People think a lot about the output they get from AI tools and chatbots.
But they don't think enough about the input they give to AI tools and chatbots.
Your input is very likely collected, tagged, evaluated, shared, and reused. Every word, every image, every line of code, every data point you share with them, knowingly or unknowingly.
You're not using them.
They're using you.
The most fundamental concept to comprehend to understand privacy is consent.
The most important concept to comprehend to understand why most AI training data is unethical is consent.
Consent is one the least understood concept in our society, yet the most likely to save it.
If you have difficulty understanding why privacy is important and why nonconsensual data sets are problematic, start learning more about consent.
It will benefit all aspects of your life,
and society as a whole as well.

I'm just a former cybersecurity professor who quit her job because the Open Institute of Technology was going to force me to subject my students to Gen AI.
Kickstarter is my sole source of income for the time being, and I'm really struggling financially. I wrote books for O'Reilly and Wiley, and now I write self published books criticizing Big Tech.
I have an excellent track record with Kickstarter campaigns.
Gen AI will end. The laws of physics can't sustain datacentres. Financial bubble. Model collapse. I cite MIT, UN, and Harvard Science Review.
What will we do in the aftermath to recover from massive population psychological damage, environmental destruction, tech debt, abandoned datacentres?
Pledge as low as about $12 USD for an eBook.

If you don't trust AI and AI's accuracy, then why would you trust an AI "AI-detector" 🤨
Turns out, AI is horrible also at detecting AI. And this is once again an AI "solution" that creates much more damage than benefits. Please stop this nonsense.
"According to data compiled by Pew Research, 40% of US adults predict AI will have a negative impact on society writ large, compared to just 16% who say it’ll have a positive effect."
Read "The AI Industry Has Acted So Badly That It's Now Dealing With a Huge Wave of Hatred":

And this "entitled prospective user" attitude. "I was planning on moving my projects to #Codeberg, but now I won't". Oh, how sad that you won't give them the benefit of using their free services (okay, I'm sure you were going to donate).
Reminds me of the "entitled prospective contributor" attitude in #Gentoo. "You never heard from me before, but I don't like this new policy. There are dozens of new contributors with me, just around the corner, and now we won't be able to contribute." (This was about the copyright policy, so they could have contributed noncontroversially for a long time, yet they never did.)
I'm trying to keep an open mind.
When someone I used to respect starts using LLMs, I'm thinking: okay, their moral compass is bad, but at least they're putting an effort to review that stuff and they're trying to improve other projects.
When that person writes a pro-AI blog post, complaining that people aren't respecting them anymore, I'm still trying to stay neutral.
But honestly, when said person starts ranting that Codeberg dared ban vibecoded shit, I can't but despise them at this point.
Dystopian tech is not inevitable.
We can push back against dystopia.
And we can win.
Do not capitulate.
In the meantime, #GitPython, the package that used to be dead (because the author is busily working on their next great thing) is now slopping out 4 "security" releases a week, as their #slop machine is busily fixing unintended variable expansion in every single URL they call. Unfortunately, they probably don't have enough tokens to fix them all at once, so instead all downstreams have to deal with the churn of endless security releases. Or the brain to figure out that maybe they could just disable variable expansion by default and solve them all at once.
It's truly a great time to be a #Python packager.
Let's say you're building a house. Normally this involves hiring a whole bunch of experts (either directly or via some company). You need to pay a fair wage for their labor, and you have to pay for all the material they're going to use. Some of them will be more experienced than others. They will sometimes make a mistake. They will sometimes get sick. The whole construction work will probably take a few months, and may get delayed in the process. Some construction material will be wasted. There's also a risk that over the next years, you'll discover that they screwed something up, and have to fix it. But you'll get a reasonably good house.
Now, a kid comes and tells you you don't have to do this. Instead of paying all these people, you can hire him. He's wearing a suit and sunshades. He never laid a brick in his whole life. But he's got this new great technology that will give you a great house in no time. Of course it will cost you, but not as much as the labor of all these people. You try to learn more, and you discover that the technology actually builds and razes a hundred of house-like things a day, until it gets close enough to something that actually resembles a house. There's a lot of wasted energy and material, but you don't have to worry because it's all subsidized (for the time being). You pay less, you get a house that looks just right on the outside and inside, and that seems to work just right.
Of course, there's a real risk that in a few months you'll discover that something is wrong. You may have to pay a lot for a real expert to figure out how things were done, and how to fix them. Or they may not be able to help you. You may be stuck having to call the suit again, and he'll happily come and fix it for you. And by "fix", I mean he will just raze a whole part of the house and start randomly spitting it out again until he gets something that looks about right, and works about right. Of course, it may not really be a good fit for the rest of the house, but you don't want to pay for replacing the whole thing, do you? It may also introduce a completely new issues that will surface in a few months, but that's just how it is.
Welcome to the glorious world of #AI.
I am very tired of all the tech companies embracing dystopian surveillance, overhyped AI, authoritarianism and fascism.
Which tech company do you know that hasn't?

And if you wish to debate with each other, then please remove my handle from it (because this creates a lot of notifications in my phone 🫣), thanks! 🙏

RE: https://zeroes.ca/@kimcrawley/116957567981962022
What a total fucking disappointment.
I simply asked Matt Tutt to introduce himself and he talks about how he helps his SEO clients use ChatGPT! 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
As I said privately, this isn't like an employee being forced to use Gen AI at their survival income job.
Matt is a consultant and he could advise his clients to steer clear of Gen AI.
Environmental destruction with every "prompt."
Oh, your client is a food bank? Poor people who live near Gen AI datacentres are being tormented by noise pollution, sent electricity bills that are a decade of income for them, and polluting their air.
Meanwhile, in the developing world, poor people are forced to work psychologically torturous jobs to screen Gen AI for CSAM and other disturbing shit.
Traitor.
WTF is up with supposed "anti AI" people who want to tell me how they use Gen AI the very moment I offer them trust and our Stop Gen AI platform?!
RE: https://zeroes.ca/@kimcrawley/116958054984882249
For the record, if you're a consultant and your client asks how they can acquire more ChatGPT visibility, you tell them why they must avoid Gen AI. You don't fucking say "I will help you improve your ChatGPT visbility!"
As this author correctly writes:
"We have rejected all AI implementation work. It is absolutely a gigantic bubble and we have minimized our exposure to it – every single one of our current contracts would be totally unaffected by OpenAI collapsing, save for perhaps some second-order effects such a recession causing a client to become unable to pay us. And there’s nothing we can do to insulate ourselves from that anyway.
One of the most valuable rules I’ve heard, from Gerry Weinberg, is that consulting is influencing people at their request. Unless someone has indicated that they want us to stick my nose in, usually by explicitly saying they want guidance on general data strategy, we just let the projects fail in peace. You can barely recognize me, I’m so calm these days."

Employees forced to use Gen AI by their evil bosses for their survival income job get a pass from me.
But consultants are supposed to say NO when a client says "I wanna use the planet destroying torment nexus bot!"
Fucking traitor, Matt Tutt.

Let's get this straight: anything created with "AI" is #slop.
It doesn't have to be vibe-coded. It doesn't have to be horrible code. It doesn't matter that you've spent hours perfecting the prompt. It doesn't matter that ten people have spent a week reviewing it in detail.
As long as an "AI" took part in writing it, it's slop. It's an unethical technology, and anything created with it is tainted. It's an inhuman technology, and you're supporting it. You're being disrespectful to your users and contributors. You're putting your own convenience over humanity. You're aiding the worst murderous assholes in the history of humanity. And what's perhaps worst, you quite likely believe that you are making a net positive contribution, that you're helping people, while you're actually disrespecting and harming them.
#Signal troubleshooting - very odd support conversation
Yesterday afternoon I had a quick video call with someone using Signal and then I went to pick up my child from an afternoon summer program.
When I got home I realized that my phone wasn't receiving any new messages on Signal... but my computer was. Signal on my phone was completely frozen.
I followed a prompt and sent the most recent log to their support email. Then carried on with my life.
At some point, 2 hours later, I had a eureka moment: the last thing that worked was a call. Let's try the same thing.
So I called my mom and hung up (she was in the same room as me). After the call, all the Signal messages that had accumulated during the afternoon magically synched. Everything worked again! And then I found a new message by Signal saying "Welcome to the official Signal release chat!" Ok.
Glad I was distracted by my child and dinner because when I checked my email, I found a response from Signal support: "It appears the database is irrecoverably damaged. Unfortunately you will need to completely uninstall and then reinstall Signal. This will delete your message history. It cannot be recovered."
Say what? 😳
So I wrote back to Signal that I had fixed my issue by simply starting a call and then all the messages started synching again. I thanked them for their speedy reply and said everything was ok.
I did the bedtime routine for my child and before bed I checked my email again.
Two identical emails from Signal:
"Hello. We understand your frustration. We feel it too" HUH?
"There is no specific timeline for a resolution at this moment." WHAT RESOLUTION, I SAID I FIXED THE PROBLEM?
"Please keep in mind we are a small team and have limitations as a non-profit organization. Uninstalling and reinstalling is the only action available."
I feel for you Signal and I'm super grateful for all you do, but maybe your LLM support system needs some tweaking. Because this has got to be some LLM that misunderstood my reply.
Thank goodness I didn't wipe 6 years' worth of messages, gaaah.
Signal has been working perfectly ever since. Still, I'm now compiling a list of people I message on there as a contingency plan, should thing go awry again.
I've been using #DeltaChat more lately and more and really love it.
one more tale for #MySoCalledSudoLife
The state of #Python ecosystem right now: almost everything is slop. Some projects are complete vibe-coded slop (autobahn, chardet, cryptography). Some projects are disguised slop ("Coding agents shouldn't co-author themselves.")
There is only a handful of human projects left (Flask being one bright example). And they're being killed. They're being killed by the neverending slew of slop pull requests. They're being killed by all their dependencies becoming slop. They're being killed because this whole ecosystem has became such a complete cesspit that you have zero motivation to do anything.
EDIT: and honestly, this is only going to get worse. When you kill the incentive to work on projects, you only get more slop. Maintainers give in, and more projects become slop. Or they give up, and projects get forked unto slop.
"'AI is just a tool', yeah, well, so is meth. Several militaries distributed it to their front-line soldiers to enable them to fight for longer. It's also an FDA approved medication for treatment-resistant ADHD.
Yet if I gave all my employees unlimited free meth, created a leaderboard where whoever uses the most meth each month gets a bonus, then fired everyone who refused to engage in mandatory meth smoking, I think the investors might have some question."
The tool is stupid, and not for whatever the fuck you're doing with it."

The talking heads elevated by the media as the voice for "anti AI" are hypocrites and they don't care about helping ordinary people who are facing poverty thanks to Gen AI.
Ed Zitron yells "NO ONE IS LOSING THEIR JOBS!" several times per week.
Cory Doctorow actually chooses to use Gen AI. Seriously.
Instead, elevate people who are poor, struggling, and suffering for having moral principles.

You can offset carbon on a spreadsheet. Yet you can't offset thermodynamics in the real world.
Big tech is bragging about "water-efficient" AI data centers while intentionally omitting the power plant. Read this article.
In the US, generating the electricity to run these clusters uses roughly 12x more water than the data centers use on-site.
Buying "water credits" in Michigan does not change the physical reality that you are boiling off the local municipal water supply in a desert area to dissipate the thermal load of an LLM.
Kinda sus to call it an engineering breakthrough. Looks like thermodynamic gerrymandering to me.
