The debate over academic freedom seems to be patterned by two logics (that can be in tension):

Freedom from interference;

the need for social accountability.

Where there are high levels of trust of universities & academics it may be relatively easy to resolve disputes prompted by these two concerns, but where trust is lacking then difficulties will arise (much like society more generally).
