soc.octade.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
boostedMastodon.bd is finally up and running.
It’s the first Bangladesh-focused Mastodon instance on the fediverse. I’ve been wanting to see something like this exist for a long time, so it feels good to finally put it online.
Even though the focus is Bangladesh, the instance is open to everyone, regardless of where you’re from.

#Mastodon instance admins can customize the appearance of their web interface using custom CSS. However, the vast majority of admins do nothing with this and leave it at default.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with leaving it at default but there’s also nothing that visually sets it apart from other instances.
This is why I’ve spent the last 2 years tweaking the appearance of Retro Gaiden. Hundreds of lines of custom CSS applied and now it looks unlike any other instance on the #Fediverse.

#Mastodon, working as designed.
Happy to see that berlin.social has gone above and beyond what is required by German law to suspend an anonymous and antisemitic Zionist account (@hydra4455@berlin.social) that was engaged in harassing people voicing their opposition to Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people on the fediverse.
This account is just one of many following the same tactic of replying to posts with Zionist memes before blocking the original poster (so they can’t reply, etc.) and then unblocking them later so they can continue their harassment. (Rinse, repeat.) They will, no doubt, create new accounts on different servers. Please be vigilant and report + block on sight.

Another pro-genocide Zionist reply-then-block bot to report:

#MastoBlaster has its own #Fediverse account - powered by #snac
Follow @mastoblaster to receive all the updates, insights, etc.
In case you want to report this Zionist hasbara account that posted this reply and blocked me, please feel free to.
(This is their new tactic. The anonymous cowards.)
PS. Be careful, they’re on a German instance, they might block you instead if the admins are pro-genocide also (it’s a very common thing in Germany).

I won't be able to use the flag EXPERIMENTAL_FEATURES=profile_redesign for a while. I do not have time to redesign ours. I really think the Mastodon core team has made some poor choices lately, UX anti-patterns are popping up again. Last time, they changed post visibility under a modal that required up to six clicks and added unnecessary cognitive strain. I even sent a PR suggestion, but they rejected it.
Right now we have "Posts" and "Posts and replies" in tabs, but in the experimental profile redesign there's a "Posts" toggle that contains "Replies" and "Posts" toggles underneath it. It adds extra clicks and combines interface elements under one toggle, which just creates more friction. What's wrong with traditional tabs?
I wish they'd stop breaking what already works well. Honestly, as a long-time front-end developer, I don't understand some of these design choices. Hopefully, these experimental features will mature a bit before they make it to stable.
Issues opened:
https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/issues/183
https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/issues/182
Will hold off for now.
What I mean specifically are these endless toggles everywhere. Click-click-click-click. Before it was just a click.
Also, why change the most used hashtags into a horizontal list? And what's with that huge button to show more pinned items? What was wrong with the old setup? The carousel wasn't great either, but I liked the version that showed them one below the other.
What problems are we actually trying to solve here?
I know these aren't shipped yet, but does anyone actually use Figma and discuss UX?
I feel like my Mastodon fork will eventually go completely off-branch since I've been cherry-picking features anyway after 4.5. Some of the core ones just don't make sense to me.
Mastodon, am I doing this wrong? I searched for “books,” and it told me only 200 people posted about it in the last two days. When I open the topic, there are 9 posts, most of which are not about books at all. Is it possible that on all of Mastodon only 200 people mentioned books and there are only 9 posts? Am I missing something, or is the search just broken?
Excited to share our community vision for @Mastodon today: we are for the people.
This year our focus is on ensuring everyone can have a safe and fun experience on #MastodonSocial and #MastodonOnline, and doing more to support and celebrate the diverse servers running #Mastodon, its forks, and every #Fediverse application out there.

When you see antisemitic bots like this that spam replies to posts criticising Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people, make sure you report and block them.
(They block you after commenting so you can’t act on their post. Unless, that is, you run your own instance like I do and can suspend them.)
But wait, did I just call them antisemitic?
Why yes, conflating Zionism with being Jewish is to state that all Jews support Israel, settler colonialism, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. Of course not all Jews are Zionist and support such inhumanity. And not all Zionists are Jews.
The only ones painting targets on Jewish backs are Zionists.

EDIT: Build 68 should also run on iOS 18.x but it currently crashes. I'll see if I can fix it.
After quite some time, I’m finally ready to share this.
MastoBlaster is now available in public testing on TestFlight.
It is a lightweight, privacy-first Fediverse client for iOS, built around a simple idea: fast, small, predictable behavior, and first-class support for snac.
What makes it different:
• snac-first by design, not "compatible by accident"
• Works with all Mastodon API compatible software, including Mastodon, snac, GoToSocial, Akkoma, and others
• EXIF stripping on upload (HDR and orientation preserved)
• Optional on-device alt text generation via Apple Intelligence for your uploads and for images in your timeline
• Markdown posting for snac
• Granular notifications, grouping, multi-account
• Blocking and moderation tools
• Very small footprint, very low RAM usage
Alt text generation happens entirely on device via Apple APIs on supported hardware. Nothing is sent to external services.
It is built around my own workflow and priorities. It may not be for everyone, and that is perfectly fine.
Important note:
MastoBlaster will always be free for BSD Cafe users, illumos Cafe users, and for anyone connecting to a snac instance, including self-hosted ones.
The app is already usable, but this is still a test phase. I am looking for feedback, bug reports, and real-world usage insights.

Stay tuned.

We're absolutely thrilled to see the new Qlub app sitting pretty in app stores now 😍
We worked with the team at @qlub to build an app for the amazing community in Quebec and their specific needs.
It's so exciting to see it go live and we can't wait to meet the Qlub team next week 👀

#bluesky feels very #cryptocurrency
which makes sense since it's run by #crypto bros and funded by #cryptobros
the way they work is they make exciting starry eyed promises
people buy into the promises
and forget the reality
this is by design:
a true believer is immune to reality
the reality is, it's #centralized shit endlessly promising what #mastodon already offers
#decentralization is always just around the corner, just you wait!
and wait, and wait, and wait...
Also, thanks to: byte, dandelions, oxzi, davidrv00, ag-eitilt, pmjv, zen, daltux and anyone else I may have missed for contributing to this release!
I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' snac to 2.90 here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/31230
1 of 3 GitHub Continuous Integration checks completed successfully.
Fingers crossed the other two go off without a hitch. If so, it's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.

If you're using a keyboard and accessing Mastodon through your server's website, you can type emoji without having to use the picker.
Just type a colon : and without any spaces start typing a keyword. It will then present you with five emoji that match the keyword, and you can choose the one you want with the arrow keys.
For example if you type :sun you will see five different emoji for "sun".
If the one you want isn't suggested, click on the 🙂 picker icon instead.
One of the frustrating aspects of the #Fediverse remains the web-based cross-instance interaction. If I follow a link to a post anywhere on the Fediverse, and I want to interact with it in any way, the “flow” is still too cumbersome, especially when I want to interact with multiple different posts from the same instance.
The effort that has gone into #Mastodon to improve the UX from this side *has* improved the situation since 2022 (when I joined), but even on Mastodon it's still suboptimal.
Ideally, #Fediverse platforms should be able to interoperate at a deeper level. I should be able to browse a #Lemmy #PeerTube or #PixelFed instance with my #Mastodon account, or vice versa.
My understanding is that (some of) the platforms ideated by Mike Macgirvin (#HubZilla and #streams in particular, not sure about #Friendica) have this kind of integration (as well as other nifty features such as nomadic identities). Can we expand support for this to all Fedi platforms, I wonder?
