So many things are going on (including this #Mastodon instance) that it's impossible to keep track of them.

I've seen some great success stories with #MutualAid and have been warmed by the generosity and support that define #Mastodon and the larger #Fediverse. Question about #Hubzilla:

Does Hubzilla also have a multi-column layout like the “advanced” UI of #Mastodon?

I’m thinking of migrating because of text formatting and for the ability to create much longer posts.

But I’m also a little afraid because I’m old and my cognition seems to flutter increasingly.

#Mastodon isn't difficult because of what you have to learn, it's difficult because of what you have to unlearn.

It's amazing to see #Mastodon and the #Fediverse recommended more but in turn Bluesky is also named as a "good alternative"

I would like to argue it's not;

If the company behind Bsky decides to stop and shut down their services, your self-hosted PDS can't do anything anymore without all infrastructure needed

Ofc one could self-host this but this is a true nightmare and far from a good solution

So yeah, I feel moving to Bluesky is just moving the problem, it's not a solution

Kuddo's to @EUCommission for having but more importantly USING their #Mastodon instance actively

Not only posting but also engaging with people, love that!

Meanwhile the #US mostly uses "TruthSocial" that is build on wrecked Mastodon code to profit the President and him alone

This is a win for #Europe!

Again looking at running my own #Mastodon instance and seeing a ton of abandoned projects for lightweight, single-user #ActivityPub servers. Are there options that are actively maintained and ready for use? I've run #Pleroma before but don't actually need a web frontend. Happy to @phanpy and that's it. Suggestions, anyone?

Has Retro Gaiden achieved visual perfection?!

This #Mastodon server is the result of 2 years of visual tweaks and improvements. There is nothing that looks like it on the #Fediverse!

In the near future I'll be setting things into motion to bring more retro enthusiasts here and make RG their fedi-home

With posts going around about the Mastodon HOA, I disagree with some of the points made by some.

Should you join the Mastodon HOA and annoyingly "correct" everyone who doesn't do things the way you want them to do them?

Hell, no!

Will people do things in ways other than how you want them to?

Yes.

Is this a moral failing on their part?

No.

Does this, by itself, constitute an attack on you, or an injury to you?

No.

But what are you supposed to do about it?

Nothing. That's the hardest part for members of the HOA to accept. You don't need to do anything when you see someone do things their own way. Ignore it. Move on with your life. See also: bean soup syndrome.

To clarify and defend against some attacks the HOA has directed against me in the past:

I think alt-text on images is a good thing.
I think people should use alt-text on images they post.
I put good, descriptive alt-text on pretty much every image I post, not just "Photo of <X>".
Do I yell at people who post images without alt-text? No.
Do I boost posts containing images without alt-text? Yes, if they're worth boosting.
Do I yell at people for boosting posts without alt-text? No, of course not. See above.

If you're in the HOA, you're part of the problem. Just stop.

What a day I've had.  I built a new linux server, then a #Mastodon server on top, and recovered a backup.  Thankfully all went to plan.

I've been running a theme specific Mastodon server for three and a half years.  On Wednesday morning the server failed and since then #IONOS (my server provider) have shown absolutely zero urgency in trying to resolve the hardware issue.

I could not wait any longer, nor disappoint my faithful users. This morning I spun up a new server elsewhere and started the slog to recovery.  Mastodon is a fickle beast!

Anyway, so far all is good and we're back in business.  I have put some beers in the fridge for later!

I changed the navigation pane again on Retro Gaiden on mobile. I think we’ll roll with this for a while

The Retro Gaiden web interface has a ton of custom CSS applied to it, which makes it look unlike any other #Mastodon server on the #Fediverse!

It's something we take a great deal of pride in at this instance, especially when 99% of other Mastodon servers look identical.

I was hoping the recent #news regarding #meta in the #court cases would maybe bring a few new #friends to #Mastodon, and I have openly advocated for the #fediverse and even shared #links and #articles that I have found here. Does anyone have any further #advice about discussing #decentralized #socialmedia with people? I think most are reluctant to abandon the convenience that Meta and #X provide. I know a couple of #women who have tried #Substack but they seem intimidated by the Fediverse. It's not that scary once you cross the threshold! I keep recommending hear-me.social as a good place to start!

There are tons of #Mastodon clients out there. You can also simply use the web site for your instance. You are in full control of your #Fediverse experience and can customize just about everything to your liking. That’s another reason why open source, decentralized social media will *always* be better than big/ centralized social media.

The Retro Gaiden website received another round of visual tweaks this morning. It’s just about as good as it gets. I’ve very proud of it! It’s unlike any other Mastodon instance on the internet

(Although remember that nothing is private on Mastodon. Your private mentions/direct messages are not end-to-end encrypted so your instance admins – and anyone hosting a hammer to their knees – could be reading them all. If you want to talk privately, use Signal or Delta Chat. Never share sensitive information on “private” messages on Mastodon. That goes double for our friends in Gaza.)
