Ok, so they did and didn't break buildenv. If you use a normal make, it'll pick up the CC env variable that will make it build for your platform.

In the past, toolchain built a whole new cc which you would use. (And there are now optimizations that if the system compiler matches what would be built, use that instead of building again.)

Going to add a comment that CC and CXX are set and need to be used if compiling manually.

So a simple $CC -o out in.c works from buildenv.

Ahh, it looks like someone broke buildenv. I'm in a TARGET=amd64 buildenv and cc doesn't support generating amd64 binaries.

The whole point of buildenv was the ability to be in a world where you are as if you were on the target arch such that you can build binaries for that target arch.

This explains the issues I was having earlier with it.

So the EN that I worked on recently has now been published. A little disappointed that they didn't use the workaround I sent them of compiling out the 32-bit compatibility layer.

Also they dropped the fact that not all aarch64 chips implement the 32-bit compatibility instructions and are therefore not impacted. Of currently available chips, Apple's M1-4 processors and Cavium's ThunderX line are not impacted. Only systems that have the EL0 32 processor feature are.

Guess I won't write advisories in the future if none of it will get used.

I found this screenshot again and I still think it's brilliant. The best OS overview I've ever read.

Screenshot of a Reddit comment saying this:
Time for my OS opinion that's guaranteed to be unpopular with someone...
Sun Solaris used to be the OS that required overpriced proprietary hardware and still couldn't compete with Linux. That OS is now MacOS.
MacOS used to be the colorful and friendly walled garden OS that your non-techie parents would enjoy but was completely useless to you as a power user. That OS is now Windows.
Windows used to be the OS that could run a lot of apps, but was a headache to setup and maintain correctly and would sometimes blow up for no reason. That OS is now Linux.
Linux used to be the techie and developer oriented command-line OS that was lacking in desktop apps and might not support your hardware, but once you got it going, was rock solid and had no limits. That OS is now FreeBSD.

            Case matters, folks. 🫠

A meme showing a common Linux command line error. Top text says:

"my folder: Downloads"
"me: cd downloads"
"Linux:"

Below is an image of Loki from Marvel’s Thor movies saying, “I’ve never met this man in my life,” implying Linux doesn’t recognize the folder due to incorrect capitalization.

Finally, after some tweaking of github.com/dillo-browser/dillo I'm able to view the sites in the DIllo, not the blank page :drgn_happy_blep:

Looks like, the gemini.filter.dpi file contains some lines, which works well with GNU sed/awk but breaks with the same BSD utils:

              1) according to man 7 re_format, the "\s" can't be used to specify the space character class. Instead of it the "[:space:]" should be used.

              2) The forward slash inside the awk's group should be escaped.

It is interesting that both escaped and non-escaped versions works the same way with the GNU awk :drgn_think:

              3) Added two options for ansi2html to avoid unwanted second header's content drawn on the page. And to have properly formatted and clickable links in the browser.

              @dillo

The Dillo browser with loaded Nytpu's gemlog (gemini://nytpu.com).

All contents on the main page, even the ASCII graphics, looks good, without any rendering problems.

Diff beetween gemini.filter.dpi from official repository and my, modified for FreeBSD, gemini.filter.dpi. I fixed some Linuxism/GNUism to make this filter works in the FreeBSD (at least).

                Why BSDs in 2025?

My perspective and why we moved many services from Linux to the BSDs.

My Debian #Peertube instance was migrated to #FreeBSD before the holidays. And it went well since then.

Here’s what I did. Maybe you can too ;-)
