Cities aren't just installing parking apps. They are signing contracts that outsource surveillance to the private sector.
When you pay for street parking, you aren't just paying the city. You're paying a data broker.
The ecosystem looks like this:
Vendor collects GPS, plate, payment.
Broker aggregates it with shopping/browsing data.
Insurer/Campaign/Police buys access.

Dear politicians,
your push for surveillance is wrong! Not just morally, but also from a strategic perspective. In a geopolitical environment shaped by digital warfare, the data you collect on citizens will become a threat. Adversaries will try to weaponize those data, and sooner or later, they will succeed.
A transparent society is vulnerable to all sorts of malicious influence.
Privacy supports resilience! Data you don't have cannot be used by or against anyone!

EFF is alarmed by recent laws in several states that have blocked public access to data collected by ALPRs, including, in some cases, information derived from ALPR data. We do not support pending bills in Arizona and Connecticut that would block the public oversight capabilities that ALPR information offers.

Nothing restores confidence in a surveillance bill quite like the government telling everyone to shut up about it.
