Just a quick rant: I prefer to support small businesses, but it bugs me when a companyʻs “web site” is just an #Instagram or #Facebook page. I understand that many folks may not have the time nor talent to put together a simple site, but by not doing so these small businesses are demanding that every potential customer turn over data to Zuckerberg - and to every broker and marketer that he sells our data to. So please folks, donʻt force us potential customers to avoid your biz. #tech #privacy
🚨 NEWS: Meta rimuove la funzione AI di Instagram dopo le critiche per la privacy
Ecco i punti chiave in breve:
💡 Meta ha fatto marcia indietro su una controversa funzione di intelligenza artificiale su Instagram, lanciata solo pochi giorni fa e ora rimossa dopo le proteste di utenti e agenzie...

Local AI privacy tip: treat prompts like logs. If an assistant helps with ops, invoices, customer notes, or source snippets, keep the default path local and make cloud calls an explicit choice. Boring architecture, very useful habit. #LocalAI #Privacy #SelfHosted
"Opt out of global data surveillance programs like PRISM, XKeyscore and Tempora.
Help make mass surveillance of entire populations uneconomical! We all have a right to privacy, which you can exercise today by encrypting your communications and ending your reliance on proprietary services.
I just spent 15 minutes reading the privacy policy of a new smart home app, and it's basically a 30-page legal document giving them the right to harvest my local network data. The worst part? Most people just click 'Agree' because they have no choice. We desperately need more hardware that doesn't treat the customer as the product. End of rant.

AI agents are assigned control over our lives in a way that can not be justified, and it raises worrying privacy concerns.

@thenewoil Thinking that Meta would choose to keep users thoughts/emotions read only would be naive.
If their AI's can access and read users emotions, they can use their outputs to influence emotions, as Meta's much cruder 2012 study showed.
That pales in comparison to what would be possible now.
The importance of transparency in what the algorithms show you and why has never been more important.
Instagram is the only big tech social media site I use.
Meta just made some pretty big changes that infringe more on privacy than ever.
Today, I got a message from IG telling me my location was turned off. Duh. I turned it off just like I turned off photos, contacts & every other invasive access point.
I responded & told it to stop messaging me. It responded that it will not contact me again, but I can ask a question any time in the future. 😂 I don't think so.
Let this sink in. On July 9, more MEPs voted against Chat Control than for it. 314 to reject, 276 to keep. And it passed anyway, extended to 2028.
A second-reading rule required an absolute majority of 361 to block it, so a clear majority against wasn’t enough. The vote was scheduled for the last day before summer recess, when seats were empty.
When “no” wins the count but loses the vote, the architecture matters more than ever. No server, nothing to scan.

I've been recommending people use/try #DeltaChat more than #Signal and it's worked far better than I thought! It's screen reader friendly also, across desktop and mobile! At least, on Windows anyway. https://delta.chat/en/help#multiclient #Chat #Privacy
It's been a couple months since I switched my primary mobile device to be Wi-fi only.
No phone number.
No mobile data, phone calls, or SMS.
I have a secondary device that I keep switched off unless/until I want it, and that's the one with my phone number on it now.
I very rarely need to turn that device on.
If not for the handful of SMS-only MFA services I have no choice but to use (typically government and banking stuff), I don't strictly need mobile service.

I don't know who needs to hear this today, but everyone in your family or your household is entitled to #privacy.
The fact that you are a parent of a child does not make it okay to invade your child's privacy.
The fact that you are a spouse does not make it okay to invade your spouse's privacy.
The fact that you share a domicile with someone does not make it okay to invade your housemate's privacy, no matter your relationship to them.

Government-mandated gatekeepers have no place between Americans and lawful speech. CCIA’s Fifth Circuit brief argues Texas’ SB2420 imposes unconstitutional barriers to lawful speech by requiring age verification, parental consent, and compelled age ratings. Americans shouldn’t have to surrender their #privacy or show ID to access lawful information online. Why no email, phone, or name at signup: each of those isn't just a convenience field, it's a permanent link between "this account" and "a real person" — one that outlives any privacy setting you configure afterward, because it was never private to begin with.
Anonymity by default means there's no real identity in the system to protect in the first place. Not a toggle, not an advanced setting — the only way the app works.

I shopped at Tesco yesterday and was left extremely irritated - I had left my club card at home my trousers (changed clothes as warm and sunny). Without knowing that magic number you can’t use scan-as-you shop, but worse all the price labels taunt you about the substantial discounts giving up your privacy comes with. I bought only the essentials. I’d have picked Asda if I’d realised in time. #Tesco #Privacy #LoyaltyCards
