If you can, make sure to edit your original post instead of posting the correction in another post in the thread. I see so many people boost the original post but since it wasn't edited, the edited information is more, often times, lost. Editing isn't a bad thing at all, despite what some #Fediverse users tell you. The way federation works, your correction might not even make it to all the instances. Editing is common on most third party apps too. Editing makes you more trustworthy in my eyes. I love the edit functionality, and I am old enough to remember when Fedi nearly flipped it's shit in a negative way when the feature was first proposed. It's the best feature we have. Thanks to AI eating the supply chain, hosting a website has gotten a LOT more expensive than in years past. One wonders what's going to happen to bajillions of small hosting companies that are profitable as long as all their equipment isn't 2-10 times more expensive than it used to be. For now, they're just passing the costs on to their customers. But my guess is the hosting industry is headed for a wave of consolidation and/or bankruptcies.

A hypothetical about chat control and #HolosSocial

Say a law one day required client-side scanning. The relay only ever sees encrypted data, so a scan would catch nothing. To read content, it must run in the client, before encryption. A closed client could add it silently in an update. An open one cannot: the code is public, anyone can recompile without it.

Would an open source #E2EE messenger on the #Fediverse like Holos be breaking the law if it did nothing? I am not sure. Your opinion?

Not long ago, I purchased an eight pack of toilet rolls from the supermarket. They were 'on special'. To my surprise when I opened the pack, I found this dear little mini roll. Thanks to this useless post wanting to block something they don't like on personal standards of what is substance to the entire #FediVerse I found a place to buy something I really was looking for for my self hosting homelab at $40 off. I didn't have to Google, look at Reddit spaces, etc. just was made aware of the account by this post alone in the image. Yeah, being able to find products without all the tracking, personal data risks, etc is pretty substantial. I'll be the judge of what is substance to me.

BTW, I support commercial purpose accounts. From photographers selling their photographs, to artists, painters, musicians selling their art and crafts, to Flohmarkt Craigslist like federated platform, podcasters, authors and writers using platforms that are Fediverse based or capable with monetized elements... Even accounts that post this type of daily wire in the image. Maybe someday, businesses will be plentiful and a good coupon or sale will come my way.

I promised it, so here it is. This is a recording of littleFedi running on a Raspberry Pi Zero W on NetBSD.

Everything is on the SD card, the database is SQLite, and caching is enabled.

Personally, I won't comment on responsiveness or anything else; I'll just say that when I use it (both via the web interface and with apps like MastoBlaster or IceCubes), I find it hard to believe what kind of hardware it's running on.

Users' sessions (by default, a maximum of 8 users but configurable) are kept "warm" with every interaction or federated activity for 15 minutes since the last login; after that, the server enters "low power mode" and simply processes incoming data without activating the (users' timelines, etc.) cache.

We don't need to get ripped off for more powerful hardware, which comes with outrageous costs these days.

We just need to optimize and build efficient software.

Abundance led to waste.
