    Ministry of Mirror Lake

Here stands a trio of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis), captured just days ago at the edge of still water. That same day, I shared a ghostly image—an ethereal glimpse of a passing flock, these very birds in motion. This photo stirs a quiet excitement in me: a new species now joins my growing archive, each image a small ceremony of recognition and inclusion.

These particular birds look as if they’ve just stepped out of a feathered spotlight—poised like a singing trio ready to belt out doo-wop harmony at any moment. Their stance, their symmetry, their pink-legged charisma—it’s all there, waiting for the downbeat.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story

"Three Black-bellied Whistling Ducks stand in quiet formation at the lip of a still body of water, their bodies angled slightly leftward as if mid-conversation or poised for a gentle procession. Each duck wears a striking ensemble: a deep chestnut body, black belly, and a crisp white wing patch that catches the morning light. Their bills blaze red like ceremonial seals, and their legs—long and pink—seem dipped in rosewater.

The water beneath them is glasslike, mirroring their forms with uncanny clarity. Reflections ripple only slightly, as if the pond itself is holding its breath. Around them, green vegetation frames the scene—lush, unruly, and alive. The lighting is soft but deliberate, casting a warm glow that accentuates the texture of their feathers and the quiet dignity of their stance.

Together, they evoke a sense of ritual: not just ducks at rest, but sentinels of a sovereign moment—perhaps convening a council at the Ministry of Mirror Lake" - Microsoft Copilot

            Alert

One morning, not so long ago, I was blogging in my office when I glanced out the window and spotted a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus)—a fawn—grazing quietly in the yard. I grabbed my camera and began taking pictures, documenting the moment from behind the glass. Before long, the mother stepped into view, and I continued photographing the pair through the window.

Curiosity nudged me outside. I made my way to the northwest corner of the fence and climbed onto the concrete bench stationed there, hoping to peer over without disturbing the scene. I fancied myself stealthy, but momma deer saw through the ruse instantly. Still, I managed to capture several good shots.

This image—taken at the exact moment I rose above the fence—is my favorite. A threshold crossed, a gaze met, a dispatch sealed.

"A deer gazes directly into the camera, its face filling the frame with quiet intensity. The image captures the head and upper neck in sharp detail, revealing the fine texture of its fur—soft, tawny, and subtly mottled. Its large ears stand alert, angled outward like ceremonial antennae tuned to the frequencies of the field. The eyes are wide, dark, and luminous, holding a gaze that feels both curious and ancient, as if the deer is mid-conversation with the viewer.

Behind it, the grassy field blurs into a soft wash of green and gold, creating a gentle contrast that draws all attention to the deer’s face. The lighting is natural and even, casting no harsh shadows—just a quiet glow that highlights the contours of its muzzle and the delicate curve of its jaw. The photograph feels intimate, reverent, and still, as if the deer has paused in its ritual to acknowledge the presence of the witness.

In the bottom right corner, the image bears the signature “Swede’s Photographs,” a quiet watermark of authorship and care." - Copilot

Black skimmers begin nesting on our beaches in the spring and we get to watch them grow from little baby puff balls to adolescents to adults over the summer. This bowl, with its rounded bottom so that it can rock and spin on a flat surface, almost functions as a diorama. It honestly feels more like a toy than anything else. My husband spun it around in the water so that I could shoot some video which I’ll post later. This piece belongs to the Gulf.

Closeup of a ceramic bowl floating in the Gulf of Mexico. The rim of the bowl is lined with birds heads shaped like waves and the interior has been glazed aqua to match the water. From the outside, one sees a series of black and white skimmer heads with orange & black beaks, but from the inside, the heads look like waves. Below the heads on the exterior is a carved wave design glazed aqua to match the water.

My husband’s arms hovering gracefully above the bird wave bowl after he’s given it a spin. From this angle, the aqua interior is more visible, matching the color of the Gulf waters. The circular rhythm of the birds heads create a wave pattern. The bowl seems to be nested in the waters below, which swirls gently around it as it spins.
