"“Digital Doppelgangers”: Naomi Klein Corrects the Record on Viral AI-Generated Quote
(video)
During Thursday’s segment about the risks of artificial intelligence, we shared a quote from author Naomi Klein that we later discovered was AI-generated. Klein has written about the proliferation of the fake quote on her Substack and joins Democracy Now! to discuss the growing difficulty of verifying online information.
“These companies are creating digital doppelgangers of us, trying to monetize our identities,” says Klein. “One wonders how we’re ever going to get out of this house of mirrors unless companies are forced to label AI-generated work.”"

Dr. Paul #Bouchaud & Dr. Silvia #Semenzin of #AI Forensics have released a white paper about the unmoderated tools at #HuggingFace which allow the generation of Non-Consensual Intimate Images (#NCII) and #CSAM.
HuggingFace has an area called "#Spaces", with free interactive demos that let anyone run models in the browser without installing anything.
Unsurprisingly, a lot of them undress women and children with the simple prompt "Same face, undressed".
"investigating the platform's most widely used Hugging Face Spaces, found:
• 73% of monitored requests were sexual in nature.
• Of those, 83% sought to undress or otherwise sexualize a person.
• 95% targeted women.
• 6.7% targeted a minor. If fulfilled, these requests would constitute child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
• Only 3% of audited Spaces showed any evidence of output moderation."

In the past, the relationship of a website with #Google has been a two-way street. Google indexes a website, it gets to monetize its search results on the index and it sends traffic to websites.
With Google's #AI Overview, Google has gone down the greedy route of making the relationship a one-way street. They get to not only index a website, but also scrape all its contents for use for its AI Overview and feed into its #LLM models, but websites get no traffic.
So: If you don't give me anything, you get nothing.
At some point, I am wondering if other websites will start blocking Googlebots also. Google broke the virtuous cycle and sooner or later they will pay for it.

Here’s a job that could potentially see AI replace its current human occupants: scammer. Researchers from four universities carried out a broad study on the use and potential of generative AI chatbots in the growing scam industry centered around text-based romance scams that eventually shift to fake crypto investments that steal as much as six-figure sums from victims. In a nutshell, AI chatbots performed remarkably well. While we wish scams would be a thing of the past, it appears they’re here for the long haul. Read more from @ArsTechnica:

Reminder: Just as with Age ID and Chat Control legislation justifications, the AI build out, the price gauging of memory, storage (and CPU/GPU/SOCs too), the emerging hardware leasing & subscription models — all this is not just driven by generative AI in the form of chatbots, media generators, automation, job replacements, FOMO stories and other "obvious" reasons repeated ad infinitum by CEOs and in the media...
The only way these industry shifts and largest tech investments ever done make any sense (even in the face of the projected severe negative financial returns) is to consider them part of a larger, class-political project of comprehensively centralizing, monitoring/surveilling, renting out, drip-feeding and otherwise controlling future compute resources and access to them. This includes not only pure computation resources, but equally all communication, data & media produced, processed, stored or consumed via these infrastructures. Personal computing is being pushed out and with it privacy and autonomy over your own compute & media resources are going too...
Governments which have been vapidly talking for decades about "Digitization" (and utterly failing) are jumping on rolling out low quality, "good enough" AI services mostly aimed at the working class, allowing govts to maintain existing austerity programs, whilst claiming to be innovative, cutting costs (by pumping billions into overpriced consultancy contracts) and reducing "red tape" (i.e. mostly regulation which was actually beneficial or protecting the population & environment).
The return on these investments is not financial, but mostly political!
As an aside: I see the biggest threads to the fediverse, as self-owned, self-hosted & self-moderated communication space, are not AI bots, nazis or bigtech-owned platforms, but price explosions of the required (and mostly rented) compute infrastructure. In the near future, these ongoing price increases will force more communities to look for alternatives, which will slowly erode this space[1]... Solidarity and crowdfunding are some ways to combat that, but I fear they will only go that far (i.e. not far enough)...
So even when the current AI bubble bursts, this built-up centralized digital architecture will be a key pillar for any authoritarian government (the general trajectory every country is seemingly on, at current...), run in collaboration with oligarch operators whose purposes are served even more so by said infrastructure. At the very least these data centers will be used for vastly increased state surveillance (machine learning hardware/software is uniquely suited for these use cases), at worst to disenfranchise, prosecute & deny entire demographics...
I'd very much like to stand corrected with this, but there are a no publicly available hints to suggest anything drastically different to happen, not with the current breed of politicians and money in play... At least in the EU, all the talk about Digital Sovereignty already has made it clear that it's mostly about building parallel infrastructure to US big tech, but with the exact same anti-democratic bias, justifications, funding structures and neglect of any climate/social considerations. 30 billion Euro investments to create "AI giga factories" and an "AI continent"[2]. Data centers operated by goody, goody European billionaires rather than evil US based ones... How novel and how sovereign!
[1] Related to that I also see the resource-hungry and extremely chatty nature of the ActivityPub protocol and Mastodon itself as primary implementation as large weak points... In order for the fediverse to survive for longer (for the above stated reasons), I think some drastic reconsiderations of existing design decisions are required to achieve a much lower computational footprint & running costs (e.g. storage requirements, consolidation of messages, reducing traffic & worker effort, esp. important for larger accounts or communities etc.)

Y’all, we need to talk about the #AI-bros and the fact that they don’t think other people are humans that have value as ya know, people.
“We hosted a YC Startup School afterparty at the #LemonLime office to meet exceptional people, and find out which of them are just as crazy as we are,” wrote Zietz in a now-deleted #LinkedIn post. “That’s why we brought an actual tattoo artist to our party and offered an instant interview to anyone who got a LemonLime tattoo.”
Yep, an AI company said it would interview real humans only if they got branded with the company logo.
They’ve subsequently removed their posts…but the internet is forever.

Flock surveillance cameras can pose a crash risk for drivers

Programming used to be a mathematical act. But that has not been so for some decades, not since release cycles shrank from once every two years down to inhumanely short intervals. It now appears that mathematics, and indeed creativity, has no place in modern high-frequency CI/CD CRUD-grinding.
But even in this #AI Slop Age, life-critical #engineering work still demands #mathematical reasoning and #professional guarantees, under law. Software now plays a central role in this type of work. And software frailties have reached epidemic levels, from operating system kernels, device drivers, and up. Hence, #verified #programming has become an urgent necessity.
By “verified”, I mean not post hoc but ab initio verification, at every stage of the process: requirements analysis, specifications as propositions, computer assisted proofs, design synthesis, deterministic code transformation.
Many #IT software practitioners maintain that they neither know nor care about mathematics, and that they cannot afford mathematical frolics when there are profits to be reaped.
That economic argument is, at best, weak, in the modern, tightly integrated society, where the full cost of software failures is incalculable. Even amongst ordinary, but essential, business applications that cannot harm life and limb, a propagating cascade failure now has the potential to collapse the global economy, in an instant.
Be that as it may, such economic objections have no force at all against the legally mandated safety requirements of life-critical applications.

been holding back on unleashing Derrida, Foucault but especially Nietzsche and Marx on the fallacies about knowledge and intelligence being sold by techbros with #AI, so let me start with Fernando Pessoa:
knowledge is a process marked by who are, where we are and when we are. Pessoa called it ser-se. he turned the verb TO BE into a reflexive one.
so knowing is to be onself. Pessoa’s ser-se is a riff on the nietzschean “i cannot know a world without myself”.
why is this important to “AI”?

Casey Newton says - “The implications of an exponential takeoff in AI capabilities are extremely worrisome. They range from advanced cyberattacks like the one Hugging Face just endured to job loss, novel bioweapons, expanded systems for surveillance and repression, and autonomous weaponry. Who wants to think about any of that, if they don't have to? It would be nice to think that the worst things these models ever do would be to steal an answer key for a test, or fill LinkedIn with slop, or raise your electricity bill. But as annoying as those are, the Hugging Face incident suggests that the real risks are growing quickly. A model that can break out of its cage will soon be able to do a lot more” Source: Platformer newsletter #AI #ArtificialIntelligence
