State of California just launched a site to have an easy way to request that data brokers delete your info with a single request. (Deletions won't start until summer [data brokers are still registering with the state for compliance].)

I tend to trust State of California with this stuff under its current administration. If privacy experts have caveats, I'd love to hear in the replies.

We went down for breakfast at Deetjen's in this morning. It's been stormy here so there weren't too many tourists about.

But we did end up helping out a rental car (an Audi S4 from Enterprise) with a guy from Palo Alto and his mom and brother visiting from Mumbai. They ran over a small rock on the road that had come off the side of the mountain (lots of rockfall during storms in Big Sur) and it punctured the sidewall of their low profile tires.

They didn't know where the jack was in the car. I got there a bit after another guy was helping them with the jack from his car that ended up damaging some sheet metal on the rental car. We finally figured out where the rental car Jack was (under a separate compartment from the spare tire) so we could get the wheel off the ground correctly.

We got the tire changed and got them on their way back to Monterey where there's cell service and an Enterprise office that's open on Saturdays. The donut spare wouldn't make it back to the Bay Area on its own.

Hopefully they got the comprehensive coverage with their rental because that'll be a $5-10k charge for the sheet metal damage, four new tires, and whatever other BS fees Enterprise will charge.

At McWay falls, some tourists asked us about the road closure. They had a flight to catch at LAX this evening and were wondering if the road was actually closed. Yes it is and the detour is to go back up to Monterey, over to Salinas, and then onto highway 101 all the way to Los Angeles. I have a feeling they probably weren't going to make that flight.

There's never a dull moment in Big Sur.

I had huevos rancheros at Deetjen's which is always an excellent choice there.

Some tourist at Deetjen's was badgering the staff for the wifi. There is very much no Wi-Fi there.

Hmmm. I have done a lot of winter camping (and in snow, subzero conditions), and I'm going to say "reading an article about winter camping" is not sufficient to prepare you for actual winter camping.

I'd put this in the category of "go with people who have winter camped before" and/or "take a class on winter camping", at least in the case of snow and/or (worse) cold weather with possibility of rain. I have done this a LOT and avoiding hypothermia and dangerous conditions is substantially harder in winter vs. other seasons.

Since then, has been prohibited in state waters, which extend 3 miles from the shoreline. There has been limited drilling, & no new leasing, in federal waters off CA since the mid-1980s.

The plan would also require new & leasing in the eastern …. That could prompt pushback from from , who have opposed new drilling there ever since the 2010 Deepwater Horizon rig disaster devastated the state’s tourism industry.

The Dept could announce the proposal as soon as this week, acc/to the 3 people….

There has been almost no development along the coast since an enormous spill near Santa Barbara in 1969 that shocked the nation & helped to galvanize a national movement. The sullied beaches in the popular coastal enclave, killed thousands of birds, damaged property & harmed the commercial fishing industry.

to propose opening Coast to for the first time in roughly 4 decades, acc/to 3 people.

The move would set up a confrontation with Gov , a who has fought & who has emerged as one of Trump’s chief political antagonists. Newsom is in Brazil for the summit, where he is drawing a contrast between himself & Trump, who denigrates efforts to fight .
