Here’s a quick showdown if you’re thinking of leaving proprietary Android behind:
Murena / e‑OS (Fairphone 4):
Price: €449‑€499
CPU: Snapdragon 750G (≈ 1.9 k Geekbench multi) – decent but slower
GPU: Adreno 619 (≈ 1.1 TFLOPS)
RAM/Storage: 6 / 8 GB RAM, UFS 2.1
Security: Standard verified boot, no dedicated security chip
Updates: Depends on LineageOS – often lagging behind Google’s patches
Pros: Modular, repair‑friendly, microG gives partial Play‑Services compatibility
Graphene OS on Pixal 7: (You could use any Pixal phone from the 4 up to the pixal 10 fold and Tablet)
Price: $599 (~€560)
CPU: Google Tensor G2 (≈ 3.4 k Geekbench multi) – ~2× faster than Murena
GPU: Mali‑G710 MP7 (good for everyday gaming)
RAM/Storage: 8 GB RAM, UFS 3.1
Security: Titan M2 security co‑processor + hardware‑backed keystore, verified boot, attestation
Updates: Monthly security patches, 5 years guaranteed
Pros: Strongest hardware‑rooted security on a consumer phone, pure Android stack (no Google services when using Graphene OS)
Why switch?
Better hardware trust – Titan M2 beats standard boot‑loaders.
Faster updates – stay protected without waiting for LineageOS.
Higher performance – smoother multitasking & AI tasks.
True de‑Googling – Graphene OS runs a clean, auditable Android fork.
💭 If you value privacy and solid performance, the Pixel 7 + Graphene OS is the more compelling upgrade, even at a modest price premium.

Okay for those of you who are into getting your hands dirty with testing some of the upcoming stuff Fedi-wise you might want to give #holos a try. It's pretty different (you are running a small ActivityPub server locally on an #Android phone) and it's neat. It's early so don't expect it to fully work. For myself, I'll probably be doing proper bug reports after #FOSDEM

The new #Android UI doesn't let me turn off mobile data without using aeroplane mode (which also, I assume, turns off receiving phone calls and texts).
What are they? In bed with network providers or something?
Great opensource app available on Google play store but not available on f-droid. What a waste of effort. That's why normal peoples hesitate to join opensource ecosystem, because tons of good apps still not available on f-droid. #android #fossandroid #itsfoss #fdroid #privacy #foss #toolbox #community

Looks like i read wikis for over an hour per week, and that's just on one (of 2) of their apps (& not to mention browser search results: )
A common use case is hearing someone famous' (fuzzily familiar) name then looking it up. Also used 2 research medical terms 4my Family.

Hey so Claude Code got DecTalk working in Termux on Android and got Emacspeak working with it. Very little lag. Emacs. Android. Org-mode. Bluetooth keyboard. Nov.el. Markdown-mode. Org-export. Calendar. Emacs. Mind blown.
What does Google hope to gain by cutting back on open-source Android releases? Given that so few phones don't use Google's version, it seems pointless from a revenue perspective. So they wanted to make enthusiasts mad and create bad press?

@jasonkoebler Piling on with everyone's regular reminder that there are de-Googled #Android alternatives for your phone to break out of the panopticon if you can give up the convenience of historically unethical companies like Uber and use apps from #FDroid that won't surveil you.
@GrapheneOS for example you can just plug your #Pixel into their website and transition easily. Not sure what's good recently for Samsung users. #Apple people, you're on your own. #Resist
@Oregon_Pacifist For anyone who's interested, I highly recommend Blockinger on Android. Hasn't been updated in eons because it doesn't need to be: it's a flawless open source Tetris clone with a similar feel to the old Game Boy style Tetris.
I can't tell you how many times I'd whip out my phone and play it if there was down time (not sure if that's a good thing). Sure beats doomscrolling, though!
Can anyone recommend a good email app for Android?
I'm currently using Edison Mail, which works very well as long as I'm connected to wifi, but won't work at all over a 4G phone signal.
Would quite like to have an app that works over a phone signal as well.
