Today, as we mark Womenβs Day in South Africa, we do so not merely as a national observance, but as a theological and moral summons. On 9 August 1956, thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings in protest of pass laws, refusing to accept systems that denied human dignity and restricted freedom. Their courage continues to speak into our present moment. As people of faith, we affirm that every woman is created in the image and likeness of God, for Scripture declares: "So God created humankind in his image, male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). Therefore, any system, attitude, practice, or silence that diminishes women stands against the justice of God.
The liberation of women is not a side issue for the Church; it belongs to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In Christ, we are made one, and no person is less worthy, less gifted, or less called because of gender. Paul reminds us that "there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28b). This does not erase our differences, but it forbids the Church from using difference as a reason for exclusion, silence, or oppression.
At BMC, we are called to be a community where women are honoured, heard, protected, encouraged, and invited to participate fully in the life and mission of the Church. We give thanks for women who lead, pray, teach, visit, serve, organise, care, and carry the burdens of families and communities, often without recognition. Yet gratitude alone is not enough. We must make space, open doors, share responsibility, confront harmful attitudes, and ensure that our church life reflects the justice, compassion, and the love of Christ. Therefore, women of 1956 teach us that faith must be embodied in courageous action. We encourage every member of our BMC family to honour the women among us not only with words, but with action; not only on Womenβs Day, but in the daily life of the Church and society.
