There's a new meat eating hype. Meat companies are telling everyone people would have more energy if they only ate more meat. Employers are getting huge meat lunches for their employees and expecting a productivity boost. Against their better judgement, employees are stuffing themselves with loads of meat and struggling to work. But eventually, they figure out how to eat more and be more productive. In the meantime, a lot of people (including meat eaters) are crying over the obvious climate and health harm, both from increased meat consumption and from increased waste as people throw away even more food.

Meat eaters now put up a big banners of what meat they like, and invite others to join them with meat. More people are becoming vocally vegan, or at least trying to limit their meat consumption. Some also put "vegan" or even more aggressive "no meat allowed" signs.

Some meat eaters think it's fine to bring offering of meat to a stranger if they didn't put up an explicit "vegan" sign yet. "I won't get offensed, I'll just throw it in the trash", they say. Some go even further and try to trick you by saying it's actually a vegan meat-lookalike.

My previous book, Technofascism Survival Guide, had a very successful Kickstarter campaign. I raised $ 12,928 Canadian out of my $2,700 Canadian goal. I finished writing that book recently, and all my backers got their eBooks and other campaign rewards fulfilled, as of July 1st.

Unfortunately, due to the immense damage Gen AI has done to my career, at the moment my Kickstarter funded books are pretty much my only source of income. I know a lot of people are hypocrites, so I must reiterate that I take pride in doing 100% of my own writing, and I do research the way research has always been done prior to 2020. It would disgust me to use Gen AI in any way whatsoever. The cover art for Recovering After Gen AI was also 100% human made, by my friend Cory Gerard.

My thesis is that Gen AI will end, soon. Soon, as in, probably not beyond 2027. It cannot keep going, because:

The financial bubble will pop.

The Gen AI datacentre boom is unsustainable according to the laws of physics. I cite Harvard Science Review, MIT, and a United Nations report in my Kickstarter campaign page to back that up.

Model collapse, a computer science phenomenon where Gen AI or machine learning data gets corrupted when feeding upon other Gen AI vomited data, is another reason why Gen AI is unsustainable in the long term. And my campaign has scientific citations for that, too.

So my book is about dealing with the aftermath of Gen AI. Because even though it cant keep going for much longer, it’s causing so much harm to peoples psyches, livelihoods, and the planet. And there will be a ton of damage that we’ll need to recover from.

In the near future, AI-powered surveillance systems will be able to track everything we do in public, and much of what we do in private. And if we do something wrong – shoplift, litter, jaywalk, you name it – the system will notice, retain it, tie it to your official government record, communicate that fact to you, and provide real-time alerts to any relevant authorities … and maybe also to the general public. Think of these systems as automated speed cameras, but on steroids. Only they’ll enforce not just speed limits, but any other rule you can imagine. Duan, a Chinese citizen blacklisted by the system after he lost his job and was unable to repay a series of loans. When he visited Beijing, the city’s AI surveillance system identified him by his face at a major intersection and displayed his face, name, and citizen ID number on a large electronic billboard nearby with a message that he was an untrustworthy person. Similar systems are now being deployed across China and integrated with its infamous online monitoring, censorship, and social credit systems. AI surveillance is now being experimented with in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. According to a new report, the US Department of Homeland Security is rapidly increasing its use of AI-based surveillance, including facial recognition and the monitoring of social media accounts, to keep tabs on immigrants, dissidents, journalists, legal observers and protesters. While the systems are ostensibly used to maintain security and public safety, the real aim is often social control. Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle – a powerful tech giant that works closely with the Trump administration – has said: “Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re constantly recording and reporting.” The chilling effects are the point.

But we believe the most urgent and long-term impact will be its broader chilling effects. In a new book, Chilling Effects: Repression, Conformity, and Power in the Digital Age, Jon Penney explains how surveillance, technology and power can be weaponized to influence behavior at scale. Surveillance, personalization, uncertainty and authority are all key mechanisms to increase the scale and impact of chilling effects. They cause people to self-censor their words and actions, to become more conformist and compliant and thus easier to manage and control. Computerization has long allowed data collectors to track our locations, collect lists of whom we communicate with, and monitor our spending habits – unless we use cash. What’s new is an unprecedented fusion of each of these mechanisms, persistent and unrelenting. Human translators manage good #translation because they comprehend the original text, know its intricacies and can actually creatively write to preserve its gist. Context is more than the surrounding paragraphs: it includes the cultural and social background, other books, etc. Sometimes it literally involves getting hints from the author. And in the end, it is deeply personal. It can't be "accurate", because no two people are the same, and no two languages map 1:1 (though the interpretation will also differ between different users of the same language); the best you can do is add translator's notes.

LLM translators manage good translation because they've been fed tons of human translation work, and quite often they manage to match an original human translation and plagiarize it. They may even seem better because they seem to manage it without sufficient context, but that's only because they've found a human translation that had that context already.

Or, well, technically they can also regurgitate something that makes sense only in the irrelevant original context.
