I'm excited to give my first conference talk of the year this week at UC Open Source Summit in Berkeley!

For this brief talk I'll bring my love of activism together with disdain for surveillance capitalism, the surveillance state, and Big Tech, as well as my experience in secure open source communications — namely, Matrix and Signal.

Looking forward to seeing folks there!

Raise your hand if you use Chrome. After all, it is the most popular browser in the world and it’s not even close. And the very humans relying on it are more than users — they’re the product. PC World tells us more about how you can limit the amount of your data Chrome tracks — and reclaim a little bit of your privacy.

We talked about how predictive AI will make a 'meritocracy' impossible, how lifelike chat bots are designed to deceive you, and the importance of privacy in the digital age. Catch the episode on our YouTube channel or your favorite podcast app now!

Carissa Véliz is an associate professor at the Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford, a renowned author and speaker, a board member of the Proton Foundation, and a member of UNESCO's Women 4 Ethical AI.

Her new book Prophecy comes out April 21st and is now available for pre-order.

Prophecy is about how extensive use of predictive analytics is undermining our abilities to defy the odds, making systems unaccountable, and increasing risk in business and society while creating a false sense of security.

A landmark U.S. verdict framing social media as a harmful “product” could reshape regulation, but the response may miss the mark.

Instead of directly holding tech companies accountable for their platforms, proposals like age verification risk expanding surveillance, centralizing power in Big Tech, and sidelining open, community-run alternatives.

                  Quick question:

                  I'm not familiar w/ groupme.

I've been asked to join a group chat (legitimate) & install the app. 😞

I see it's owned by MS. Other privacy issues?

Wondering how hard to push back; it is for the cast/crew of a show -- and tech week begins today.

It would only be for a few weeks. I am trying to pick my "battles" here.

(🧡 One day I hope to not be the lone voice of dissent / reason w/ non-tech groups.)

Age verification will not work. Parents routinely give their own devices to their children to keep them busy.

So when mandatory age checks kick in, parents will verify their laptop, TV and phone, before handing them back to their children.

And then what? We're back to the same problem, except with an extra layer of surveillance on top.

What kool-aid are they drinking in the EU?

Someone logs a security issue for the age verification app because the app doesn't check all of the other apps installed on your phone to come from the Play store.

Reviewing the repo, the authors repeat the refrain that it's a white label, reference app, and that member states drive the final product.
