soc.octade.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
@lmemsm the closest I know is @landley 's writeups to his minimalist #Linux "distro" (or rather reference implementation of #toybox + #musl / Linux known as #mkroot.
toybox on it's own is basically a clean, minimalist #Userland inspired by #BusyBox but licensed under #0BSD.
mkroot then just is that, Linux Kernel and the necessary "wiring" to make it go brr in #QEMU.
He also releases his toolchain and has (by his own account) basically bootstrapped from there not just to #LinuxFromScratch but also 50% #BeyondLinuxFromScratch to evidence that it can be extended to arbitrary complexity.
Make the contents of a folder into an ISO and if that is successful, proceed to burn it to a blank CD. #Linux #05

@lmemsm basically the Idea behind it is to be a brutally simple #toybox + #musl / #linux distro that grew out of the necessity for me to actually think about #firmware for some projects.
Basically I want something that is so simple and auditable that it's practical to make it pass any #verification demands for #SecureTerminal|s in #CriticalInfrastructure and #Communications.
Not to mention a #GNUfree - #Linux distro is the way to go if I want that thing to not get bricked constantly by minor #GlibC-changes...
I hope that answers your question...
Me: I wanna rip what you're streaming like I did when I was a girl with a tape recorder and a radio.
Radio Station: Fuck you, no #streamripper because that's piracy pure and simple.
Me: Oh, silly me, I didn't mean rip, I meant I just want to listen on WinAmp.
@WinFuture statt solcher Hack ist's einfacher und flinker konsequent auf #Linux umzusteigen!
@wyatt I still have 3 gripes with what #Microsoft calls #WSL:
1. It's not a "#Windows Subsystem for #Linux", but a "Linux Subsystem for Windows". The real #WindowsSubsystemForLinux is called #Wine, as it provides #Win32 & #Win64 calls on Linux!
2. The "#Unix Subsystem for Windows" aka. "Unix Services for Windows" were to a degree better.
3. "WSL" is less of a compatibility layer and more of a #HyperV - #VM, which also results in issues with #VMware / #VMwareWorkstation and #VirtualBox.
@wyatt Personally I'd consider just doing some sort of "#FTP on demand" thing or just have a cheap storage VPS on hand for that (or some #Linux Server on the Network that once-a-day pulls the latest installer file and just redistributes it locally.
@thomasfuchs and now you know why I want a brutally simple #Linux distro like @OS1337 !
@elfin @tantacrul exactly!
Either offer a simple field like #Nautilus in #Gnome (i.e. #UbuntuLTS #Linux) to just enter protocol://user@remote.server.example:/path/to/files/ or the classic "Remote Drive Connection Wizard" on Windows that asked all the parameter and stored them easily, including any "Mountpoints" like Z:/ …

@cryptgoat personally, I do hope for #Valve to make that push, since there's no reason to assume #Microsoft #Windows will be of relevance soon and #Apple #macOS is just doing thibgs different for no valid reason than that they can (see #Metal vs. #Vulkan)...
@fuzzyface "Okay, I see a reasonable amount of understanding when I talk about #Linux to non or semi tech literate folks."
And they don't choose it, so your impression may be accurate in some sense.

You forgot the real elephant in the room: Android. With version 16 it will have a standard desktop UI built-in.
Android especially doesn't want to be known as a Linux distro, and that's a reason why its so successful.
there is one thing I really really dislike about this laptop, though: the stupid fucking copilot key.
it can't possibly be rebound to anything else because it doesn't act like a regular key. it seem to press and also instantly release left meta, left shift, and "f23" all at the same time.
how the hell could something like that possibly function for anything else? it can't be held down to be used like a modifier key since it releases everything instantly, no matter how long it's held down. hell, KDE can't even handle binding it to anything because it can't seem to pick up the F23
just another example of Microsoft actively and aggressively making the entire world worse. and HP has some blame there too.
Asking again. #Linux folks and #Nextcloud folks and #RaspberryPi folks - any good tutorials or help for someone with some tech experience who wants to set up their own cloud at home?
Please boost for reach? Thanks.
