And just like that, the Elon Musk-Sam Altman trial is over. A jury in California took less than two hours to determine that Musk waited too long to file his lawsuit against his former business partner, ending the three-week trial in which Musk alleged that Altman and OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman committed a "breach of charitable trust.” Read more from @npr:

"The problem isn’t that OpenAI is necessarily going to behave badly. The problem is that we are building systems whose usefulness increases the more intimate the data we give them, and whose economic value increases the better they can infer our intentions. Financial personalization can be extraordinarily beneficial, but it can also become the most sophisticated form of business segmentation ever invented. A searcher knew what you wanted to find. A social network knew what made you react. A financial assistant will know what you can afford.

And then there is Plaid. A widespread fintech infrastructure, in 2021 it accepted a $58 million class action privacy, data uses and transparency settlement, although it did not involve an admission of guilt. Today Plaid offers services to manage connections and erase data, but the precedent reminds us of something basic: in finance trust is about more than policy statements.

The regulatory dimension also matters. The Consumer Finance Protection Board’s open banking rules aim to give users more control over their financial data, facilitate portability, and prevent unwanted secondary uses, including the use of financial data for targeted advertising unrelated to the requested service. That’s the right direction: that the user can move their data, yes, but under clear constraints of purpose, retention, security, and liability."

This was invented for . However, I'm finding it really nice for screen readers:
RTK rewrites output from chatty terminal commands that produce a lot of output, often in complex tables, in order to make the output 80 to 90 percent shorter. Just put rtk in front of the command you want to compress. So "rtk git status" instead of "git status". And you can be sure the compacted output is correct because it's just using regular expressions and deterministic rules under the hood to rewrite output from the tools it knows about. If it doesn't know about a particular command, it just passes the output on unchanged.
                  github.com/rtk-ai/rtk
Now I've got to figure out how to wire this up in
so it'll just happen without me typing rtk all the time.

                                      Interesting situation:

The third-party doctrine is a precedent in US jurisdiction that says: when you voluntarily give information to third parties, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy in that information.

It enables the government to simply buy sensitive data that you "voluntarily" handed over to third parties, as in: every company whose services you are using.

Without any warrant that is usually needed, should they want to seize the very same information from you, directly.

The same doctrine also enables judges to tell your lawyer to hand over sensitive documents that you shared with an "" provider to create or polish it using "AI" – the respective provider being considered such a third party.

So, should you support the proposed Surveillance Accountability Act (H. R. 8470), because it tries to ban this overreach?

Or should you oppose it, because that precedent is a brilliant and powerful way to contain, or even roll back, the spread of "AI"?

Is it possible for models to be trained ethically, deployed for good and not harm, in a way that doesn’t destroy the environment? Yes.

Is it likely for that to happen? Not in my lifetime.

Similarly, it is *possible* to use intrusive mass surveillance for the good of humanity, but the overwhelmingly likely outcome is that the tech will be used to exploit and crush vulnerable people.

Same thing with guns. Is it *possible* for a population to be well-armed and entirely responsible for the use of their weapons? Yep. Is it likely to happen? Hell no.

AI tech is interesting, and it is morally neutral. But human nature being the way it is, it is exceedingly naïve to think that there’s any chance that its development will benefit society instead of exploiting it.

Show me some robust pro-consumer-rights regulation around this tech, and maybe I’ll begin to believe you. Until then, your optimism is unwarranted.
