I just got finished watching Project Hail Mary. It’s a very entertaining sci-fi movie that stars Ryan Gosling, who also produced the film.
This movie has it all: intriguing plot, humor, action, drama, and surprises.
It’s not super scientifically accurate but I’ll give that a pass since the movie is so good otherwise. I’d rate it a solid 9 out of 10. Highly recommended!
The good things: Gerard Butler and Marena Bacarrin are great and the visuals are very impressive throughout the movie.
The movie balances showing the raw desperation of humanity along with the goodness and hope of humanity. There is a long sequence in France that was particuarly emotional and good. It can all be attributed by the performance by William Abadie as a kind human and father doing his best.
Don't be friends with this family, they are bad luck -- they have all the good luck, those around them, not so much.
A lot of movie is illogical and a lot of things happen just because they needed to happen. It all robs the movie of credibility and breaks any emotional resonance.
The basis for this sequel takes some inspiration from Neil Stephenson's Seveneves about orbiting space objects entering the Earth's atmosphere.
Greenland (rated 6 out of 10) never needed a sequel, it got one and after watching the sequel, I still think it didn't need a sequel.
Greenland 2: Migration has its moments, but it lands with a thud by the time the credits roll. The movie is able to generate some scenes of real tension, though a lot of it is unearned -- and even more of it left me thinking what Gerard Butler's character said, "You've got to be kidding."
Rated 4 out of 10.
Streamed on HBO Max.

"Artificial," the Luca Guadagnino drama about the few days when Sam Altman was ousted from OpenAI, has found distribution after being dropped by Amazon MGM. The nearly finished film was apparently insufficiently sympathetic to Altman, whose company recently entered a strategic partnership with Amazon. NEON has now picked up the movie, which stars Andrew Garfield as the antihero, and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. Here's @AVClub's take.

The host Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) is a bit obnoxious, a bit dismissive and seemingly uninterested in the topic of this visibly surface-level documentary about grimdark.
It doesn’t help that two of the producers of the movie, Eric Michael Robertson and Cody Taylor are founders of Buer Games which produces a game that is heavily featured in the movie without being disclosed.
It was really cool to see all the models and art featured in the movie. Grimdark looks very cool and I will need to explore more, I wish this movie went deeper.
The interview with John Blanche was intriguing.
Rated 3 out of 10.
Streamed on Tubi.

Today's movie was Supergirl (2026). I'm not sure why there's so much hate for this movie, I really enjoyed it -- it's nice to see a Kryptonian that is not all about hope and is not perfect, yet is still good.
Strangely the movie's main character arc really doesn't belong to Supergirl.
This movie differentiates Superman from Supergirl: Whereas Superman is Hope, Supergirl is Cynicism.
Rated 7 out of 10.

A BBC story about the Teochew movie I posted about recently.
Teochew is my mother tongue and I hate that I have rarely / never been able to listen to or watch media in it, because of Mandarin hegemony everywhere.

It seems the filmmakers weren't even trying based on how this actor's (double) gun sights are configured. How does that even work?
Everything Everywhere All at Once is an action, sci-fi and family drama film and it is one of the best movies I have seen in years. Visually stunning, all original and a perfectly balanced movie that straddles so many genres. Everything Everywhere All at Once had me laughing and crying. It is exceedingly funny, yet heartbreaking and touching. I highly recommended Everything Everywhere All at Once.
This movie is a masterpiece.

incredible article, now 25 years old, on the lighting and cinematography of Conrad Hall & Sam Mendes' Road To Perdition.
"The palette for the movie was very muted," Mendes says. "Very early on, Conrad and I talked about creating a sense of great contrast within images by using hard light from the side and chiaroscuro. We wanted dark backgrounds and dark sets with dark, muted greens and grays.
"For example, he'll use black silk for daylight exteriors because it cuts a perfect amount of light to make a scene look as though it's in the shade. White silk makes light flare, but black silk doesn't bring all that flare back and doesn't fill the whole scene up with fill light. On this film, we never shot in harsh sunlight; we always used black silks to dim down the scene and then relit it the way Conrad wanted it to look. He also uses different papers and double softs, and mixes hard and soft light almost constantly."
