I installed Syncthing on a Ubuntu 24 VPS to sync files with others over internet. I'll use the encrypted at-rest functionality.

after reading up how to secure the VPS, I added ufw rules to drop all incoming traffic except SSH and syncthing, disabled root SSH access, created a dedicated user for syncthing, switched on unattended upgrades.

what other measures should I take to harden #linux and #syncthing ?

@lmemsm the closest I know is @landley 's writeups to his minimalist "distro" (or rather reference implementation of + / Linux known as .

    • toybox on it's own is basically a clean, minimalist inspired by but licensed under .

    • mkroot then just is that, Linux Kernel and the necessary "wiring" to make it go brr in .

He also releases his toolchain and has (by his own account) basically bootstrapped from there not just to but also 50% to evidence that it can be extended to arbitrary complexity.

    • And that's why I chose that as basis for @OS1337 ...

@lmemsm basically the Idea behind it is to be a brutally simple + / distro that grew out of the necessity for me to actually think about for some projects.

Basically I want something that is so simple and auditable that it's practical to make it pass any demands for |s in and .

        • OFC one may point at my other projects and say: "Why don't you just put on a ?" ignoring that the smallest image is >330MB in size and that seems kinda overkill for essentially my demands for a minimalist with very few programs in userspace.

Not to mention a - distro is the way to go if I want that thing to not get bricked constantly by minor -changes...

        • End goal is something akin to in it's brutal simplicity, but way more extendable.

I hope that answers your question...

        • Sorry for the delay.

                    1. It's not a " Subsystem for ", but a "Linux Subsystem for Windows". The real is called , as it provides & calls on Linux!

                    2. The " Subsystem for Windows" aka. "Unix Services for Windows" were to a degree better.

                    3. "WSL" is less of a compatibility layer and more of a - , which also results in issues with / and .

it can't possibly be rebound to anything else because it doesn't act like a regular key. it seem to press and also instantly release left meta, left shift, and "f23" all at the same time.

how the hell could something like that possibly function for anything else? it can't be held down to be used like a modifier key since it releases everything instantly, no matter how long it's held down. hell, KDE can't even handle binding it to anything because it can't seem to pick up the F23

just another example of Microsoft actively and aggressively making the entire world worse. and HP has some blame there too.
