Black Skimmers are a tern-like seabird that breeds in North and South America.

They use their specialized lower mandible, which is longer than the upper, to catch fish in river shallows and coastal waters.

    Wrapping up a week in the north woods. We escaped the heat wave, caught a few trout, and were entertained by the common loons, our State Bird.

    [Note: these pics were shot with an 800mm (full-frame equivalent) lens and are cropped. Even so, they still seem too close. I didn’t approach this closely, wanting to respect their space. We stopped about 100 meters from them and cut the boat motor. The loons swam close to us as we silently watched, probably getting within 20-30m at closest pass.]

              Habt einen schönen Montag. Kommt gut in und durch die neue Woche.

              Eine Silbermöwe (Larus argentatus) steht auf einem Dach und schaut scheinbar grimmig. Sie ist im Profil zu sehen. Der Schnabel ist gelb mit einem roten Gonysfleck, der auf den Unterschnabel beschränkt ist. Die Iris ist schwefelgelb, das Auge mit einem orangegelben Ring umgeben. Kopf, Hals, Nacken und Unterseite sind wie auch Bürzel und Schwanz überwiegend reinweiß. An Kopf und Hals ist die graue Strichelung des Winterkleides zu erkennen. Mantel, Rücken und Schulterfedern sind wie auch die Flügeloberseite hell bläulichgrau. Die Schwingenspitzen sind weiß. Auf den beiden äußeren Handschwingen ist zudem – durch ein subterminales, schwarzes Band von der Spitze getrennt – ein weiteres weißes Feld vorhanden. Auf dem zusammengelegten Flügel wirken die weißen Spitzen wie eine Reihe rundlicher Punkte. Die Beine und Füße sind rosa. Im Winterkleid ist das weiße Gefieder des Kopfes bei adulten Vögeln mit graubraunen Stricheln durchsetzt. Auf dem Schnabel zeigt sich etwas Schwarz über oder neben dem roten Gonysfleck.

                                        Vögel in einem Sommerwald ist eine handgefertigte Papiercollage im Hochformat der Künstlerin Karen Kaspar. Das Bild zeigt drei rote Vögel, die auf schlanken Ästen von hohen, schlanken Bäumen sitzen. Die Baumstämme in dunklen Brauntönen heben sich vom Hintergrund in satten, leuchtenden Grüntönen ab. Dichtes grünes Laub umgibt die Bäume und Vögel. Die Baumstämme und Äste wurden mit Acrylfarbe auf Papier gemalt und dann als Collage auf den mit Aquarellfarben gemalten Hintergrund montiert und mit den aquarellierten Vögeln kombiniert.                                                 Bluebird on Twisted Cable

                                                Here is a photo of an Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) perched on a powerline. I’ve been wondering about the source of the shade that falls across the bird’s head. Its posture caught my attention — the way it lifts its head and looks up over its shoulder — along with the small glint of sunlight reflecting from its eye.

Shadow covers much of its head and neck, but a muted wash of gold feathers glows softly at the throat. Against that darkness, the blue plumage on its crown and back catches the light, standing out in crisp contrast. The left eye, though deep and dark, reflects a small bright glint. Its folded blue wings overlap neatly, and the tail extends straight behind them. Black legs and talons grip the cable firmly, creating a stark, elegant contrast against the open sky.

                                                      this poor young crow fledged from its nest this week, and enjoyed two glorious days of sunshine learning how to hop-glide from tree to tree, asking mom and dad to feed them every 10 minutes.

                                                      last night, the rain started.

                                                      welcome to adulthood kid.
