PixelRAG is an open-source visual RAG framework that helps local AI models understand documents by analyzing screenshots instead of relying only on extracted text.
It preserves tables, charts, diagrams, and page layouts for more accurate retrieval, and can run locally with your own PDFs and webpages.

Horrified/entertained to hear my daughter tell me that, on her recent flight, she watched the woman in the seat in front of her fill out a "pastoral pre-marital counseling" form by pasting answers from #ChatGPT.
"How should household tasks be divided in a marriage?"
[ChatGPT in another tab] How should household tasks be divided in a marriage? --> paste output
"What are three fears you have about marriage?"
[ChatGPT] What are three fears people have about marriage? --> paste output
etc.
After I got done terror-laughing I asked if this person looked about 18 years old.
"No, she was about 30."
We are fucked.
Learning to recognize artificial pseudo-photographs is a very interesting domain (if "interesting" is the word).
Again, repetition is the mother of learning, naturally.
Myself, I failed the sample tests (four and four images) in the article.
I partitioned them into two classes mostly correctly (real vs. artificial), but I swapped the classes.

Does anybody else feel like LLMs completely destroyed not only the job market, but the job hunting process itself? I apply to dozens of jobs and it's like I just don't exist. Nobody even notices me jumping in the back yelling, "Ooh, me! Pick me!" because of the throng of LLMs auto-applying and the other throng of LLMs doing the actual candidate selection. The game has changed. IDK how to play it anymore, and I'm literally going hungry as a result.
There's a new meat eating hype. Meat companies are telling everyone people would have more energy if they only ate more meat. Employers are getting huge meat lunches for their employees and expecting a productivity boost. Against their better judgement, employees are stuffing themselves with loads of meat and struggling to work. But eventually, they figure out how to eat more and be more productive. In the meantime, a lot of people (including meat eaters) are crying over the obvious climate and health harm, both from increased meat consumption and from increased waste as people throw away even more food.
Meat eaters now put up a big banners of what meat they like, and invite others to join them with meat. More people are becoming vocally vegan, or at least trying to limit their meat consumption. Some also put "vegan" or even more aggressive "no meat allowed" signs.
Some meat eaters think it's fine to bring offering of meat to a stranger if they didn't put up an explicit "vegan" sign yet. "I won't get offensed, I'll just throw it in the trash", they say. Some go even further and try to trick you by saying it's actually a vegan meat-lookalike.
Much of AI "productivity gains" come from managers implicitly trusting an LLM to do a good job, and suspending the onerous micromanagement that humans employees get subjected to.
You can do that without paying Anthropic a single penny. It just requires letting the experts you hired do their jobs.

This is a *really* interesting read about #GenAI and #LLM.
I don't agree with all points, but it's overall very well written, and not an *angry* piece at all, while it still raises everything that's ethically so wrong with the 'new business model'.
So, while Charity makes the point that it's not ethical to use 'AI' (as it is coined today), it's here to stay, and we need to work through how we're going to make it less harmful for us/the world.
Also, do make the effort to read the foot notes. These two stood out to me:
> 3 AI will absolutely be used by authoritarian governments everywhere — it already is. This genie is not going back in the bottle. I want every ethical person I know learning about AI, using AI, and thinking about how we are going to use AI to *fight back.*
and
> 4 I have to say how much whiplash it gives me, as a child of open source and copyleft, to find that copyright law and internet advertising are now… the good guys? this timeline is WEIRD you guys)
(yes, the brackets in the last quoted quote don't match up ...)

No, it isn't. The tech bro owners of the AI™ corporations are forcing themselves in. LLMs do not have agency.

I wouldn’t use ‘pattern recognition machines’ as a label for the current crop of ‘text regurgitating machines’ because your label also includes medical diagnostic tools that are providing specialists with great tools to aid diagnosis. Using #GenAI #GenAISlop #LLM based #GenAISlop #ChatBotsOnDrugs etc. , is more appropriate. There are AI differences to be recognised.
& now there's YA reason: last week, #GitHub urged the FOSS community to *oppose* important #California legislation that places transparency and consumer rights requirements on deployment of LLM-gen-AI!
GitHub's tactic? Disinformation claiming #FOSS licenses are incompatible with Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §22757 and California #SB1000 (which seeks to amend §22757).

Due to the thirst of #GenAI, #Google is now consuming as much power as Aotearoa New Zealand! That's what people get through the continued push for slop machines.

I dislike the #AI #llm term "jailbreak" for the same reason many folks dislike "hallucination." Like it or not, they are both "terms of art" in the space, so we must deal with them.
But it's helpful to know what they mean. Broadly, "hallucination" is a non factual response, and "jailbreak" is an undesirable (to the creator) behavior.
But what both miss capturing, is that both are the system operating as designed. Possibly not as intended, but as designed.
Next probable token. That's it.

The best way to learn to #write well is to read voraciously, and the best way to lean to #read well is to write incessantly. The most reliable way humanity preserves and expands its knowledge is through reading and writing.
Today, college kids are using #LLM to read and write for them. Their professors are using LLM to generate and grade assignments. The kids respond in kind by using LLM to do the assignments. #AI is the only party in this “efficient” exchange who is improving its reading and writing skills and is learning ever so deeply about the patterns of human behaviour.
