Who Wants to Lay Her Eggs in Another Bird's Nest

Here, a female brown‑headed cowbird (Molothrus ater) lifts one wing as if to answer the question — or maybe to say, “Let me, let me.” Brown‑headed cowbirds are brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of other bird species and relying on those unsuspecting foster parents to raise their young.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

"A female brown‑headed cowbird pauses on a curved metal rod, caught in a moment that feels both delicate and full of motion. Her body is angled slightly forward, talons curled securely around the smooth metal. Her plumage is a tapestry of soft browns: the chest and belly finely streaked like brushed grain, the wings and tail a warmer, richer brown that deepens toward the tips.

One wing lifts high above her head, fanned open in a graceful arc. The light catches each feather, revealing their layered structure — long primaries stretching outward like slender blades, shorter coverts overlapping in tidy rows. The raised wing gives her a poised, almost balletic silhouette, as though she’s stretching, signaling, or preparing for a subtle shift in balance.

Her head is small and rounded, the beak short and sturdy, perfect for cracking seeds. A single dark eye glints with alertness. Behind her, the background dissolves into a soft blur of greens and golds, making her stand out sharply — a quiet moment of wild beauty suspended in time." - Microsoft Copilot

Seems timely, since we are in midst of multiple events, to post about 2 Canadian made film projects that explore what the world would be like, without humans.

First up is, Aftermath: Population Zero aka Aftermath: The World After Humans.

Imagine if one minute from now, every single person on Earth disappeared. All of us. Human history just stopped. What would happen to the world without us? Aftermath: Population Zero features what scientists and others speculate the earth, animal life, and plant life might be like if humanity no longer existed, as well as the effect that humanity's disappearance would have on the artefacts of civilization. this documentary is inspired by Alan Weisman's The World Without Us.

Nature-Positive Leadership: What Can We Learn from Japan and Japanese Companies by Henning Ohlsson & Alastair Bourne, 2026

This book looks at how Japanese companies approach sustainability amid current global challenges. It takes a close look at the cultural background to these efforts including the importance of nature in Japanese society and how it has influenced modern day sustainability programmes.

          link.springer.com/book/10.1007

The book does not argue that Japan has been free of environmental problems or that all Japanese companies have the same approach. Nor does it assert that Japanese companies or a Japanese approach is perfect. Instead, it provides some hints about why a Japanese approach-style may just be the way forward in these difficult times. What can Western business leaders learn from Japanese culture and the Japanese leadership mindset? We live in a time of radical uncertainty. The future risks of climate change are more than well known. But they are being suppressed by both politics and business. Science and physics are very clear.

Nature-positive means more than just minimising the damage. For business leaders, it also means giving something back to nature and seeing this contribution not as a cost, but as an investment. This book is a journey of transformation of companies. And a journey through the mountains and nature. Over the centuries, Japanese culture has developed a deep respect for natural systems. And from this, it has also developed a logic for business that considers companies, society and nature in equal measure. It is a must-read for companies struggling to maintain a positive balance sheet and remain sustainable at the same time, in the backdrop of climate crisis and mitigating regulations.

🧬 For 150 years, lichens were biology's textbook example of symbiosis: a fungus plus an alga, working together. Simple, elegant, settled science.

Except it wasn't. In 2016, genetic sequencing revealed a third partner hiding in plain sight - a basidiomycete yeast embedded in the lichen's outer cortex. Scientists had been looking at it through microscopes for over a century and assumed it was part of the host fungus.

This explains a mystery that frustrated mycologists for decades: why they could never grow a lichen in the lab from just the "known" two partners. The cultures always failed to develop the right shape or chemistry. The recipe was missing an ingredient.

The yeast's abundance correlates with variations in lichen body plans, suggesting it helps sculpt the very forms taxonomists had been cataloguing all along.

This high definition video has been edited to include the separate mobbing action, but it is not AI.

I’ve been wondering about the source of the shade that falls across the bird’s head. Its posture caught my attention — the way it lifts its head and looks up over its shoulder — along with the small glint of sunlight reflecting from its eye.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

Its back faces the viewer, and its head tilts upward, the slightly hooked black beak angled toward the upper left of the frame. Shadow covers much of its head and neck, but a muted wash of gold feathers glows softly at the throat. Against that darkness, the blue plumage on its crown and back catches the light, standing out in crisp contrast. The left eye, though deep and dark, reflects a small bright glint. Its folded blue wings overlap neatly, and the tail extends straight behind them. Black legs and talons grip the cable firmly, creating a stark, elegant contrast against the open sky.

Despite the devastating drought in our community, we're so happy to see the seedlings in our nursery bed thriving from our hard work of watering . Soon we'll have more plants to put in our prepared land and eventually more food for the needy. When we join hands together, many dreams become realities.
