A first of its kind Linux CVE dropped and in kernel code rewritten in Rust. The Rust rewrite introduced a race condition in a multi-threaded doubly linked list implementation leading to memory corruption.

This is the first formal CVE located in the Linux Rust code, a bit of an auspicious milestone.

Well, seems to be broken on today. This doesn't seem to be the usual "wine/proton is misconfigured and fails to launch" thing because it loaded fine and was playing fine until it just drops with Error 10010-4001.

Just grinding to triple-crown Alhaitham because his VA is at a local con next month, but this IS my vacation where I happened to already be spending a fair amount of time in , so maybe not the best time to be telling me to go play something else.

        Action Retro Demonstrates PS2 Linux
It's a weird bit of console gaming lore than Sony was so proud of the PS2's Cell processor that they actually officially ported Linux to it. All you had to do was buy the "Linux Kit," which contained two DVDs, a module that added monitor-capable video out and Ethernet ports, and a "gigantic" 40GB hard drive.

        As it turns out,

Although I prefer for many things, I do bump into a problem that makes it feel like MS DOS ca. 1987 sometimes.

Reboot, & my USB (both tty & audio) devices may re-shuffle.

                        Everything was working.

Without changing any USB cables in any way, reboot, & Direwolf cannot start because the TTY port isn't there anymore.

Now starting documenting a new habit. Unplug all USB but one if I'm going to reboot, then plug in specific order. This is dumb.

Pro tip for retro gamers switching to Linux...

If you use Retro-Bit controllers, you'll likely run into incompatibilities. Luckily, there's a community-made driver package that fixes the issue.

I've listed the Github below, which includes installation instructions for most distros. If you're on Arch (or a distro based on it), there's also a relevant package in the AUR that works perfectly ("hid-retrobit-dkms").

I just ran into an issue with Debian 13 vs 12 in my zfs backup script: suddenly, it wanted me to enter my sudo password again

The reason? In Debian 13 they've started to enforce 'UsrMerge', and while there's a symlink for zfs in /usr/bin, the actual binary lives in /usr/sbin.

So if you run into weirdness with sudo rules after doing major version upgrades (also goes for other distros), check if the binary you're trying to whitelist isn't actually a symlink.

Most of my experience is with FreeBSD, which I will enthusiastically share. It is unquestionably a solid server OS. As a desktop OS, it works quite well. It definitely does not feel like "Linux from 2004." The major desktop environments like are all supported and releases drivers for the OS too. Modern hardware is supported. For *cutting edge hardware*, may be the better bet here. It's a little slower to adopt cutting edge gear because it is focused on stability and elegant solutions, not trend-chasing.

FreeBSD is an excellent OS to learn. It runs beautifully and it's more coherent and better designed. Documentation is *solid*.
