Link at bottom. In my quest to get others to visit my website to see what I am up to instead of wondering why I am not posting or interacting on Facebook, I got this reply, which just made me sad.

    > Hey bro! Is this your website thing? But I only visit links I know, and I've never seen Sightless Scribbles before. I don't understand why you can't just post on Facebook where I don't have to click on links I don't know. can you make it easier on me and just post your blogs to your Facebook or get a Substack? If you blogged somewhere I know, I’d read it.

I think this fear of links is the worst thing to happen to the internet. Tech literacy is still an all time low, even in people younger than me. Tech literacy should be a mandatory requirement in all schools, and yes, I mean learn stuff like, what a link is. how to read a link. What HTTPS means. How email works under the hood. I don't mean code or programming.

    My website is sightlessscribbles.com/

Do any of you people know about any safety classes for that I could direct my mom to?

She keeps repeatedly making the same mistakes, clicking on websites that she shouldn't go to, and downloading things to her that end up sending her spammy notifications about how she needs virus protection, etc.

She clicks on those because she believes they are real and they flash up so quickly that she can't see that the URL is a fishy one. Then she puts her card number in -- and then she gets money stolen from her. Then she messages me and tells me that she messed up again and asks if I can come "fix" her computer.

The answer is no! I don't have time right now! I am sick today and I still have commitments I have to meet until 930 P.M. tonight. My sister and I can't figure out if this is just a plea for attention, if she's bored, or just what the hell she's doing.

So here she is, getting money stolen from her because she's bored and clicking on the wrong things -- probably on Facebook.

No amount of conversation or information from her children is sinking into her head. No amount of chiding, putting a post it note next to the computer, showing her what the URLs look like -- that they are clearly not official -- nothing works!

We've had this conversation a dozen times and she's still does the same thing. She's had hundreds if not thousands of dollars stolen from her because she must believe that computers are benign and that *she's* not doing anything wrong online (she's smart, so she thinks she's smart about computers -- but she isn't). We've had so many conversations about bad actors that I feel like a broken record.

I have resorted to taking her computer away from her in the past. I got her an iPad with an external keyboard, which seemed a little bit safer, but she "hated" it.

This last year, she bought herself a MacBook Neo, which runs on an iPhone chip, so I thought it would be a little bit less prone to mom fails, but somehow she's still downloading things that shouldn't be on there.

I wish there were parental controls on computers for seniors! 😩😩😩

I’ve started a substack and Stripe requires me to upload my government ID for verification. I am very weary of doing that despite knowing so many have. I’ve always opted for an alternative with American big tech. Is Stripe safe? Do I have a choice? Are there any tips anyone has?

Under Trump, the United States has made it clear that dependence on US tech can and will be weaponized.

In part, that's a new development — at least for some parts of the world. But ensuring the power of the US was sustained by getting other parts of the world to adopt its tech was always part of the plan.

For the 50-series GPUs, Nvidia removed the ability for consumers to read the GPU "Hotspot" temperature sensor.

That sensor has just been exposed by HWMonitor in its latest update.

My report: I have a PNY OC 5080 and the "GPU" temp at full load under No Man's Sky (no vsync, 144fps cap, full GPU utilization) sits around 60F and the Hotspots (Hotspot 2 is a little higher than the first) seem not to exceed 75F. There's 15F or so difference between "GPU" and hotspots, often.
