(Although remember that nothing is private on Mastodon. Your private mentions/direct messages are not end-to-end encrypted so your instance admins – and anyone hosting a hammer to their knees – could be reading them all. If you want to talk privately, use Signal or Delta Chat. Never share sensitive information on “private” messages on Mastodon. That goes double for our friends in Gaza.)

OpenZiti is a self-hosted zero-trust networking platform that lets you access services without VPNs or exposing ports.
Each connection is identity-based, end-to-end encrypted, and limited per service.

Instead of full network access like traditional VPNs, it only allows access to specific services -- reducing attack surface.

systemd adds an optional “birthDate” field to user records, letting Linux apps access sensitive age data for compliance 📄
Critics warn this creates privacy risks, centralizes sensitive user info, and could be misused if poorly secured, making Linux systems a potential target for data leaks 🔐

Meta will remove end-to-end encryption from Instagram DMs on May 8, restoring its ability to scan message content for moderation and legal compliance 🔍.

Privacy advocates warn the shift marks a retreat from private messaging, while Meta cites user safety and fraud prevention as justification 🔒.

To everyone saying userdb adding a birth date field is a slippery slope towards escalating age verification, please consider that user fields storing real name, work room number, and telephone numbers have been a thing as far back as pre-Linux UNIX. Further, systemd userdb can store user avatars. Is this also a slippery slope towards face recognition and government control?
Although the change is surely motivated by recent laws, it really isn’t that weird on its own, and certainly isn’t where we should be focusing our attention.

Here you can see Ubuntu asking for my REAL NAME and PHONE NUMBER when setting up a new user account (scary!) (for clarity, the "scary" is meant sarcastically)
