@adisonverlice Generally, "" and the "" functionalities of modern like on do allow for deploying any set of keys, including organization-own ones for custom images.

But yes, any decently sized IT department just puts the factory-new machines on a "Deployment-LAN" where they get PXE-booted into a deployment system, have their OS image keys added via said remote console and then get their custom OS image enrolled.

@kb6nu "Better" is going to be a really, really subjective question.

There are essentially 2 browsers on #Linux - Chrome/Chromium, and Firefox.

Chrome and Chromium are of course the Google-driven browser derivatives; if you're going to use that, I'd recommend looking for 'Chromium' or 'De-Google'd Chromium' in the repositories of whichever distribution you landed on.

Firefox is the Mozilla foundation web browser, and comes by default on most distributions since it is less privacy-bad than Chrome.

Both Chrome and Firefox will have a similar user experience to using the same browser on Windows, so if you previously used one, you should feel right at home. If you used a Google or Mozilla account to sync bookmarks/plugins/etc, it should be essentially seamless.

There are also approximately 29348572398457 derivatives of Firefox, with varying levels of quality. Brave, LibreWolf, and Zen are the current top 3; I use Zen because I like the user experience. At it's core, it's still Firefox, but the wrapper is less distracting for me.

There's no downside to downloading 5 or 6, trying them, and seeing which front end you like better.

Very basic Linux question [SENSITIVE CONTENT]

I'm almost too afraid to ask this because saying "Linux" on Mastodon is like saying "breakfast" to Jenkins 🐇. He gets reeeaaalll excited.

Anyway. I know nothing about this kind of thing, and I would like to know more!

Can I do the following things on Linux:
              - download, create and edit docx documents (yes, specifically docx, despite being a Word thing)?
              - use Steam and play the many games in my Steam library?

Or is a partition the way to go?

Those 2 things are really all I use my machine for. The docx thing is not something I have control over and is a mandatory assignment format if I wish to pass my degree over the next 4 years. The Steam library thing is because The Sims just isn't going to play itself, is it?

I think one important thing for new users, is to consider 'distro hopping' a bit. you should try different things to see what fits you, your workflows, and other needs you might not even realize you have.

don't run the first thing you got recommended for 5 years and then conclude all of linux sucks. I *will* make fun of you if you do that v:

the difference between distros can be as big as between linux and e.g windows/mac. Android and ChromeOS are linux distros, to name some examples.

Small heads up for new users:
While Mint is often recommended for Windows converts, be cautious if you're into . Getting headsets like the Valve Index to work can be a real challenge on it.

A friend just switched to Fedora to solve this exact issue. Distros with more up-to-date software often provide a smoother experience for modern gaming hardware. Mint isn't necessarily bad, but for e.g VR/etc, it pays to research your use cases with your distro before install

What I'm looking for is basically a way to mirror the audio output of the computer at my desk over the network to other computers in my apartment. They should play whatever _it_ plays, regardless of whether it's web radio, Netflix, or game audio.

And the secondary players should be decent speakers with integrated computers and Wi-Fi, akin to a Sonos speaker.

They're gonna run the installer and fuck up their HDD a few times, losing everything. If they're lucky (maybe 25% will make it thru?), they'll eventually boot to one of the two worst desktops in all of tech, GNOME or KDE.

So they have no files. No programs they recognize except Chrome. "Where's OneDrive?", oh, you can't use that here, try hosting your own server & rsync. "Where's Word?", try LibreOffice. 🤣
