#nobot is good enough... until it is de-facto #standard and there's no way back from #protocol decay, that is now common practice across the installed base.
That an actor has a profile specified in a particular way, and that that profile has a bio description, and that that bio description may contain a growing number of special control words. A growing collection of #domain-specific language that arbitrary #apps impose, is severe example of protocol decay that significantly decreases the attractiveness and value of adopting #ActivityPub. To adopt, you are required to hem yourself into very particular approaches, accepting all kinds of app-specific leaky abstractions that may be totally irrelevant to the business or application domain your project models solutions for.
On app-centric #fediverse-we-have an app developer has to force their app into a pretzel for interoperable wire exchange that doesn't look and feel like #microblogging.
This will only grow worse over time.

I would like to share my experience of building #FediHood.
While I still think that building timelines around you is an interesting enhancement for the #Fediverse, I think I was wrong about the way I did it.
Many people are interested, but not enough to create another account just for that feature. They want it with their current account.
I am happy to see #Pixelfed implementing it, and that is the way it should be done.

How do you let the rest of the Fediverse know that you've changed your allegiance?
By default, most Mastodon instances won't periodically poll your account information just to see if you've updated it. So how does the information get from your server to your followers' servers?
This wasn't immediately obvious to me, but I got a clue from reading Evan Prodromou's book on ActivityPub:
The Update activity type is for updating the properties of an object represented by the object property.
The most common types of objects that can be updated are content objects, like Note or Image. Actor types (like Person) and Question activity types can also be updated.
Aha!
You need to craft an Update message which has as its object the new user information. That needs to be sent to the inbox of all your followers.
Something like this:

Obviously the full user information is a bit more than that - it will include inbox details, public keys, avatars, etc. The published property in the Update activity should be when you changed your details - not when the account was created.
Once that was sent, Mastodon immediately reflected the changes.

It’s your weekly curation of the essential news in the Open Media Network and Open Social development communities with a focus on devastating big tech via Techno Anarchism.
As usual, we aim to provide actionable content you can use to destroy Techno Feudalism each week. It has the additional benefit of weakening authoritarianism.
IMHO, the best way to do that is to use tools from the Techno Anarchist Manifesto to build your own site(s) to participate in the Open Media Network. Then you should share it (them) via Real Simple Syndication (RSS), Open Social, and possibly a newsletter or podcast. This approach is similar to what some call the IndieWeb and its POSSE philosophy.
The second best strategy is to have accounts on open social and use the hell out of them. And do the same with a RSS feed reader.

Write a short bio.
Write some posts. Pin a couple of them.
Also, post with some tags, particularly the #Introduction tag (probably with one of those posts you pin).
This way, when people check who you are (if you follow them or they consider following you), they can see a hint of who you are (and that you are a "who" rather than a "what").

Yes, totally. I 'blame' #FOSS culture here. Most FOSS starts as hobby projects, when some dev starts to code. When the project grows and sees popular uptake suddenly countless different factors become important, requiring skills beyond coding. These are often badly accounted for. Product development, documentation, organization, PR. Here FOSS might take more example from how the business world operates and sustains, albeit generally not on the values that FOSS holds dear.
For #SX I defined the #FSDL here, the Free software development lifecycle, or #Fediverse solution delivery lifecycle, depending on context. It has different stages, where different roles and activities become important to be addressed. There are countless facets that need to be accounted for, for a project to become self-sustainable.
The challenge is even much tougher, when scaling it to encompass entire grassroots ecosystems, where everyone relies on robust #technology foundations.

This reflection by @elettrona and the discussion that followed are insightful. They raise an important question about the #Fediverse: Can we call a space diverse and inclusive if people with different needs or perspectives are treated as a problem when they challenge the community’s prevailing norms?
I recently started using Bluesky more on my personal account and have found a lot of content that I can't find here: Brazilian politics, Brazilian journalists and activists who tried the Fediverse but aren't active there anymore for various reasons, scientific topics, arts, and more.
I know people whose work and perspectives I value who tried the Fediverse but preferred Bluesky.
Should we create separate bubbles, or should we build bridges between people who prefer different networks but share the goal of finding alternatives to platforms controlled by tech oligarchs?

My most recent blog post deals with this subject matter as well, and how we might make a paradigm shift to move away from this app-centric #fediverse where "users" (i.e. people) hardly have a say in its evolution. The efforts around the #ActivityPub API may be an enabler for this shift, but there are major social challenges to be dealt with.

How this is implemented is crucial for the future of the #fediverse. An app having app-specific integrations to some - indeed ethical - payment systems, is one thing. But for instance offering native #monetization features on #ActivityPub protocol level, and not thinking *very hard* about the implementation and impact of that, can totally enshittify the #fedi in no time in how it attracts the wrong type of people with dollar signs in their eyes.
The current app-centric fediverse is the playground of devs and "users" that have to swallow what they create and drop onto the wire. #FOSS culture is a poor model for the evolution of the fediverse, where the latter is an existing social space where people, the online residents, have their home. It is much more than a pure technosphere and playground for app devs.
Fedi isn't ready to be growth-hacked. If successful it'll undoubtedly see corporate capture with Corporate Fedi the outcome, same as the web.

I've got to make a decision in my writing (microblogs, Mastodon, the fediverse).
Do I focus on posting only what I'm building and what others are building.
Or do I add in posts about the dangers of some things - namely AI, Tech/FOSS projects becoming co-opted, political pressures on various tech projects.
I want to focus on what I'm building and the problems and successes around that.
I don't want to focus on warnings or callouts anymore.
- I feel like others do a good enough job on it.
- My voice and perspective on those, while I stand by them, doesn't seem to prevent their occurrence or give or contribute to solutions to similar projects moving forward.
- I feel like those callouts and warnings add to an environment of rage bait and dopamine hits.
- I don't feel like I have a big enough picture or understanding to lend enough consideration to knock on effects and unintended consequences of discussing them.
For this microblog, I think I'm going to focus on the small areas that I'm building. Namely:
- Community Building
- Mutual Aid Projects and Initiatives around Food production and distribution
- Solarpunk Ethos, Art, Music, Aesthetics, and Initiatives
- Buddhism and Engaged Buddhism, including applying Buddhism to community and solarpunk initiatives
While I personally am mindful of generalized threats and trends, I don't think I can continue to spend effort and energy on calling them out.
I think we have enough of a solid information ecosystem here that I can leave that to others and focus my efforts on the above.

This affects the Internet.
This is the equivalent of the "rubber hose method" of decryption.
All technical solutions (read: all technology) is subject to politics. To political power. To political interactions.
You cannot rely on purely technical approaches. You have to have social approaches, too. Like. Actual policy and procedure geared around social and political group dynamics.
Like. How will we react when the US Govt requires that @jerry to shut off infosec.exchange servers.
Or how we'll react when a specific Mastodon server is declared part of a terrorist infrastructure. Will federating with it mean any other Mastodon server is now part of the officially designated terrorist network (what then of people that federate with a server that federates with a server that is classified as part of a terrorist network. And so on)
You cannot carry the conceit that tech alone or a purely technical approach will save you.

The Bio field shouldn't be for arbitrary app-specific #hashtag control words, that devs invent on-the-fly to drive their custom opt-out or opt-in mechanisms.
