I use my phone mostly as a pocket‑sized computer rather than a telephone, though I do occasionally make or answer a call. If I want to look something up—anytime, anywhere—I reach for my back pocket, pull out my iPhone, and the world opens. It’s amazing, really, and I know I’m not the only one who does this. But if I set my phone down while moving around and suddenly think of something I want to research, which happens often, I find myself scrambling. Where did I leave it? That moment of panic is unsettling. It’s strange to feel so tethered to an object. In a way, it’s like carrying around a genie everywhere I go—one that can answer any question or fetch almost anything with a tap. Aladdin’s lamp has nothing on this little slab of metal and glass; I get far more than three wishes.

It makes me wonder how I managed daily life for so long without a cell phone. Maybe it’s similar to what my grandparents must have felt when they looked back and asked how people lived without running water or electricity. Was there really life before the automobile? I suspect most of us today wouldn’t last long in that world.

Imagine the chaos if all the cell towers suddenly went dark. It’s not impossible. Then what? Payphones have vanished, and most homes have abandoned landlines. And that’s just the communication piece. If electricity and fuel stopped flowing, survival itself would be at stake.

It’s almost comical that misplacing my iPhone can spark visions of a dystopian future—but here we are.

I got up this morning and immediately started doing things. I knew better. My first bright idea was to empty the paper shredder — a terrible decision at that hour — but I had a foolproof plan: flip the container upside down into a plastic bag. Well, never underestimate a fool. Half the confetti slid straight down my front and the rest sprinkled across the floor like a ticker‑tape parade gone wrong.

I still haven’t cleaned it up. I’m waiting for the rest of the household to wake before I fire up the vacuum. At this time of morning, it’s usually just Charlie and me shuffling around. C’est la vie.

Do auto manufacturers even make hubcaps anymore? I haven’t owned a car with hubcaps in decades. My teenage dream was a ’55 or ’56 Chevy with black rims and baby‑moon hubcaps — a fantasy from a long, long time ago in a state far, far away. Instead, I wound up with a beat‑up Chevy pickup that had “potential,” but potential costs money, and I had none. Any repair parts came from the junkyard down the street. I think the truck had two, maybe three hubcaps. Three sounds odd, but it matched the mismatched retread tires perfectly.

If someone drew a comic strip of that era, it would only need two frames: Dream and Reality.

Honestly, I’m shortchanging the story, because that truck did have an 8‑track tape player bolted under the dash — ready to blast rock and roll through two old bare speakers I wedged behind the seat. That part was pure glory.

🧬 For 150 years, lichens were biology's textbook example of symbiosis: a fungus plus an alga, working together. Simple, elegant, settled science.

Except it wasn't. In 2016, genetic sequencing revealed a third partner hiding in plain sight - a basidiomycete yeast embedded in the lichen's outer cortex. Scientists had been looking at it through microscopes for over a century and assumed it was part of the host fungus.

This explains a mystery that frustrated mycologists for decades: why they could never grow a lichen in the lab from just the "known" two partners. The cultures always failed to develop the right shape or chemistry. The recipe was missing an ingredient.

The yeast's abundance correlates with variations in lichen body plans, suggesting it helps sculpt the very forms taxonomists had been cataloguing all along.

Vögel in einem Sommerwald ist eine handgefertigte Papiercollage im Hochformat der Künstlerin Karen Kaspar. Das Bild zeigt drei rote Vögel, die auf schlanken Ästen von hohen, schlanken Bäumen sitzen. Die Baumstämme in dunklen Brauntönen heben sich vom Hintergrund in satten, leuchtenden Grüntönen ab. Dichtes grünes Laub umgibt die Bäume und Vögel. Die Baumstämme und Äste wurden mit Acrylfarbe auf Papier gemalt und dann als Collage auf den mit Aquarellfarben gemalten Hintergrund montiert und mit den aquarellierten Vögeln kombiniert. Das Sommerbild ist minimalistisch gehalten und vermittelt eine ruhige, entspannte und friedliche Stimmung.

Birds in a summer forest is a handmade paper collage in portrait format by artist Karen Kaspar. The artwork shows three red birds sitting on slender branches of tall, slender trees. The tree trunks in dark brown tones stand out against the background in lush, vibrant green tones. Dense green foliage surrounds the trees and birds. The tree trunks and branches were painted on paper with acrylic paint and then mounted as a collage on the watercolor background and combined with the watercolor birds. The summer picture is minimalist and conveys a calm, relaxed and peaceful mood. The artwork is part of my mini-series of four collages, each showing three red birds in the forest in the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter.
