AI is erasing the line between civilian & military life

The same systems that power translation, logistics, and digital assistants can just as easily be used for weapons or surveillance. When the Pentagon branded Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei "a liar with a god complex" it exposed just how blurred this boundary has become

Today's AI is not simply "dual use" - it's inherently violent in design and increasingly fuses daily life with geopolitics

Inspiring to see so many people pushing back against corporate AI data centres, unleashed in their communities without democratic debate.

The Liberal government is all in on the AI hype fuelled by tech giants and wealthy investors.

But people will not stand by: the Carney government can’t race ahead with this world-changing technology without the guardrails we need to protect our jobs, data privacy, land, water and resources.

Just last week, Hamilton put a pause on new AI data centres, giving local government time to enact strong safeguards and make sure some of the benefits flow to people, not just tech giants.

We must do the same nationally. There’s too much at stake.

We don’t want to be looking back and wishing we’d done more once the damage is already done.

For the exact same reason that I have less patience than I should for the copyright-infringement concerns around LLM training, the notion of a "distillation attack" is very funny to me.

Oh no! Someone trained an AI by having a conversation with your AI? How awful for you! Next thing I know, you'll tell me people steal "newscaster voice" by watching the news, or do impressions of their favorite celebrities!

How dare people build new things by asking lots of questions of your question answering machine you built to answer questions! That's just... Awful!

                    note 1

When Microsoft redesigned Recall with VBS enclaves, AES-256-GCM encryption, Windows Hello authentication, and a Protected Process Light host, the message was clear: the data is locked in a vault.

The vault is solid. The delivery truck is not.

AIXHost.exe, the process that renders the Recall timeline, has no PPL, no AppContainer, no code integrity enforcement. Any process running as the logged-in user can inject code into it and call the same COM APIs the legitimate UI uses. Once the user authenticates with Windows Hello, decrypted screenshots, OCR text, and metadata flow through AIXHost.exe as live COM objects. TotalRecall Reloaded sits inside that process and extracts everything

No admin required. Standard user. No kernel exploit. No crypto bypass. Just COM calls

The topic is "Good Enough Ancestor: Software Freedom as Civic Care across Generations". It will connect the software freedom movement to Audrey's and Caroline Green's framework for local, community-governed, more caring AI systems rather than reliance on centralised systems. Tang and Green work in the local University of Oxford Institute for AI Ethics. Tang is also first Digital Minister of Taiwan, and 2025 Right Livelihood laureate. Before ministership and research, Tang was a prolific FLOSS programmer, and since has for example helped persuade Pol.is to adopt the AGPL license.
