Is it just me, or is the r/Rakulang subreddit significantly less popular than it used to be? Has the community migrated away from Reddit?

If true, you'll get no complaint from me. Reddit is basically Usenet but centralized and with a heavy dose of surveillance capitalism. The more communities that find a home elsewhere, the better.

I captured this image of these Mountain Bongos at the Dubbo Western Plains Zoo in the mid west of NSW, Australia. An amazing zoo to visit if you are in NSW, Australia. I chose to post this image due to its endangered species. The Mountain Bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci) is a critically endangered, large forest antelope native only to Kenya's highland forests. With fewer than 100 individuals estimated in the wild, they are among Africa's rarest mammals, characterized by a vibrant reddish-brown coat with white stripes, large ears, and spiral horns.

I think I just had THE fediverse moment:
Scrolling through my timeline watching text posts, photos, a peertube video...A short video.

"ah nice MTB video" , I thought. Until I saw the handle: someone@loops. Wait.. I see a loops here. This isn't just a video. This is a video on A DIFFERENT Service. And I can seamlessly interact with it.

A new service just integrated seamlessly into my timeline. No "connect your account", no "extra app", no "extra login", no, it's just there

This is #fediverse

One of the posts I saw in my timeline recently about the whole thing was pointing out that whatever is going to be proposed as a Discord alternative should focus on the UX, not on the kind of features that us nerds love, such as federation (or even security).

I'll add to that this kind of seamless joining UX *is* something whose absence will reduce community participation.

And while we're at it, I'll repeat something I've already mentioned: we need something like for the #Fediverse too.

One of the frustrating aspects of the #Fediverse remains the web-based cross-instance interaction. If I follow a link to a post anywhere on the Fediverse, and I want to interact with it in any way, the “flow” is still too cumbersome, especially when I want to interact with multiple different posts from the same instance.

The effort that has gone into #Mastodon to improve the UX from this side *has* improved the situation since 2022 (when I joined), but even on Mastodon it's still suboptimal.

Ideally, #Fediverse platforms should be able to interoperate at a deeper level. I should be able to browse a #Lemmy #PeerTube or #PixelFed instance with my #Mastodon account, or vice versa.

My understanding is that (some of) the platforms ideated by Mike Macgirvin (#HubZilla and #streams in particular, not sure about #Friendica) have this kind of integration (as well as other nifty features such as nomadic identities). Can we expand support for this to all Fedi platforms, I wonder?

I can say the #Fediverse is a different place than any other social media platform I have been on. I've been here since 2022. When my self-hosted instance went down for a couple days, I didn't yearn for social media like a drug. I wondered how certain people's cats were, one person had a mother in the hospital, someone was getting a new job, one had the blues, etc, etc. I missed people more than viralness of a platform. #Mastodon #ActivityPub Thank you for being my Old Friends.

I created this mandala from my photograph of the Sydney Harbour Bridge I captured and created the mandala / kaleidoscope with special software from my image. I was amazed to see how the Harbour Bridge looked so different in the mandala with magnificent detail. A complex mandala featuring detailed geometric patterns set against a natural blue sky background. The center showcases vivid reds, oranges and black adding to the depth and intrigue. As this image is saved in PNG format, you are able to change the background color on any of the products shown to suit what you would like.

Amplifying some drama I was just in to broadcast a point

My point:

1. If someone doesn't use alt text, we help them, we cheerfully engage them

In some instances they are an asshole who still won't use alt text

If not, we won a convert

2. Meanwhile, nastiness certainly won't convince the asshole

*And nastiness will drive away those who would have responded positively if only we were nice about it*

My hope is that the community on the #Fediverse will actually last, instead of being destroyed by yet another corporate "disruptor".

Not only does adding alt-text to your media help people with disabilities help to enjoy media it also grows the #Fediverse

When people search for media on search engines the chances are higher they end up on something on the Fedi with alt text added

So indirect adding alt text also spreads our network even more!

So.. ADD ALT TEXT♥️ A brief or extended description of the media posted, super simple and you help a lot of people!
