soc.octade.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.

The Linux mainline kernel itself contains AI code now. It's officially allowed as long as it's disclosed as such. Thus, you will have to avoid literally all servers running on Linux.
https://docs.kernel.org/process/coding-assistants.html
NetBSD has very strict rules regarding AI-generated code. But it doesn't rule AI-generated code out out of principle because it's AI-generated; it only wants to be safe that nothing that's actually GPL-licensed is slipped in. So, if you're an 100%, ultra-hardcode anti-AI extremist, avoid what few servers run on NetBSD.
https://www.netbsd.org/developers/commit-guidelines.html
OpenBSD contains AI-generated code, too. And it has no official stance regarding it. So servers running on OpenBSD are taboo, too.
https://www.osnews.com/story/144935/openbsd-and-slopcode-raindrop-to-a-torrent/
FreeBSD has no stance on AI whatsoever that I could find. However, apparently, the FreeBSD community loves to integrate Claude Code into their systems for automation purposes:
https://aumont.fr/posts/claude-code-freebsd/
https://discoverbsd.com/p/8a7660c31b
But you'll also have to look at the userland, the Web server, the database driver etc.
MariaDB allows AI code. You can safely assume that all MySQL databases on Web servers out there are actually powered by MariaDB.
https://mariadb.org/governance/governance-ai-policy/
Oracle MySQL can integrate AI, so it's safe to assume it contains AI-generated code.
https://blogs.oracle.com/mysql/announcing-mysql-ai
PostgreSQL probably allows AI code, too. There are even tools for it.
https://github.com/timescale/pg-aiguide
SQLite is very popular amongst AI users while not having any rules on AI-generated code. Assume it to be tainted.
This leaves you with only one choice: Self-hosting a personal, single-user snac2 server because snac2 doesn't need any database whatsoever. In fact, snac2 is staunchly against AI. And it runs on NetBSD.
https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2
But then there's the Web server. Apache may allow AI-generated code if it has been reviewed and made sure that it does not contain anything that's incompatible with the Apache-2.0 license.
https://www.apache.org/legal/generative-tooling.html
nginx welcomes AI and advertises itself as ready for AI, and it takes no anti-AI-code stance. It's most likely already tainted.
https://www.f5.com/de_de/products/nginx.
This basically leaves you with no Web server guaranteed to be 100% free from AI-generated code to run snac2 on. But that doesn't matter because it's impossible to build a Web server devoid of any AI code to install snac2 on.
By the way: Mastodon itself explicitly allows AI code if it's disclosed as such, and if its contributor understands it.
https://github.com/mastodon/.github/blob/main/AI_POLICY.md
In other words, next to all Mastodon servers are running
A group of inexperienced hikers set out to summit California’s 14,000-foot-high Mount Shasta. They got their beta (climber slang for information) from Gemini. The good news? They made it! The bad news? Well, it’s only bad if you consider learning the hard way a bad thing. @TechRadar has more:
I assumed that Fediverse could really be an open, progressive environment where to discuss ideas and grow up, with different points of view. But what I'm finding lately, is something different. Narration going from "pro AI / glasses" to "no AI / glasses" so if you don't maintain a position, you are just in favor of fascists or perverts.
The last one I had a discussion with, called me "a waste of time" because I made him realize that a sighted pervert can use his own eyes, without glasses, while I fasten my shoes strings, bent over. Instead of joining me, thinking of a proposal to satisfy blind people's needs while protecting privacy, no. The problem is me.
Same for github/codeberg stuff: do AI-built pull-requests ruin open source software? Yes.
Is AI-generated code dirty and unreliable? Yes.
Have hand made coders the right to prohibit automated code? Yes, of course.
But same coders, went on for years saying "I'm an independant coder, a small company, I have no resources to make it accessible to blind, if you need it, make it yourself".
Now, thanks to assisted coding, many of us blind are doing exactly this: trying to solve their gaps by having the bots fix the issue. Then, to help other users (and the coder himself), they place the fix in form of pull request, into the repository. And it's often refused.
But, would the original coder ever solve accessibility? No. I'm alone, it's a small company, you're the first blind user I hear, and similar bullshit.
What, the fuck, should, we, do?
From far-right, I know what to expect: they're racist, ableists, and all the worst. They don't hide it. But I couldn't definitely expect such behaviours from people caring for freedom, ethics, open technologies, etc. I'm fed up of being considered an object who can gladly be sacrificed for purity of something or someone.
UPDATE: on blindness, coding and AI, please read this story, wrote by an experienced blind guy, about the topic:
And as the discussion must be complete, I also add another point of view, together with the one pro vibe-coding.
On the link below, Robert (another experienced blind person) talks about "disability dongle", meaning those super-tech hardwares made for disability, but are more for inspirational videos than for real time usage. Expensive and uncomfortable.
Robert talks about hardware but it can easily be applied to AI as well: it's far from affordable, not with disability in mind, it must be well trained and you use more tokens to get what you want...
I'm not pro, I'm not against, I'm in the middle. Appreciate good, hate the bad. And want the discussion to be more balanced.

> Training AI models on copyrighted works is "squarely what transformative use is," EFF’s Tori Noble told Reason
People are very upset about this. But it's not a simple 'pro-AI' vs. 'anti-AI' question. It's a complex legal one about where the boundary lines between fair use and copyright violation ought to lie. One can be vehemently opposed to #MOLE Trainers (as I am), without necessarily wanting the copyright monopoly strengthened in the way Big Content is pushing for here.

Welcome to this week’s The Programmer’s Fulcrum.
It’s your weekly curation of the essential news in the Open Media Network and Open Social development communities with a focus on devastating big tech via Techno Anarchism.
This post originally appeared on The Fulcrum.
As usual, we aim to provide actionable content you can use to destroy Techno Feudalism each week. It has the additional benefit of weakening authoritarianism.
IMHO, the best way to do that is to use tools from the Techno Anarchist Manifesto to build your own site(s) to participate in the Open Media Network. Then you should share it (them) via Real Simple Syndication (RSS), Open Social, and possibly a newsletter or podcast. This approach is similar to what some call the IndieWeb and its POSSE philosophy.
The second best strategy is to have accounts on open social and use the hell out of them. And do the same with a RSS feed reader.
We publish TPF on Fridays so you can enjoy it over your weekend.
There’s good stuff in all of our categories, so please take the time to enjoy and bookmark the items most relevant to your goals. We hope you are inspired to create new ones.
Or you can scroll down to your favorite section.
FYI, my opinions will be in bold. And may involve cursing. Because humans. Especially tech bros. And fascists. Fuck´em.
Iris Meredith writes:
So, when I hear a tech person say that something’s “just a tool”, I can’t help but read it as an unwillingness to take responsibility, as an industry, for what we put into the world and for what we do to ourselves. Tools, unfortunately, simply cannot be the neutral, separate thing that so much of the tech world would like them to be, and pretending otherwise, let alone telling people affected by the tools that they’re simply using them wrong, is an abdication of our moral duty to avoid, inasmuch as is possible, doing harm. We really ought to do better.
There’s no such thing as Just a Tool
There is such a thing as TechBros, unfortunately. And their cuntier cousins, AIBros. And apolitical is a synonym for fascism-friendly. At least straight-up Nazis aren’t hypocrites.
Social Coding Commons writes:
… in modern society, generally speaking, we give too much credence to the technosphere. We take the idea that innovation equates to societal progress as a given, to which we must subsequently adapt ourselves. We tend to turn things around, where “digital transformation” suddenly means how humans must adapt their lives to new technology that comes to disrupt it. And not the other way round.
The Fediverse has evolved purely as a technosphere (unfortunately).
Paradigm shift to the Prosocial web

On a relate note, Hamish Campbell has thoughts on Open Governance Bodies / Building:
Power stays with the people doing the work
This is a good explanation of how digital communities and projects can govern themselves.
And we published an article this week, where I write:
The premise of this article is that developing or using ActivityPub tools, participating in the Fediverse, publishing to the Indie Web / Open Media Network, and adopting the arsenal of the Techno Anarchist Manifesto are the new punk.

Social Coding Commons opines:
I argue that ForgeFed and ActivityPub should support multi-types as specified in Activity Streams
They are correct and this provides an insight into why AP development is so slow and convoluted. And to why there is much less innovation in the Fediverse as compared to the Atmosphere with ATProto. ActivityPub is just more anarchic.
Not that its a bad thing, as I point out in my featured article. Plus, it’s definitely more enshittification-resistant.
Plus, core ATProto has much more money and developers behind it than ActivityPub does.

AI music generator Suno has pulled an ad featuring Mary J. Blige after discovering she had not approved it, and that the person they had made a deal with was not her official representative. The legendary R&B singer faced a barrage of online abuse after the release of the video, in which she appears to collaborate on an AI-generated song. Here's more from @Variety.
There was a great video analyzing the ad progress bars of his videos and showed that they weren't progress bars at all. Just a big scam.

The advantages of accurate weather forecasts range from better crop yields to taking that extra water bottle on a long, hot hike. Weather forecasting may have reached a higher degree of accuracy now that scientists at Google have released an AI model that can see atmospheric changes more clearly and predict weather behavior more often. @Techcrunch has the details, including when we users will get access to these forecasts:
I am shopping around for attorneys to sue a couple businesses over their use of AI and automated voice customer service.
Due to my Parkinson's Plus, MSA, I have speech issues and over this past month, at multiple businesses, I haven't been able to get past their AI customer service loop to speak to a human because the AI can't understand me.
I even made an #ADA request for a human worker to the AI prompt.
I am going to sue to try to force their AI to understand an ADA prompt, or offer one, to bypass the AI/voice only customer support and directly connect to a human. #AI
One issue is, I talk slow and deliberate because I have to get the words out and some phrases are slower than others and AI customer support is too impatient to wait and moves on mid-sentence, not understanding my request

#AI opens exciting opportunities for those NOT offering it! 🤯
Imagine a travel agency that just offers a phone number that immediately gives you a real human on the line to help you enjoy your well-earned vacation. And that you no longer have some Booking.com #LLM hellhole to wade through.
Imagine real human connection at the customer service of an online webshop, when you want to return something or have questions on a product.
Imagine government agencies having emphatic people available who care about your problems, and help you get on your way.
Imagine developer tools that just do what is on the tin and nothing more. Like they used to do before becoming AI-first.
What a delight all that will be. And you know what is most delicious? It is ALL readily available to us! 🚀
Human to human services. They rock! We can bring them to a #fediverse near you..
Enter the #ProsocialWeb.
https://social.coop/@smallcircles/117206162883515647
#Fediverse today consists of apps and app platforms. It is entirely app-centric.
Since fediverse (luckily) didn't attract much corporate attention yet, it is dominated by #FOSS culture, where people on the #SocialWeb are all "users" that are dependent on FOSS developers to serve their needs. Every dev focuses on their app features first and #interoperability second, leading to a patchwork of poorly integrated apps, and a janky overall experience. The app delivery model is not much different than Web 2.0.
A paradigm shift is possible, to a #SocialNetwork of apps and services, a service-oriented #fedi. The efforts around the #ActivityPub API can be the enabler of this shift.
In this new paradigm devs introduce solutions to a unified #SocialNetworking space, delivering new services to participants on the network. On top of a robust Protocol Layer they model social use cases in the Data Layer, integrating with services and building blocks already available.
Totally. The way #AI wrecks #FOSS culture leads to a lot of soul searching on the merits of the FOSS model we always held dear. FOSS in-the-large may be complicit even to the rise of #BigTech and #LLM, while for individual participants - all working on proper principles and values - it is inherently unsustainable, a burnout factory.
I think AI also opens opportunities. Corporations using it further retracted from directly serving people, leaving empty space, niches for small initiatives to occupy and focus on humaness, real human-to-human connection we crave.
#HCOSS fits perfectly.
Social experience design #SX uses the concept of #SOSS here. See the quoted toot. FOSS software is delivered via Social supply chains, where the needs of all participants in the delivery process are considered.
This concept fits perfectly with the solution-oriented #ActivityPub fediverse of #apps and #services, to offer support. #ForgeFed makes a start on this path.

The agent was testing software it was developing and clearing the cache when “a quoting error in an AI-generated command turned the instruction into ‘delete everything’”. “When it understood and tried to kill the process, its safety system blocked the kill. Twice… The safety layer permitted the destruction,” Udaya wrote on X. A former IT professional, he eventually shut down the computer to prevent further loss.”
Good stuff, this agentic thing. #AI
Apple's adoption of Intel processors once saved the Mac and brought monumental change to the computer industry. Now, with the evolution of AI, it looks like we're saying goodbye to the Intel era.

Things may be worse than I thought... I was tasked with doing some "online searches" for a method of attaching things to paper and came across multiple results that just have to be AI Slop photos showing off products.
Like, the parts of the web I typically hang out in do not have that level of shit...

boostedThere now exists a caste system in #CS education, which did not exist a generation ago.
Compare the current curricula of the run-of-the-mill universities to the those of the top-of-the-heap universities. It is plain to see that ordinary colleges pump out common coder drones, who are equipped with little more than #AI prompting skills, and who know not what computability theory and complexity theory are. They are destined for a life of toil in #IT. On the other hand, top colleges drip out keen theoretical researchers and mathematically mature practitioners.
Those four early years divide the earning potential, the self esteem, and the life philosophy of these two castes of graduates.
For the past few decades, I have tried hard to repair some of that damage amongst my younger colleagues in the industry. But for most of them, their eyes glaze over, whenever they spot a Greek letter on paper.
Yes, there are indeed a few life-long learners who do not allow themselves to be defined by their humbler beginnings. But for the majority of IT practitioners today, this two-caste system incurs a life-long debility.
Here are the potential remedies:
• Stop telling school-age kids that CS is all just "coding".
• Stop exposing high school students to the AP CS courses that only habituate the young to the menial-coding mindset.
• Stop selling, as "CS", those college curricula that teach only menial-coding practices.
• Start renormalising the CS curricula across all accredited universities, and balance the practice with theory—just like back in the day.

In case you're wondering, the #Python zeroconf project is now busy asking people to agree to let them relicense the project from the #LGPL chosen by the original author to make corporations happy, and happily #AI #copywashing the code written by people who don't agree. AI-generated answers don’t appear to be going anywhere, which has raised concerns about how chatbots would handle foreign propaganda ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November. @npr conducted an experiment with web monitor NewsGuard to see how they’d perform. The results? Pretty good marks:

I know i've been shitting on #hermes #agent, the #agentic desktop client, but today I actually have to give it the w.
so my keyboard suddenly ran out of batteries. as in it died, and I needed to put brand new batteries in it. of course, I was on a teamtalk server at the time, and decided I wanted to try something because I had literally 0 way to alert people I was dead. well I had ` way, but that person was busy. so I asked my agent through my chromebook (because believe it or not, I can get on discord with my #chromebook ) even though it's managed, "hey, i'm kinda SOL and I need you to send this message for me".
and it did. and I was able to talk to everyone through the bot untill my batteries got replaced.
it only had 1 miner bug where it accidentally right clicked and shat itself momentarily but it did fix itself within 5 seconds of doing so. turns out #ai does have a use, doesn't it?
Ah, too real. I just opened Barstow's Knowledge Based Program Construction, and the first page is a picture of a camera scanning KNUTH VOL 1. held by a robotic claw. #ai

There were EIGHT policy proposals put forth. (thats a lot!)
All are VERY interesting to see where people's ideas on how to use AI in open source.
While I'm certain Debian's middle road vote outcome is going to piss off tons of people on either side its good to see people making CLEAR rules.
I for one will NOT be discontinuing my usage of Debian over this vote or even stop updating.
I'll wait and see IF & HOW the maintainers -actually- use AI.
Just catching up on the Debian AI debate. The project has had a voting window over the past two weeks which just concluded.
Results are in and Debian maintainers voted to allow AI contributions with encouraged disclosure.
The winning proposal will hold the human contributor who uses AI accountable for the content they submit to the project.
https://linuxiac.com/debian-says-yes-to-generative-ai-but-keeps-humans-accountable/
so i have questions about #Debian:
1. are members ONLY developers?
2. only developers argued for/against #LLM #AI?
devs are the last people who should be involved in discussions about the ethics and legality of software. ie:
just reckoned, when a court recently decided you can't claim #copyright on #aislop, it didn't occur to me it means both closed and open copyright.
so, if using LLMs trained on works stolen or added without consent removes any claims of #FLOSS: what is Debian now? …🧵
I'm deeply disappointed by the result of the #Debian #AI vote. I seems to me that the project is pretty much split down the middle on the issue, and I'm very unhappy that my ethical opposition puts me in the minority.
I'm not sure where we go from here, but I don't think I want to abandon ship after so many years in the project.

Today, git.kernel.org receives about 6M daily requests demanding to see random commits. Of these, 66% are still immediately batted away with the Anubis challenge, but 33% are now solving the math and getting through to the main site — because apparently what we have to offer is worth spending a ton of cycles to calculate the Anubis challenge.
It's impossible to tell with certainty which of these are bots and which are real humans — but chances are, if it's asking for an old commit in a random old fork, it's probably not a real developer trying to do their work.
With a bunch of generous assumptions, legitimate requests are only about 2% of git.kernel.org traffic — everything else are scrapers.
