& now there's YA reason: last week, #GitHub urged the FOSS community to *oppose* important #California legislation that places transparency and consumer rights requirements on deployment of LLM-gen-AI!
GitHub's tactic? Disinformation claiming #FOSS licenses are incompatible with Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §22757 and California #SB1000 (which seeks to amend §22757).

Slovenia’s new coalition under Janez Janša is accelerating measures that critics say weaken civil society, media, and democratic oversight. 🇸🇮⚖️
Janša’s government also faces warnings over expanded surveillance powers, privacy risks, and digital rights impacts in Slovenia and the EU. 🔒

Meta just open-sourced Astryx 🤯
It's the design system Meta has reportedly used for 8+ years, powering 13,000+ internal apps. Released under the MIT license, it includes 150+ React components, themes, templates, and a CLI.
Would you use open-source software from Meta, or does the company behind it make you hesitate?
Does open source change your opinion?

Technology is politics -- especially in the Age of the Broligarchs.
The People's Movements should be using the People's Software.

US Supreme Court ruled police generally need a valid warrant backed by probable cause before using geofence searches for cellphone location data. ⚖️
The 6-3 Chatrie ruling recognizes location records as private, limiting broad geofence warrants and strengthening digital privacy protections. 🔒

#Enpoopification has already come to #Roku
I came home last night and my home screen looked different. There were more recommendations and now a quick access row. I turned both of them off, but my home screen still looked different.
I'm not certain, but I think the home screen icon area got smaller, and the advertising area bigger.
Ugh. I need to replace roku with something #FOSS. We really need an easy solution. I mean, #syncthing-easy, not nextcloud-self-hosting-easy.
One of the many new features coming in #LibreOffice 26.8, our next major release (due in August): the Word Count dialog now shows stats for before and after the cursor. Thanks to Tien Nguyen Minh for adding this! https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/26.8 #foss #openSource #freesoftware
Canada’s Bill C-22 just passed third reading, rushed through with limited debate. It lets the government compel companies to build backdoors into encryption.
Signal and NordVPN have said they’ll leave Canada entirely if it passes. Apple and Meta are urging amendments.
Here’s what a backdoor mandate can’t touch: an app with no company to compel and no server to weaken. You can’t order a backdoor into something that has no door.

Every week brings another breach, and a pattern underneath them: the more identity a system collects, the more there is to steal. Passports, fingerprints, phone numbers, all sitting in databases waiting to leak.
The fix isn’t better security on all that data. It’s not collecting it in the first place.
Zerion asks for nothing. No phone number, no email, no ID. Nothing to breach because nothing is stored.

GitHub itself got breached this week. Around 4,000 code repositories taken, and the group behind it says they’ll sell the source rather than ask for ransom.
Even the platform that hosts the world’s code is a single point that can be hit.
It’s exactly why Zerion treats GitHub as a public mirror, not a dependency. The code is GPLv3 and can live anywhere. Nothing critical relies on it staying up.
