Vogue Business: Do Smart Glasses Have a Surveillance Problem?. “Big Tech has been borrowing from fashion’s playbook to improve its image, and the new Kylie partnership and glasses line launch is its biggest pivot to fashion and culture yet. Beneath the question of whether Jenner can finally make Meta’s smart glasses cool, there’s a much more challenging question for Meta and its rivals. […]

Donella Meadows' famous "Leverage Points" essay outlines where to intervene in a system. In the realm of privacy and big tech, the European Union is trying to change the "rules of the system"—one of the highest leverage points available—to shift power back to internet citizens. 🇪🇺⚖️
To track how European policy is attempting to shift the rules of global digital systems, follow these accounts:

Today, the European Parliament allowed the suspicionless mass scanning of private communications (“Chat Control 1.0”) to pass, a measure it had rejected twice in March. Although a majority of voting Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) actually opposed the regulation (314 against, 276 in favor, 17 abstentions), the motion to reject it failed to secure the required absolute majority of 361 votes. As a result, mass scanning is now permitted again until 2028.

#EU citizen should know what this is means:
>Your documents will be snooped.
>Your photographs will be scanned.
>Your chats will be read.
>You are presumed guilty and subject to surveillance without warrant.
>You are assessed by an AI model.
>Your privacy has been sold to Meta, Microsoft and US tech giants in the name of protection.
>Oh, and politicians have exempted themselves from this scan!

After the EU parliament has rejected it TWICE in the past, it has been pushed as an urgent procedure for a new plenary vote. The EU has simply continued to put the vote on the agenda to get the outcome they've wanted since the start.
This is not democratic‼️

The European Parliament Approved "Chat Control 1.0“ with Conditions — It Calls for Encryption Protection
On Thursday, July 9, the European Parliament approved in principle the renewal of the temporary message-scanning regime. The regime is nicknamed „Chat Control 1.0“…
Chat Control 1.0 has passed, a shameful affair, literally every scientist or expert can explain why this is a bad idea. The next step is clear , everybody should move to E2EE applications where possible. Also check if the provider uses opensource, is transparant.

🚨 The European Parliament is one vote away from mandating the mass scanning of private messages. On July 7, MEPs fast-tracked Chat Control 1.0. The final, binding vote follows on Thursday, July 9.

Apple says it would rather pull iMessage and FaceTime from the UK entirely than comply with new surveillance demands. Under the amended law, companies must clear security features with the government before release and scan encrypted messages on request.
Notice what makes that threat possible: Apple is a company with a headquarters, a server, and a product it can be forced to change or withdraw.
An app with none of those has nothing to weaken.

"To the argument that certain technologies and surveillance are in some way inevitable, I don't believe that to be true. It certainly doesn't have to be. You don't need to buy or use these invasive technologies, and you can reject them. Friends don't let friends wear pervert glasses." - Zack Whittaker

Small local-AI habit that pays off: write down which tasks should stay fully local before picking models or hardware. Privacy, latency, and cost decisions get much clearer when the boundary is explicit. For homelabs, that list is often more useful than another benchmark. #LocalAI #SelfHosted #Privacy #Homelab

"In recent years, the Signal messaging app has become a newsroom staple, enabling journalists, colleagues, sources, and others to speak to one another securely with end-to-end encryption. This means no one except those in conversation — not even the service provider — can read your messages or listen in on your calls. Journalists use it individually, and we also see a trend toward using organizational Signal tiplines.
But it’s important to understand this is not a ”set it and forget it” decision. When talking to sensitive contacts, you do need to maintain your account to ensure it is safe and does not fall into the wrong hands.
Imagine if someone took over your Signal account. They could impersonate you, causing reputational damage, or worse, putting sources at risk. Unfortunately, this is not a hypothetical. We have seen at least one public example (and some less public) where newsrooms have lost access to Signal identifiers, sometimes leading to abuse.
There are a few simple things journalists can do to maximize the safety of their Signal account."

Meta's push for artificial intelligence dominance comes with a different kind of cost as layoffs, employee surveillance and departures fuel reports of a heated internal climate. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/07/02/tech/fear-anger-meta-ai/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #tech #markzuckerberg #meta #facebook #instagram #whatsapp #socialmedia #privacy #personaldata #ai #jobs
"I think this backlash against smart glasses is justified from a security and privacy perspective. Using technology to secretly record someone else isn't new, but bringing this audio- and video-collecting wearable tech into the mainstream has the potential to make it easier to carry out cybercrime and fraud by lowering the bar to entry for abuse.
The ability to covertly record and play back something displayed on someone's phone or computer screen or while someone taps in their password on a keyboard presents a major security problem — especially if that person is unaware of it happening. Recording sensitive data also creates a future risk of that information getting compromised, hacked, or obtained by a legal authority.
It is understandable why some are reframing smart glasses as "pervert glasses," by rejecting the sanitized marketing of tech companies and calling these products what they see them as: surveillance devices. It also speaks to the distrust that some consumers have with tech giants after years of abuses and scandals misappropriating people's data.
There are valid concerns that smart glasses on the market today could soon bake-in more privacy invading tech, like facial recognition."

Zerion 2.0.6 is out.
No servers. No phone number. Everything over Tor. Post-quantum encryption (ML-KEM-768 + X25519) on every message, not just the handshake, so “harvest now, decrypt later” has nothing to harvest.
This release: adding contacts is rock solid, dropped connections recover instantly, pairing hardened. The whole build went through a full code and security review before shipping.
Open source, GPLv3. On F-Droid, Google Play, and direct APK.
