / try it...
For a social movement it needs to be socialising itself else just empty...
( 🖼️ ok some cat pictures and single replies / arguments but not really developing people, justs develops the empty-ish tech site increasingly Americanised even if it isn't all).
It's like a social engine going to church only on Sunday's (or in this case #Caturdays') and that's it - not really progressing life, staying in cat-pic mode / non-deep discussion. It's killing us.
For more-real socialising, we need more than just one or two text replies - actually a Jitsi chat / RTMP is A

i got banned from #bluesky for over-celebrating the death of a racist, fascist, bigot. i'm still celebrating 🥳
i went from angry to thankful that i'm now in the #fediverse
i get more engagement in months on #Mastodon than i did for a yr w/ 1.4k followers on #bsky
i don't know if this will become true, but as long as #bluesky refuses to return to me all of the content i created there before they banned me, i will continue to #Resist those appeasers
If you just left Bluesky today to join or come back to Mastodon, welcome (back)!
We are glad you are here with us
About Bluesky and federation:
Edit: There might be some mistakes, and my information could be outdated, but the point still stands - Bluesky wasn't built on 100% federation from the start.
I've been wondering about Bluesky's decentralization again. I can't think of any reason why I'd want to self-host Bluesky in its current form. I cannot 100% self host "my own Bluesky".
Their main selling points for building their own protocol were easier migration and better discoverability, but right now there's no simple way to migrate my Bluesky account to my own instance. And hosting the centralized parts yourself isn't really possible, or if it were, not affordable, they haven't made that feasible, by design, it seems.
Even if you self-host a PDS, Bluesky's Relay only indexes up to 10 accounts from it. You can run more, but they won't federate, the central infrastructure decides what gets seen. They control this (source: https://docs.bsky.app/blog/self-host-federation#:~:text=For%20a%20smooth%20transition%20into,for%20everyone%20in%20the%20ecosystem.). You can self-host a PDS (Personal Data Server), but you still depend on Bluesky's centralized Relay and AppView. There's no production-ready alternative infrastructure from what I gather.
It feels like I'd be renting a room in a hotel that someone else is running anyway, when I want my own hotel.
If Mastodon gGmbH vanishes tomorrow, my instance keeps running and federating with everyone else. If Bluesky PBC vanishes, the ecosystem would need to scramble to stand up replacement infrastructure that doesn't really exist yet.
ATProto keeps getting evaluated on its promises while other systems get evaluated on their merits. The "portability" selling point depends on infrastructure that isn't mature enough to actually catch you if Bluesky falls.
I trust W3C, the builders and fathers of the World Wide Web, ActivityPub and the Fediverse.
#Decentralization #SelfHosting #SelfHosted #Mastodon #Fediverse #Bluesky #Servers
The #US has "Truth Social" (build on Mastodon code) kinda as it's "official social media"
And #Europe has it's own #Mastodon instance in the #Fediverse
I know what I'd prefer!
I've recently migrated to this personal / single-user #Mastodon instance and finally got around to writing about that "journey”, explaining how and why I did it.
https://shellsharks.com/own-my-social
It is but one more way in which I am pushing further into adoption of #indieweb #ownyourweb #ownyourdata #ownyoursocial ideas.
Honestly, the hardest part about the move was emotionally leaving infosec.exchange, I explain why in the post (https://shellsharks.com/own-my-social#thanks-to-infosecexchange). Thanks for everything @jerry 🧡!
As an admin of (some) instances, I would really love an (iOS) app for moderation🤔
There are a lot of apps currently for the frontend but not so much backend

A lot of new people are checking out the #Fediverse for the first time via the #Forkiverse instance. This post is for any of those newcomers.
There are a ton of resources out there that’ll help you get started and better understand how this whole thing works but don’t hesitate to ask around if you have questions.
Visit the sites of other instances, find accounts, make connections, federate!

@vosje62 @Eetschrijver @Frieke72
@stux
TLDR;
➡️ *People left to it on their own have no idea what to do socially*
➡️ They / we stay flawed alone or don't help others as a dedicated / integrated sport / merging endeavor
We need to fix this by DOING SOCIAL AS A DEDICATED #SPORT / #DEVELOPMENT...
not just giving people tech
⬆️ That's the #TLDR
Below is more but optional
I feel like nobody responds anyway so I have read over my own writing but if you can't see the heart or why to practice it, then it's dry and almost game over as it is almost already...
So...
It's not just #Meta but people who are choosing to be less human too, daily or online!
A lot of people said they would do things in person but it's also an excuse for some who wouldn't do anything.
So we need to pump that up as State's are not going to do it for us. We do it.
All the socials are measurably the same one-way posts, a few short-depth replies, even the same bickering / propaganda / misunderstanding / deflection found elsewhere online.
Rather than sorting personal politics - people are falling into the external and empty shit rather the stuff they can control (themselves and somewhat their family and personal politics between them).
Not all the same as Meta here, it's a bit better here but evidently even more *dry* / empty and similar without the slop (as comparison - not saying I like slop but it's empty / unsocial almost without dedicated people helping others do it!).
OPTIONALLY MORE....
==================
#Tech posts are a plenty here but near-nobody developing human social by talking / building in that way.
➡️ Frankly #alien to most tech people to do human interaction without machines being the focus / work / topic...
I talked to someone making the website for a charity and has good ethics, but asking them actively, they told me they don't want to be a part of any charity work, like nothing - even after saying to them "I'm prodding just to check what you mean" eventually it turns out they prefer machine work almost only with it being a bit better as a boss. This is not enough if humans are the problem / what we need to develop!
Charity without #charity work?
Weird.
#Mastodon = Lots of #debate about machine code, which language is better or the hardware, cat pictures #Caturday - the best this or that, some great 1-ways posts, how to fix the tech that they are breaking as an endless cat-and-mouse game which could turn out to be a big waste of tech time, a few tips but not much socially for everyone to hop into and audio chat afterwards or improve the art of talking to people / expanding existing mentality!
Of course it could involve tech and ALL topics but not really being THE focus or mono-work / mono-conversation.
❓ I suppose we should let the untrained work it out? ❓
➡️ No - clearly doesn't work if you leave uneducated do it or want to improve real social.
We / you / me / whoever is up #Dansup should #DIY this thing like you and other have done in other projects...
So can't be near-0 or just one-off comments for everyone - need:
- building (socially) / yes online posts and pages,
- leading / a bit of moderated chats (some chat like this or audio chats after for the #brave / #pioneer)
- increasing #trust,
- #investment (in our own circles as a circular economy in itself). etc
It is all possible simply with audio talks from time to time, in a 3-click no account safe-than-zoom #Jitsi chat)
A WHOLE WORLD WAITING FOR US TO DEVELOP_>
Yes ISOLATION is by choice for most and answer also about Meta being non-human (when people are not doing it regardless of AI or bad guys etc), All these sites have nobody to talk to - not even fans to fans (crowd-sourcing / limiting liability etc).
I think there would be plenty enough extrovert to start things and spread out to normal conversation - who wouldn't want in their teens healthy chat and even the weird to become expert in identifying the right and wrong / being more extrovert / fixing things...
My account counts for years of trying and that's why I'm asking else I'd do it by myself with a few (but it's that dry nobody wants to use even the people with free time).
Again way to say it.... (repetition)
Yes...bad people doing bad.
But No... the good people are not doing enough together anyway. They choose not to respond or go into depth or DEDICATE TIME TO OTHERS!!
Imagine - half hour for others and being more clear that's what we are doing and making audio circles (can be nameless) to conclude / enjoy things!
And near-no replies from you the reader or Stux on this
Not having a weekly thing with your fans or monthly type of driver / catchup and gather folks online is a missed opportunity and stifling their progress too - a semi-organised audio chat helps get things straight or fans helping fans etc-
I'd do one circle but needs a bit of a existing crowd to come and then maybe you leave us to it.
I don't have lots of followers and you do - purely as numbers and mass - followers would come / read about it.
Otherwise... the answer to your post is of course money (the root of all evil as it pretends to be unpolitical / unethical / neutral / and isn't (banks are highly political).
So who cares about people... AND DOING THE WORK?
⬆️ Readers do reply ! ⬆️
And if you want to do it reply!
This is not a hate post.
Plenty of tech devs.... but just not actively social devs....
Not real *human* development... so to your post I can't say non-human but I can say short-depth, low interaction and I'm sure we all see this and can measure it... hell try reply in depth like me and see how many replies you get asking for ANY comment about any of this !
(you don't have to reply to all)
See my other post for more on this or bookmark / save / open in a tab and forget me!
https://qoto.org/@freeschool/115866456037196387
I hope you get this and entertain the other post above to really say it in other words and hit home how IMPORTANT this is, together.
100% we need to be more socially / humanly developing.
The rest below is just the comments from this thread saying it's about money (which I agree but are they doing social also? 'll have a look at their accounts)... hmm

Follow + Hide Boosts is seriously one of the best low-key features of Mastodon. I use it all the time. It's wonderful.
So if you follow me or want to follow me but really don't want to see my boosts because I boost a lot? PLEASE USE IT I WILL NOT BE OFFENDED IT IS A GOOD FEATURE. IT IS SO GOOD.
Here's Space Catitude talking about it:

Basically "hide boosts from" is wonderful.
(Y'know what else is? Time-limited mutes. Goddamn I love that so much. I use it, too.)
I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' snac to 2.87 here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/30679
It's churning through GitHub Continuous Integration checks (1 of 3 passed so far which is a good sign the other two will complete successfully).
It's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.
p.s. the other day I read your napcop proposal and I dig the acronym. ;)
