Over the past few days, a few crickets have made their way into the house.
Whenever I can, I guide them back outside so they don't land on us during the night.

This morning, I was mowing the lawn a bit - not much, just as much as needed, before the rain - and there were plenty of them in the garden.
A neighbour, as often happens, suggested I cut it shorter "to drive the crickets away". I looked around: all my neighbours' lawns are kept extremely short, and the surrounding countryside is completely plowed.

"And where are the poor crickets supposed to go?"
        "They'll find somewhere else."

I put the lawnmower away and decided that, in my garden, they are more than welcome.

On a branch sits a sparrow one is a hand-painted acrylic painting in portrait format by the artist Karen Kaspar.
A female sparrow is perched on a branch, looking curiously to the right. The background is abstracted in soft pastel colours and suggests the branches of a bush.

If you have a bug zapper up, it's time to take it down.

A University of Delaware study analyzed nearly 14,000 insects killed by zappers over one summer. Mosquitoes accounted for less than 1%. The other 99%? Moths, beetles, midges, fireflies, and other beneficial insects.

It's even worse than it sounds: mosquitoes find you by carbon dioxide, body heat, and skin chemistry. Your zapper is completely invisible to them.

Meanwhile it's running all night massacring the pollination night shift.

A photo of a rainbow taken from our garden. Rainbows are usually in a different spot, so this one surprised me and I didn't really think of the aesthetics of the shot - we were out with Kitty-Boo, and she was dragging me away. In the bottom half of the photo a bit of our house and the garage are visible. The stony etrance to the cellar can also be seen. The rest are some coniferous trees growing around the house. The top half of the photo is taken up by the sky, which is mostly covered by whitish clouds, with some light blue peeking from among them. In the centre, on the blue sky backdrop, is a rainbow. It dissipates as it goes up into the clouds, so only a part of it is visible. Below the rainbow and mostly covered by a big spruce, is the church spire. From a better vantage point, the rainbow would be seen arcing above the church.

8 yr old Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The butterflies he had tended as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. When he released them into the wild, they would fly right back to him. Was it possible they actually remembered him?

Jo wrote a letter to an entomologist at Georgetown University, Dr. Martha Weiss. He asked if she could help him design an experiment, and she said yes.

Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70% of them still avoided the scent. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis, yet the memory survived anyway. Then he bred them.

The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to lavender their grandmother had been taught to fear.

Jo presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.

A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.

"The Greenland shark is the planet's oldest vertebrate, reckoned to be somewhere between 272 and 512 years old. They are slow, as befits a fish so venerable. They live deep-down and secret lives.

I am glad not to be a Greenland shark; I don't have enough thoughts to fill five hundred years. But I find the very idea of them hopeful. They will see us pass through whichever spinning chaos we may currently be living through, and the crash that will come after it, and they will live through the currently unimaginable things that will come after that: the transformations, revelations, the possible liberations.

That is their beauty, and it's breathtaking; they go on. These slow, half-blind creatures are perhaps the closest thing to eternal this planet has to offer."

                                                            Kite in the Blue

I spotted this Mississippi kite (Ictinia mississippiensis) circling overhead, and I’m pretty sure it spotted me right back. They’re relatively small raptors, built for high, effortless soaring, and this one seemed unusually interested in my backyard. Mississippi kites don’t typically go after other birds, but with all the anoles skittering around the house, it may have been scouting for a quick snack.

"A Mississippi kite in flight has a kind of quiet elegance, and this image captures that feeling with real clarity. The bird is suspended against a clean, cloudless blue sky, its wings stretched wide in a smooth, confident glide. The wings form a gentle crescent — long, narrow, and slightly curved — with the darker upper feathers creating a soft contrast against the lighter underside.

Its body is slim and tapered, giving the impression of a creature built for effortless movement. The head is small and rounded, angled just enough to suggest awareness and purpose. The tail fans out behind it in a neat triangle, subtly forked, acting like a rudder guiding its motion.

The overall impression is one of calm mastery: a bird that doesn’t fight the air but belongs to it. The sky around it is empty, which makes the kite feel even more solitary and serene — a single shape etched against a vast backdrop, gliding with the kind of grace that seems almost weightless." - Microsoft Copilot
