"ICE has been invading U.S. cities, targeting, surveilling, harassing, assaulting, detaining, and torturing people who are undocumented immigrants. They also have targeted people with work permits, asylum seekers, permanent residents (people holding “green cards”), naturalized citizens, and even citizens by birth. ICE has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on surveillance technology to spy on anyone—and potentially everyone—in the United States. It can be hard to imagine how to defend oneself against such an overwhelming force. But a few enterprising hackers have started projects to do counter surveillance against ICE, and hopefully protect their communities through clever use of technology.
Let’s start with Flock, the company behind a number of automated license plate reader (ALPR) and other camera technologies. You might be surprised at how many Flock cameras there are in your community. Many large and small municipalities around the country have signed deals with Flock for license plate readers to track the movement of all cars in their city. Even though these deals are signed by local police departments, oftentimes ICE also gains access.
Because of their ubiquity, people are interested in finding out where and how many Flock cameras are in their community. One project that can help with this is the OUI-SPY, a small piece of open source hardware. The OUI-SPY runs on a cheap Arduino compatible chip called an ESP-32."

Massive list of protest events this weekend, all of which appeared in the last day due to the shooting in Minneapolis. Lots locally in my area, too. I think people are angry and frustrated, and so far the 1st Amendment still applies here... So people are willing to show their anger and frustration.
Hackers are developing open-source tools like OUI-SPY and crowdsourced maps (deflock.me, alpr.watch) to detect and counter ICE's automated license plate readers and surveillance cameras. 🔍
These counter-surveillance efforts aim to protect communities from mass tracking, though legal risks remain. ⚖️

KPIX: Central Valley produce goes unharvested as immigration arrests keep workers away
Hey, it's that time of year for my seasonal poem A Christmas Peril. When I originally wrote this, in 2008, it seemed to many people that it expressed a distant possibility, but was a cute fairy tale.
Even then, also in 2008, I had done some back of the envelope calculations that suggested to me the possibility that human civilization could be wiped out, perhaps even humanity could go extinct, as early as 2035. But I didn't expect any one would believe it.
Now, less than twenty years later, I feel almost embarrassed circulating it because I hope most people can easily see how it pales against the stark and aggressive reality that the Climate Crisis is.
As for 2035? Well, I hope we have at least that long, but I'm a little worried we don't. Acceleration is a weird thing. Civilization may seem solid, but there are things that could happen (crop failures are the one I'm looking to) that could cause everything to unravel really quickly.
Maybe I should be updating my poem. But, for now, this is what I have to offer. Please read it if you haven't, and share it with family and friends as part of your holiday season. Mastodon boosts count as part of that, if you're of a mind to. :)
Happy holidays, everyone. The Climate Crisis isn't a very happy thought, but it underscores the importance of savoring civilization, stability, family, and friends while you can. I'd like to be wrong. But I wouldn't bet money on it.

ICE Letter re: Fort Bliss
ACLU: "We write to raise concerns regarding reports of significant abuse against detained immigrants held at the Camp East Montana immigration detention facility at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas (“Ft. Bliss"). These reports, based on interviews with over 45 detained immigrants held at the facility ,reveal alarming conditions of confinement and repeated instances of coercion, physical force, and threats against immigrants facing third-country deportations, in violation of agency policies and standards, as well as statutory and constitutional protections. But an internal ICE memo obtained by 11Alive Investigates shows that directive was rescinded in April of this year.
The memo preserves certain protections for active-duty service members, but leaves others vulnerable. In fact, the new directive explicitly states, "an honorable discharge does not prevent an alien from being subject to immigration enforcement."

"Elaine Miles was walking to a bus stop in Redmond to go to Target, she said, when four men wearing masks and vests with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement label stepped out of two black SUVs with no front plates and pressed her for her ID.
Miles, an Indigenous actor best known for her roles in “Northern Exposure,” “Smoke Signals,” “Wyvern” and “The Last of Us,” handed them her tribal ID from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon.....
Federal government agencies recognize tribal ID as a valid form of identification, and Miles has used it to travel back and forth to Canada and Mexico without any issues.
Yet, Miles recalled one agent calling it “fake.”

WPRI: RI judge intervenes after ICE wrongfully detains Superior Court intern
"Multiple sources told Target 12 that Rhode Island sheriffs earlier noticed someone taking photos of the intern inside the courthouse and in Superior Court Judge McBurney’s courtroom. When approached, the individual identified himself as an ICE agent and was told to abide by standard courthouse rules, and to stop taking pictures.
The intern was reportedly shaken, so McBurney offered to drive him home. ICE agents then surrounded the judge’s car and demanded everyone to exit the vehicle, threatening to smash in the windows if they did not comply.
Dana Smith, Head of Security Operations for R.I. Superior Court, confronted the agents and told both the judge and the intern to stay inside the car. After an argument, ICE confirmed they had misidentified the teen and left. The intern was released once his ID was checked.
“This egregious incident underscores both the community’s and the Judiciary’s concerns about how ICE is conducting its operations in Rhode Island,” R.I. Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul A. Suttell said. "
