Last night I was watching a video from a YouTuber I enjoy. He’s likeable and reviews all kinds of smartphones. I find it relaxing, it makes me smile. In yesterday’s video, he showed his partner switching from an iPhone to Android and sharing his impressions.

At one point, the partner started saying that iOS is "dumber2 in many ways, specifically talking about the keyboard, because "Apple’s privacy is stronger, so they spy on you less". To me, that’s a feature, not a bug.

He went on to say it’s absurd, that he would actually like Amazon Alexa, Google, Android, iOS, and so on to know everything about him, so they can make things easier and provide more convenient features.

I was honestly stunned. So I went to check the comments and... they were all focused only on the fact that, "finally", he introduced his boyfriend in a video.

As long as this is how the average user thinks, big tech will keep their balance sheets locked tight and their hands on everyone’s data.

Look, this has been common knowledge for almost a generation: Microsoft wants everything to be connected (to Microsoft) & security & privacy simply isn't found on their list of priorities when making it so.

A company that would roll out Recall - the latest in a long, unbroken row of security blunders - to begin with cannot be fixed. MS will never, ever be a secure environment.

No, I'm not saying verifying checksum makes no sense, because indeed it can save some pain if fs is damaged somehow. However, calling this a "security" feature is a misnomer at best, and openly giving people false sense of security at worst.

There are many reasons why I'm against age verification and social media bans for teens.

Youth is part of society and their voices should be heard. When we take a look on how they use social media, we can see they use them for expressing themselves, mobilizing for important causes such as climate action and fair wages.

Imposing restrictions on young people is not the way to protect them. In fact, it's taking their right to freedom of expression and speech. It also harms society as young people very often have smart and accurate ideas on how to make society better.

Another reason is that to verify age, you need to collect ID. This exposes people to risks such as exploitation, identity theft, fraud, scams, etc. Breaches are happening, we saw many severe breaches in the past. Making the use of ID documents mandatory for age verification would make life easier for cybercriminals.

                          There are more reasons.

Yes, we need to act to protect children and fight against child abuse. There is no doubt about it. But what we need to do it in a reasonable, safe and transparent way that is not cutting young people from social media, or exposes people to risks to their privacy.

United States, established the "right to code" and dismantled the USA's unconstitutional ban on encryption exports, paving the way for people to develop technologies like PGP and other strong encryption tools without having to register as an "arms dealer" and face government restrictions on publishing their ideas.

In her career since she's represented many historic cases: suing AT&T for secretly collaborating with the NSA (Hepting v. AT&T), Sony for installing malware DRM, a vote machine company abusing copyright law to silence criticism, the DVD Copy Control Association attacking freedom of speech, and many other fights against the NSA and for internet freedom.

Cohn has been with @eff for over 30 years, and succeeded Shari Steele to become EFF's Executive Director in 2015. Our interview discusses her works and legacy, the origins of the EFF, and the still-ongoing fight for privacy and digital liberties 💪
