There’s a camera in my flight’s setback display. Thanks to the overt surveillance from companies like Google and Meta, my knee-jerk reaction was that the airline is recording all passengers. Thanks for the paranoia, Zuck.

Good News, although only temporary until they "can get those data, , security and sharing concerns ironed out through a contractual relationship":

»The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is reportedly ending its deal with Safety, a company that helps law enforcement track vehicles using thousands of its license plate placed across the United States. […]

“This contract is not being renewed because of serious concerns around civil liberties and civil rights issues, particularly around privacy and the data that is being collected from these cameras,” ’s chief information officer Dean Gialamas was quoted as saying. «

Cut the crap, Meta. You thought you'd get away with this, same as every privacy-invasive mechanism you've adopted for years (and got away with a lot of it.)

Give it a respite, and Meta will come back with another privacy-busting "feature" - until someone calls it. Meta has earned the right ten times over to be banned.

Concerns about Flock's mass-stalking system are often dismissed on the grounds that we have no expectation of privacy on public streets. This logic is treated as self-evident and eternal, yet 'privacy' is a concept that is constantly re-evaluated and updated. For instance, 18th century European (and British) post-offices regularly opened citizen's mail without warrants. After all, the mail was being carried by a government agency and so the government could put whatever conditions it wished on that service. The USA had to build it's own post office to establish an expectation of privacy for communications (see link below). Today, many jurisdictions have likewise established an expectation that private citizens will not be recorded in public as they go about their personal business.
