soc.octade.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.

This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.

@damon Granted, this blog post is four years old. It predates not only the rise of Bluesky, but also even Musk's Twitter takeover announcement, much less the actual takeover.

But once again, there's this "Mastodon and the Fediverse", and once again with the same old meaning. "Mastodon" as in Mastodon the software and "Fediverse" as in the Mastodon network.

Another post that claims, no, insists that the Fediverse is literally Twitter with 500 characters because it only consists of Mastodon. Mastodon 3.x, actually, which hardly had any features that Twitter didn't have. But take a look at Hubzilla, which is where this comment comes from, even though most people will see it on Mastodon. Daily-drive Hubzilla for a year or two. And then tell me with a straight face that Hubzilla is a Twitter clone and all the same as Twitter.

And once again, I guess that literally nobody who is on Mastodon now sees anything wrong with this notion, and I only expect the usual small handful of non-Mastodon users to complain about it.

                        how do we make it financially viable to host a PeerTube instance, given the costs associated w/ growth? how do we ensure independence while thwarting bad actors?

                                      I occasionally have what I assume are automated accounts follow me. e.g. created recently, follow thousands of accounts, less than 10 posts, little or no profile info.

                                      Can anyone enlighten me as to the use case for these accounts? If all you want to do is monitor a bunch of posts wouldn't it be easier to just participate in the instance feeds directly?

                                                  in case anyone is curious about the underlying cause of it being impossible to migrate a mastodon server from one domain to another, this limitation is due to the activitypub protocol itself, which (simplifying for brevity) uses the equivalent of absolute/hardcoded URLs for posts

                                                  this fediverse enhancement proposal allows for relative domain names. given that it was written a year ago, and with the molasses-like development the protocol has, i sadly suspect it's unlikely to be integrated any time soon.

                                                      What I want is for the to grow. I strongly feel that centralized, commercial social media platforms are a dire threat to the long-term survival of human civilization, and they need to be replaced. And right now, the Fediverse seems like the best alternative.

                                                      That doesn't mean we have to copy the nonsense of the commercial systems, but we do need to think how we can grow and expand beyond our core demographics (i.e. 40-something tech-savy white people from Europe and North America).

                                                        I'm working on a project - does anyone know of a way to query GoToSocial's API without an authorization token (mastodon-style)?

                                                        I'm trying to hit /api/v1/statuses/{id}/context - but it requires an application token, which in the context I'm using this I won't be able to provide (there's no client).

                                                        Thoughts?

                                                          I joined the back in the days (2018, with my own instance) because I wanted an alternative. A real alternative. With a fundamentally different approach. Decentralised. Even when it hurts. (federation and decentralisation is complicated!) And I think we are on the right track. What bothers me are the people that want the Fediverse to be 1:1 copycat of centralised services and as that isn't the case declare it to be a failed experiment. I'll stay here. It's better. Is all.

                                                            I'd much prefer to discuss how we can make decentralisation better instead of discussing how we can attract TikTok, Facebook, Twitter users. The , due to decentralisation, can raise the price of abuse. Centralised services make abuse cheap. I want to drive up the costs of surveillance and abuse. Simple. Because when abuse becomes expensive, authorities have to justify the costs of limiting our freedom. See
