I don’t like playing the futurologist, but after seeing AI companies warn EU institutions about the supposed risks of open-weight models, I suspect some are lobbying to regain control over genuine open source and open-weight AI.

Don’t fall into the trap: the greater danger lies in opaque, proprietary models, not open-source ones.

I thought scaling Tor meant adding more relays.

What it actually meant was multiplying failure modes...

I now operate 24 Tor relays and bridges across 15 locations, 11 ASNs and 6 operating systems.

Every new relay brings another provider, firewall, IPv6 route, service manager, identity key, backup and recovery plan.

Some things I learned along the way:

🌍 More countries don’t automatically mean real diversity
🔑 The server is replaceable, the relay identity isn’t
🛠️ Linux, BSD and SunOS need the same outcomes, not the same commands
📊 What I configured isn’t always what the Tor network currently sees

A large fleet is easy to count. A resilient one is much harder to keep alive.

That on its own is a red flag to someone like me, who believes private donations to politicians and their parties should be illegal. But that’s not the biggest problem of this donation.

The biggest problem is what kind of a party this Mullvad owner personally donated to. It’s to the Örebro Party. A party with policies so broad and across the spectrum they seem to appeal to everyone all at once. But one of them, the key one in fact, stands out as the most incompatible with privacy and personal freedom. Values that the Mullvad company claims to uphold.

Örebro's political platform amounts to establishing a deeply authoritarian surveillance state in order to enforce their policies. If I just told you what it is you might not immediately see why it’s a problem so let me give you a deep political analysis of this situation."

In response to a discussion around use of generative AI as it relates to contributions to the Linux code base, Linus (creator and lead contributor to Linux) firmly states that AI contributions are welcome.

But then he goes on and concludes with this:

This is *NOT* some kind of "social warrior" project, never has been, and never will be.

In the kernel community we do open source because it results in better technology, not because of religious reasons.

A lot of us are on Linux specifically because of the social and political positives. Closed source is control. Open source is democracy.

Linus doing the typical tech-bro "i don't think of politics, I only think of tech" harkens back to any number of "science without ethics" atrocities.

Linus is and has always been a tech-bro (or proto tech bro). He has his throne of power and is happy where he is. Other tech-bros want money and influence. They're all the same.

But Linus is wrong.

Tech is politics.

And his stance and guiding influence with Linux is wrong.

Linus just made a political statement and has shifted the politics and societal approach of Linux.
