The Importance Of Monitoring Loading And Ballasting In Port

This is a colour photo of the stern of a large container ship listing to starboard (right) while loading and unloading in port. Long Beach, California (2015).
The lower twenty-five percent of the frame is filled with medium blue calm water with a few ripples from the afternoon sea breeze disturbing the surface. Running along the right margin of the image is the low, about two metres, side of the dock. The camera is about thirty metres aft of a large container ship moored to the dock. Four stout and taut mooring lines are stretching from the stern to the shore with many more out of view. Reaching upwards on along the right side of the photo are the tall, red, vertical legs of the gantry cranes that load and unload the many shipping containers from the ship. Two horizontal red and white striped booms can be seen reaching over the ship, with cables lowered down to load or unload a container. The ship's stern is flat and painted light grey, with the ships name 'OOCL SHENZHEN' and Hong Kong: the port of registry in bold blue letters. Above are ten rectangular openings about three metres above the waterline, it's from here that the mooring lines are fed out. A few metres above are three rows of thirteen further larger rectangular openings through which many of the stowed containers can be seen. The interesting and unusual aspect of this photo is that the ship has a noticeable list (its leaning) to starboard.

LA Times: COVID wave washes over California. Some officials urge residents to mask up

"A COVID wave is washing over California, with the state seeing continued increases in the number of newly confirmed cases and hospitalizations as some officials urged the public to take greater precautions.

The extent of the recent increases has prompted some county-level health officials to recommend that residents once again consider wearing masks in indoor public settings, at least until transmission has declined. "

                Good news:

"Oregon, Washington, California form health care alliance to protect vaccine access"

                opb.org/article/2025/09/03/vac

“The CDC has become a political tool that increasingly peddles ideology instead of science, ideology that will lead to severe health consequences. California, Oregon, and Washington will not allow the people of our states to be put at risk," the governors said in a joint prepared statement

“Vaccines are among the most powerful tools in modern medicine; they have indisputably saved millions of lives,” Dr. Sejal Hathi, head of the Oregon Health Authority, said in the announcement. “But when guidance about their use becomes inconsistent or politicized, it undermines public trust at precisely the moment we need it most.”

Last week, the FDA approved the new round of COVID-19 vaccines, but limited their availability to only those who are considered high-risk.
