A first of its kind Linux CVE dropped and in kernel code rewritten in Rust. The Rust rewrite introduced a race condition in a multi-threaded doubly linked list implementation leading to memory corruption.
This is the first formal CVE located in the Linux Rust code, a bit of an auspicious milestone.
Well, #genshinimpact seems to be broken on #Linux today. This doesn't seem to be the usual "wine/proton is misconfigured and fails to launch" thing because it loaded fine and was playing fine until it just drops with Error 10010-4001.
Just grinding to triple-crown Alhaitham because his VA is at a local con next month, but this IS my vacation where I happened to already be spending a fair amount of time in #wherewindsmeet, so maybe not the best time to be telling me to go play something else.
Got it! 🖖 😎

Action Retro Demonstrates PS2 Linux
It's a weird bit of console gaming lore than Sony was so proud of the PS2's Cell processor that they actually officially ported Linux to it. All you had to do was buy the "Linux Kit," which contained two DVDs, a module that added monitor-capable video out and Ethernet ports, and a "gigantic" 40GB hard drive.
As it turns out,

It is almost 2026 and there's still software that breaks with paths with spaces...
Windows might have many issues, but the idea of using the "Program Files" folder to force developers to fix their broken shit was very good.
Although I prefer #Linux for many things, I do bump into a problem that makes it feel like MS DOS ca. 1987 sometimes.
Reboot, & my USB (both tty & audio) devices may re-shuffle.
Everything was working. #DireWolf #RigBlaster #WSJTX #WinKeyer #FTdx3000
Without changing any USB cables in any way, reboot, & Direwolf cannot start because the TTY port isn't there anymore.
Now starting documenting a new habit. Unplug all USB but one if I'm going to reboot, then plug in specific order. This is dumb.
Good.
AI slop (AI generated code) will be not allowed in GNOME shell extensions: "At this point, we have to add a new rule to the EGO review guidelines. So the packages with unnecessary code that indicate they are AI-generated will be rejected."

I just read an https://lwn.net article about how the Linux 6.19 kernel is about to be released and how there were over 12,000 commits and, god damn, open source is cool and the people who are committed to it are heroes. #linux #oss

Pro tip for retro gamers switching to Linux...
If you use Retro-Bit controllers, you'll likely run into incompatibilities. Luckily, there's a community-made driver package that fixes the issue.
I've listed the Github below, which includes installation instructions for most distros. If you're on Arch (or a distro based on it), there's also a relevant package in the AUR that works perfectly ("hid-retrobit-dkms").
Vojtux - Accessible Linux distro which is almost pure Fedora
Vojtěch Polášek has put together a technical preview of a version of Fedora that should work well for blind or visually impaired users. While his goal is explicitly to see these improvements and changes become part of Fedora itself, for now you can use this implementation based on the Fedora MATE spin. :)
I just ran into an issue with Debian 13 vs 12 in my zfs backup script: suddenly, it wanted me to enter my sudo password again
The reason? In Debian 13 they've started to enforce 'UsrMerge', and while there's a symlink for zfs in /usr/bin, the actual binary lives in /usr/sbin.
So if you run into weirdness with sudo rules after doing major version upgrades (also goes for other distros), check if the binary you're trying to whitelist isn't actually a symlink.
🎄 Advent of Donations - Day 9 🎄
Today I'm going back to my terminal to find a project to sponsor. I'm sponsoring bat, the cat clone with syntax highlighting and git support. I've aliased it to cat for years now and therefore am using it every single day.
Learn more about Advent and Donations and bat in my latest blog update: https://britter.dev/blog/2025/12/01/advent-of-donations/#day-9---bat
Did you know you can still get the src for the DICE C compiler (68000 #ANSI C #compiler) written for the #Amiga in the early 90's by Matthew Dillon?
Itll run on #BSD or #Linux host and can generate generic 68000 output that doesn't have to be targeted to the Amiga. It contains all utilities required to compile, assemble, link, rom, etc, and it's BSD licensed. dmake is needed to compile it on #Unix. It will generate 68K code, Amiga bin, obj, etc

The BSDs are *awesome* operating systems. #FreeBSD is a high performance general purpose OS. It is modern #Unix. #NetBSD is for portability, it supports nearly every CPU architecture under the sun. #OpenBSD is security-focused. #GhostBSD is a FreeBSD fork focused on the desktop.
Most of my experience is with FreeBSD, which I will enthusiastically share. It is unquestionably a solid server OS. As a desktop OS, it works quite well. It definitely does not feel like "Linux from 2004." The major desktop environments like #KDE #GNOME #XFCE are all supported and #nvidia releases drivers for the OS too. Modern hardware is supported. For *cutting edge hardware*, #Linux may be the better bet here. It's a little slower to adopt cutting edge gear because it is focused on stability and elegant solutions, not trend-chasing.
FreeBSD is an excellent OS to learn. It runs beautifully and it's more coherent and better designed. Documentation is *solid*.
Edit: Corrected errors. GhostBSD, not DragonflyBSD. Thanks @aru
If there is one thing about the #Linux community that drives people away more than anything else, it's the condescending answers people often get from Linux users when they ask questions or where they make requests for Linux software to work a certain way they find helpful on other platforms.
It's so common in Linux culture, to get answers that arrogantly disdainful and are intentionally completely unhelpful and unrelated to the question being asked. That needs to change.
