Drei weibliche Sperlinge mit weichem, flauschigem Gefieder sitzen zusammen auf einem schlanken Ast und halten ein Schwätzchen. Die beiden Vögel auf der linken Seite schauen nach rechts, der Haussperling ganz rechts schaut nach links zu den beiden anderen. Die zarten Federn der kleinen Singvögel sind in verschiedenen Brauntönen mit lockeren, sanften Pinselstrichen gemalt. Der Hintergrund ist abstrakt in warmen Braun-, Lila-, Erd- und Schokotönen gemalt.

    A Carolina Chickadee getting some lift off of a tree stump ~ beautiful photo! Chickadees are ultra small birds ~ even though they average a length of about 5 inches, they usually only weigh less than half an ounce! You can see that this fella has a jet black head and a triangle shape of white about halfway down its cheek and then returning to black to the bottom of its neck (that part is called a bib). Not visible in this photo are its back, wings and tail which are grey. Its eyes are dark brown, the beak is solid black and the legs are grey. Carolina Chickadees do mate for life.

      Just saw a Baltimore Oriole in our yard for the first time since 2010.

      The bird bath is relatively new. We haven't seen anyone get into it yet, but hopefully soon.

              Mythical Creature

              Is it a flying narwhal, a unicorn with wings, or a garden fairy? Nope — it’s a ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). I happened to catch this tiny marvel zipping past while I was set up to photograph much larger (and much slower) birds. These hummingbirds flap their wings about 53 times per second, and even with my shutter speed at 1/1000, the wings still refused to freeze.

              Despite that, I love the composition of this shot. On that day, it won out over several technically sharper images simply because the moment felt right.

                Ruby in the Air

                Here is a ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). I’m personally not thrilled with the image. I used Lightroom to blur the background, and it ended up looking like a clumsy kid trying to stay inside the lines of a coloring book. I could have started over, but I thought, nah — just go with it.

                                            Flauschiges Kohlmeisenbaby im Garten ist ein handgemaltes Acrylgemälde im quadratischen Format der Künstlerin Karen Kaspar. Ein kleiner Vogel, eine junge Kohlmeise, mit leuchtend gelbem und blau-grauem Gefieder sitzt auf einem Holzpfosten. Das Baby mit dem aufgeplusterten Gefieder wartet darauf, von seinen Eltern gefüttert zu werden. Der Hintergrund ist abstrahiert dargestellt und zeigt eine Mischung aus zarten Pastellfarben. Ich hatte dieses Frühjahr wieder das große Vergnügen, in meinem Garten zu beobachten, wie die fleißigen Meisen-Eltern die hungrigen Schnäbel ihres Nachwuchses mit Insekten und Raupen gefüllt haben. Der ganze Garten ist dann erfüllt von dem lauten Geschnatter der kleinen Vögel. Dies hat mich zu diesem Acrylgemälde inspiriert.
