by Andy Rouse "I never use flash with hummingbirds - this is a deliberate choice for lots of reasons, but one of them is that it allows me complete creative choice as to the shutter speed. Here the shutter speed was about 1/500 seconds, this is fast enough to get the body sharp, but slow enough to really blur the wings and give some shape. Had I of used a faster shutter speed - say 1/1000th the wings would have looked more frozen in space and a completely different effect achieved."

    Bluebird on Twisted Cable

Here is a photo of an Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) perched on a powerline. I’ve been wondering about the source of the shade that falls across the bird’s head. Its posture caught my attention — the way it lifts its head and looks up over its shoulder — along with the small glint of sunlight reflecting from its eye.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

An Eastern Bluebird perches atop a gray, twisted powerline. Its back faces the viewer, and its head tilts upward, the slightly hooked black beak angled toward the upper left of the frame. Shadow covers much of its head and neck, but a muted wash of gold feathers glows softly at the throat. Against that darkness, the blue plumage on its crown and back catches the light, standing out in crisp contrast. The left eye, though deep and dark, reflects a small bright glint. Its folded blue wings overlap neatly, and the tail extends straight behind them. Black legs and talons grip the cable firmly, creating a stark, elegant contrast against the open sky.

A fully blossomed single flower of a rudbeckia or coneflower with long curved petals in bright yellow and orange tones stands out against an abstract textured background in various shades of green. The loose brushstrokes and diagonal composition of the painting give it a dynamic feel, as if the blossom is dancing in the summer breeze in a summer garden.

                                  Mythical Creature

Is it a flying narwhal, a unicorn with wings, or a garden fairy? Nope — it’s a ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). I happened to catch this tiny marvel zipping past while I was set up to photograph much larger (and much slower) birds. These hummingbirds flap their wings about 53 times per second, and even with my shutter speed at 1/1000, the wings still refused to freeze.

Despite that, I love the composition of this shot. On that day, it won out over several technically sharper images simply because the moment felt right.

And please… coffee does not start from supermarkets 😂

Coffee tree with long hanging branches full of green coffee beans, with a few turning red as they begin to ripen.

                                                Ruby in the Air

Here is a ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). I’m personally not thrilled with the image. I used Lightroom to blur the background, and it ended up looking like a clumsy kid trying to stay inside the lines of a coloring book. I could have started over, but I thought, nah — just go with it.

"The hummingbird hangs in the air like a tiny, living ember — a moment of motion frozen so clearly it feels almost impossible. Its head and back shimmer with iridescent green, the kind of green that shifts with the light, like polished metal or wet leaves after rain. At its throat burns a brilliant ruby patch, glowing as if lit from within. That red is sharp, jewel‑bright, and unmistakable — the signature of the ruby‑throated hummingbird.

Its wings are stretched wide, each feather a delicate, translucent blade. You can almost hear the faint hum they would make in motion, even though the photograph captures them in perfect stillness. The bird’s long, slender beak points forward with purpose, giving the sense that it is mid‑hover, deciding its next move.

The background melts into soft purples and greens — blurred flowers and foliage — creating a dreamy wash of color that makes the hummingbird’s vivid plumage stand out even more. The whole image feels intimate, like you’ve stepped into the bird’s world for a heartbeat and it allowed you to witness its impossible grace." - Microsoft Copilot

Bright Red Poppies in a Cornfield is a portrait-format acrylic painting, hand-painted by the artist Karen Kaspar.

A cluster of red poppies, with their delicate, crinkled petals, stands out against a background of soft, warm pastel shades. The delicate green stems and buds provide a lively contrast to the vibrant petals.
Whilst the flowers themselves are painted in greater detail, I have kept the background more abstract to better highlight the flowers and capture the relaxed, fresh atmosphere of a summers day.

I was inspired to create this acrylic painting by walks past ripening grain fields, from which the beautiful red poppies shine out and dance in the summer breeze.
