G'morning advocates. I just got an email from Reclaim The Net about Meta's latest court case: reclaimthenet.org/meta-youtube Here's selected content as a TL;DR

"Meta argued that verification should happen not inside individual apps but at the operating system level, handled by Big Tech gatekeepers Apple and Google... Doing it at the level of the phone is just a lot cleaner than having every single app out there have to do this separately"

"It is a proposal to verify the identity of every smartphone user, for every app, at the OS layer... Zuckerberg proposed this from the witness stand while simultaneously solving his own legal problem. If Apple and Google own age enforcement, platforms like Meta are no longer responsible for it and companies already under serious antitrust scrutiny for their control of app distribution would be handed new authority as identity gatekeepers for the internet*

What's our next move? Is it "check" or "checkmate"?

As tech ad revenue continues to be threatened by the AI spam problem, we are going to see increasingly frantic and abhorrent "Proof of Humanity" "solutions" being pushed in various directions. The surveillance stuff is kind of a nice bonus to help get the politicians on board. This age verification stuff is only the opening salvo.

              Proposed age verification interstitial dialog.

An old-fashioned software dialog box with the title "Age Verification" that asks "Are you 18 years of age or older?". The two input buttons are labelled "Maybe" and "NOYB".

"Age verification" does not such thing; its purpose is to make every online interaction traceable to the human(s) behind it. A free society cannot tolerate this.

snooping on our messages!

The European Parliament is currently deciding its position on the proposed second extension of the
‘temporary’ interim ePrivacy derogation 2025/0429(C0OD), with trilogues expected to start in early
Spring 2026. It is vital that the Parliament acts now to rule out mass snooping on our private
messages.

This controversial law was already criticised strongly by many in the Parliament when it was first
extended by the Commission, leading to a Parliament position which stated that after the first
extension, the derogation "shall elapse permanently”. The derogation is sometimes referred to as
"Chat Control 1.0" because it suspends the fundamental right to privacy enshrined in EU primary and
secondary law. This right is supposed to keep us all safe from arbitrary or untargeted snooping in
our digital and physical private lives.
