BlueSky is an Engagement Platform, not a social network.
Being a one-house Engagement Platform means: VC, marketing, advertising, algorithms, and a one-house login.
Of course their "uptake" is faster. Duh.
The #Fediverse is a real social network, consisting of many houses, many logins, no VC, no marketing, and no algorithm.
STOP comparing them like they're equivalents.
All that said, Mastodon(, et al) should *absolutely* copy the 1/x feature!

I assumed that Fediverse could really be an open, progressive environment where to discuss ideas and grow up, with different points of view. But what I'm finding lately, is something different. Narration going from "pro AI / glasses" to "no AI / glasses" so if you don't maintain a position, you are just in favor of fascists or perverts.
The last one I had a discussion with, called me "a waste of time" because I made him realize that a sighted pervert can use his own eyes, without glasses, while I fasten my shoes strings, bent over. Instead of joining me, thinking of a proposal to satisfy blind people's needs while protecting privacy, no. The problem is me.
Same for github/codeberg stuff: do AI-built pull-requests ruin open source software? Yes.
Is AI-generated code dirty and unreliable? Yes.
Have hand made coders the right to prohibit automated code? Yes, of course.
But same coders, went on for years saying "I'm an independant coder, a small company, I have no resources to make it accessible to blind, if you need it, make it yourself".
Now, thanks to assisted coding, many of us blind are doing exactly this: trying to solve their gaps by having the bots fix the issue. Then, to help other users (and the coder himself), they place the fix in form of pull request, into the repository. And it's often refused.
But, would the original coder ever solve accessibility? No. I'm alone, it's a small company, you're the first blind user I hear, and similar bullshit.
What, the fuck, should, we, do?
From far-right, I know what to expect: they're racist, ableists, and all the worst. They don't hide it. But I couldn't definitely expect such behaviours from people caring for freedom, ethics, open technologies, etc. I'm fed up of being considered an object who can gladly be sacrificed for purity of something or someone.

On the link below, Robert (another experienced blind person) talks about "disability dongle", meaning those super-tech hardwares made for disability, but are more for inspirational videos than for real time usage. Expensive and uncomfortable.
Robert talks about hardware but it can easily be applied to AI as well: it's far from affordable, not with disability in mind, it must be well trained and you use more tokens to get what you want...
I'm not pro, I'm not against, I'm in the middle. Appreciate good, hate the bad. And want the discussion to be more balanced.

It’s your weekly curation of the essential news in the Open Media Network and Open Social development communities with a focus on devastating big tech via Techno Anarchism.

As usual, we aim to provide actionable content you can use to destroy Techno Feudalism each week. It has the additional benefit of weakening authoritarianism.
IMHO, the best way to do that is to use tools from the Techno Anarchist Manifesto to build your own site(s) to participate in the Open Media Network. Then you should share it (them) via Real Simple Syndication (RSS), Open Social, and possibly a newsletter or podcast. This approach is similar to what some call the IndieWeb and its POSSE philosophy.
The second best strategy is to have accounts on open social and use the hell out of them. And do the same with a RSS feed reader.

This is a perpetual pet peeve because many people aren’t able to comprehend ⬇️:
- The Fediverse is for communities (private, semi-private, formal, informal, or otherwise)
- and the Atmosphere is for the masses (unwashed, washed, or otherwise).
- and corporate social media is for naive fools and intentional cunts.
So, recognize their natures and don’t ask the two protocols to go against them. This is also why we have accounts on both platforms and use them differently.

An article was submitted to HN how #Authorization terminology is a mess and proposed a way to fix it.
Top-level comment started a discussion on the difference between SHOULD and OUGHT TO. The latter expresses a moral imperative.
SHOULD is defined in #RFC2119 which is referenced in all #ActivityPub specs and #FEPs.
Now, there is an April Fool's RFC6919 which defines OUGHT TO. While this RFC is created just for fun, to express all kinds of wriggle room to a spec, which is often the reality in a codebase, the OUGHT TO indicator is not all that bad for actual use in #fediverse specs.
The fediverse is more than cold, hard technology space. It is a place where particular values and principles are held dear, moral imperatives to build better alternatives to social media.

"Privacy OUGHT TO be protected first and foremost, therefore an opt-in mechanism SHOULD be provided"

Most businesses create social media accounts, and the reason is obvious: to reach customers and partners.
But imagine living in a world dominated by major tech platforms, walled gardens where millions, sometimes billions, of people interact every day. That’s our current reality, shaped by growing corporate control over our digital lives.
Now think of any small business you know: a bar, a restaurant, a tattoo studio, a local shop, a vet clinic…
If most people are still on traditional platforms, what arguments would you give a small business to convince them to share their content on #Pixelfed or #Mastodon, instead of staying on #Instagram or moving to #Bluesky?
Have you tried already? What were the results?
@peachfront But isn’t it easier for a small business that depends on face-to-face networking to succeed on a platform that almost everyone already knows and uses?
Last weekend, I joined a guided tour, and afterwards almost everyone exchanged Instagram accounts.
The tour was excellent, and I could see how hard the owner is working to build a community of people interested in history. He also creates very interesting posts on Instagram, which clearly take a lot of time to prepare.
Doing that through a Fediverse account would be much harder at the moment, if possible at all, given both its smaller user base and the limited overlap with the business’s target audience.
It sure can. I consider #ActivityPub fediverse a social networking environment, and social media a subset of social networking, which I define as: Any direct and indirect human interaction between people.
When you talk of "echo chamber" you refer to a typical anti-pattern of existing social media platforms. It is unfortunate that fediverse grew to be such a microblogging-dominant space, a Twitter++, and it could be said to be a severe lack of imagination on what social networking entails. But it is understandable when we consider how fedi evolves: by post-facto interoperability. Where who comes first decides what goes, and that was Mastodon, a #microblogging app.
Social experience design considers "Personal social networking" where the needs of individual participants are central, and design is inspired by analogies to how we do social offline. #Fediverse becomes a unified space where you navigate communities and move in and out of different social contexts seamlessly.

Arguably #fediverse is NOT based on an open standard.
It's based on 'guidance towards an open standard' via the incomplete #ActivityPub spec, sprinkled with what fediverse devs have added over time via post-facto interoperability in what's effectively a Big ball of mud anti-pattern. These extra's are to be discovered on-the-fly, and being app-specific, need to be maintained constantly in another anti-pattern I dubbed Whack-a-mole programming.
We can do better. We can rise above the app-centricness of the fedi, make a paradigm shift that helps increase evolution speed and rate of innovation and sees people's needs be better served..

Shared infrastructure is how the #Fediverse can grow without recreating enshittified platform silos.
We’re excited to share that Bonfire is working with Mastodon on two critical areas of Fediverse infrastructure: remote media storage and automated content detection.
Built around open Fediverse Auxiliary Service Provider (FASP) specifications, this work will help platforms connect to shared services instead of each having to build and operate the same capabilities alone.
Our aim is to make these capabilities open, interoperable, and available for any federated server to adopt.

Since fediverse (luckily) didn't attract much corporate attention yet, it is dominated by #FOSS culture, where people on the #SocialWeb are all "users" that are dependent on FOSS developers to serve their needs. Every dev focuses on their app features first and #interoperability second, leading to a patchwork of poorly integrated apps, and a janky overall experience. The app delivery model is not much different than Web 2.0.
A paradigm shift is possible, to a #SocialNetwork of apps and services, a service-oriented #fedi. The efforts around the #ActivityPub API can be the enabler of this shift.
In this new paradigm devs introduce solutions to a unified #SocialNetworking space, delivering new services to participants on the network. On top of a robust Protocol Layer they model social use cases in the Data Layer, integrating with services and building blocks already available.

EDIT: I want to make one thing absolutely clear. I am a committed antifascist, because of my personal history, my family history, and my country's history. Nazis and fascists are not welcome here, and they never have been.
Being accused of fascism or Nazism, or of defending either of them, hurts me personally. Part of the point of this post was precisely this: if we disagree, let's not immediately start shouting "fascism". Let's talk, look at what was actually said and done, and try to understand the situation. Sometimes there is more to it than it first appears.
After 30 years of commitment to open source, openness and collaboration, I honestly don't know how else to make my position clearer. I am deeply saddened by how this whole situation has unfolded.
Periodic official communication, just to clarify a few things.
The BSD Cafe is an open, inclusive and friendly community. A community of people who try to be *“pro, not against”* and *“supporters, not haters”*: enthusiasts, friends, people who come here to share, to learn, to discuss. Not to hate each other.
This does not mean that we all have to think in the same way. Quite the opposite: it means that we can have different opinions, discuss them, defend them strongly, and question each other’s ideas.
What it does not mean is that it is acceptable to insult, threaten, attack people, or pretend that there can only be one morally acceptable position on every possible subject.
Calling the BSD Cafe a "Nazi Bar" from the outside simply because we do not automatically censor people who have an opinion different from yours is offensive towards the hundreds of people who are part of this community. Unless you're a Nazi or a fascist. In that case, you're not welcome here.
People are, of course, free to criticise what happens here. But expecting us to attack, ban or silence someone because you believe they deserve it, and then accusing the whole Cafe because we do not, is something different.
And I have seen something even worse lately: actual calls for hate. The equivalent of *“hey, everyone, go and attack this person”*, simply because that person does not share your position.
No. This is not acceptable.
And, dear friends, declaring yourself anti-Nazi while organising a crowd against somebody, intimidating them and treating them as an enemy who deserves to be attacked means using exactly the kind of methods you claim to oppose.
I do not say this lightly. I come from a family, and from a country, with a very real history of fascism and of the antifascism that immediately followed it. These are not just abstract words to me.
Hate is not tolerated, at any level, inside or outside the Cafe. The same is true for threats, intimidation and aggression. Believing that our cause is right does not make those behaviours more acceptable.
You disagree with someone? Say it. Explain why. Argue against their ideas. Support yours with all the conviction you want. But do not aggressively attack. This is not tolerated.
And expecting everyone else to attack that person too, or considering them somehow complicit because they do not, is something different. And it is not what I want for this community.
On any subject.

The Fediverse is a non-place, but it is made of real people. Wonderful people, very often. Let’s not turn it into version 2.0 of traditional social media, where every discussion becomes a war and anyone who does not think exactly like us automatically becomes the enemy.
In the last few weeks I have seen people stepping away exactly because of this. On different subjects, people accused of the worst things not because of something they had done, but because they had not said what someone expected them to say. Some of them, for their own wellbeing, simply decided to take a step back.
We all lost something because of that. Nobody gained anything.
So let’s keep supporting what we believe in. Let’s do it with conviction, and with firmness when needed. But let’s discuss ideas without turning people into targets.
From experience, I have learnt that real change also requires discussion, organisation, patience and concrete actions. We can disagree deeply without stopping considering each other as people.
This is the kind of place I want the BSD Cafe to continue to be.

I argue that #ForgeFed #ActivityPub should support multi-types as specified in #ActivityStreams, even though how to actually work with them in a robust AP extension mechanism hasn't been fully figured out yet.
The argument for avoiding multi-type is to compromise in order to facilitate the current microblogging-heavy installed base on the #fediverse. While that is practical, it will forever keep the tech debt we have created in our fediverse ecosystem.
#Forge federation should not have a primary concern to retain compatility to legacy #microblogging apps, imho.

The CPU was baked from the snac process running at max. I shutdown nginx so that no traffic was coming through and snac was still sitting there chewing through the CPU -- even after a reboot.
It's been more than six months here, maybe it's time for me to built and migrate again.

pinging @dansup @Gargron @evan because been pondering this too: it was easy for AI vultures to scrape images because JPG PNG WEBP GIF are self-enclosed containers. SVG, though, is an image turned into code you can embed into HTML.
so, given the #fediverse is based on permissions, what if SVG is the unlogged & poisoned default?
fedi’s login and de/federation systems might be the AI deterrent we need.

A small business recently asked me to set up an Instagram account. I explained that I couldn’t do that, but offered instead to run a workshop on using Mastodon and Bluesky to reach its target audience in Berlin.
I don’t think small businesses should sacrifice an audience they have spent years building elsewhere. But what if they are starting from scratch? Can they succeed on platforms with fewer people?
Let’s see if it can work. :) Do you know any good examples?

I am seeing reports of a small number of #GazaVerified accounts hounding people who have donated in the past with posts at the rate of “one every few minutes”.
This has to stop.
If you’re doing this, your servers will suspend your accounts and we will not step in to help nor will we reverify a new account.
This is harming everyone on #GazaVerified and the reputation of Palestinians in general and we won’t be tolerating it.
And the people who sympathise with the cause and have donated in the past do not deserve to be harassed in this way.
