The #Fediverse population skews old - I think the median age is in the mid-40s.

So how can we, as older people who have presumably seen some shit, support younger people who are anxious about their personal future and the future of the world at large for entirely understandable reasons?

I mean, I definitely hit some rather low points in my life. But I now have a stable career, gotten out a debt hole, and even own an apartment where I have only 10 years left to pay off the mortgage.

In contrast, young people who need to enter the workforce to pay their bills are constantly told that AI will make their beginners' skills worthless, and there is a high chance that we will soon enter a new Great Depression once the #AIBubble bursts.

Oh, and fascists are taking over more and more countries while the global environment is collapsing more and more.

In other words, young people need all the help they can get. So how can we support them?

Definitely. It's a very consumery mindset. I don't need #fedi to replace RSS. I'm here to talk to interesting folks.

The conventional wisdom of posting on and searching several hashtags that interest you and finding friends that way is still the best advice, IMO.

And, self-own, I guess, but I've already muted 2-3 of the most prolific political Mastodon accounts, because they never interact with anybody, and only post frustrating-but-necessary-and-true takes on the horrible conditions of the day.

I ain't here for that.

And I'm not here for folks who view the #fediverse as a place to promulgate their ideas, and not interact, learn, and grow.

That's why I'm here, and this place has been a huge part of my life for the past four years. 💗

The blindness community is also quite interconnected. If we wanted to, a "web of trust" would be more possible for us than other communities. We regularly gather at conventions (NFB, ACB, Sight Village, Zero Project, etc.) so with accessible, easy to use and understand tools, keysigning parties could easily happen. We've already moved to the #Fediverse because it's more accessible, and obviously better for our needs. Let's keep thinking differently about centralization and privacy; we might discover there are other methods that will work better for us and our needs, without restricting our rights, privacy, or functionality.

Außerdem: Um interessante Friendica-Konten zu finden, braucht man selbst nicht auf Friendica zu sein. Ebenso bei Pixelfed usw.

Das beste, was du nur mit einem Mastodon-Konto machen kannst, um Leute zu finden, denen du folgen könntest, ist, Mastodons Suche zu verwenden. Einfach mal interessante Hashtags eingeben und gucken, was da so auftaucht.

Es scheint ja unendlich viele Mastodon-Nutzer zu geben, die selbst nach Jahren diesen Trick noch nicht kennen. Die folgen einfach jedem, der ihnen über den Weg läuft, in der Hoffnung, daß in ihrer Timeline irgendwas Interessantes hängenbleibt. Nur, je mehr Leuten sie folgen, ohne irgendwas irgendwie zu kuratieren, desto weniger von ihrer Timeline lesen sie letztlich, und desto mehr eigentlich interessante Inhalte bleiben ungelesen, weil sie nie zu diesen Inhalten hinscrollen werden. Gut, das war auf Twitter auch nicht anders.

Ich habe Friendica schon lange nicht mehr benutzt. Aber soweit ich weiß, ist es als Facebook-Alternative beim Auffinden interessanter möglicher Kontakte sehr viel leistungsfähiger, vor allem sein Verzeichnis.

Mastodon hat auch ein Verzeichnis auf jedem Server, das listet aber nur die lokalen Konten auf dem jeweiligen Server. Friendica müßte immer noch alles listen, was es kennt, also nicht nur lokal auf dem eigenen Node, sondern überall auf Friendica, überall im Fediverse und möglicherweise je nach eigenen Verbindungsmöglichkeiten sogar darüber hinaus, z. B. auf diaspora*.

Noch in einem anderen Punkt ist Friendica meines Wissens sehr nah am alten Facebook: Es gleicht dein Konto mit dem ab, was es kennt. Und dann sortiert es diejenigen Kandidaten im Verzeichnis nach oben, die a) die meisten Übereinstimmungen im Profil haben (geht natürlich um so besser, wenn die Kandidaten ein ähnlich gegliedertes Profil wie auf Friendica haben) und/oder b) die meisten Kontakte mit dir gemeinsam haben.

Wie gesagt, Mastodon bietet nichts dergleichen. Da wird man schon selbst auf Suche gehen müssen. Aber wenigstens hat man diese Möglichkeit, die leider vielen überhaupt nicht bekannt zu sein scheint.
