Today I learned Scott Wiener, candidate for US House rep for , had his campaign put up a “parody” chatbot website of his opponent, Connie Chan, called ConnieChan dot AI, in which the people can “talk to Connie”. The chatbot “responds” as a caricature of Wiener’s opponent. His campaign also put up billboards advertising the website.

Condemnation of the chatbot rightfully came swiftly from women leaders, including Nancy Pelosi. Wiener is now taking the site and the billboards down.

The fact that Scott Wiener approved this stunt at all is a sign not only of poor taste but a fundamental disrespect for others. Using to put words into your political opponent’s mouth—a woman and minority opponent at that—is tone-deaf and disgusting.

San Francisco, you do NOT want this man—a genocide denier at that—representing you. VOTE FOR CONNIE CHAN.

London’s former notorious red-light district is now one of the world’s top AI hubs.

More than 20 years ago, King’s Cross was one of the seediest area’s in London.

      Now it’s sprouting something new.

There are around 3600 AI startups in London, which, together, have raised around $12.1 billion out of the $14.8 billion raised in the city since late July.

Sorry about that long-ish outage, but we were YET AGAIN getting smashed by AI bots. I have given up fighting them, and I'm just scaling up until can handle the load. This time the database was running at a load of 100+ because it was disk IO bound. I did *try* to live migrate it, but it was just insanely slow so I made the call to shut it down (hence the 'Something went wrong' errors) and move it offline. It's moved. Now it's running on a pure SSD-only backing store, which hopefully will handle everything the scrapers throw at us.

I'll be doing the same thing with too, shortly (but hopefully without the outage, as that's a much more lightweight instance)

I also really need to fix the status page that comes up when mau is down.

companies crow about the risky power of their products to sell the public (and investors) that they're indispensible.

I wonder if they're now also trying to overtly court regulators.

If they could get legislation saying "any model bigger than current ones is too scary" it freezes the unsustainably costly dev treadmill and hobbles new or foreign entrants to the market.

Like how Meta went all in on age verification once they could comply more easily than the next upstart competitor.

In a Wednesday blog post, Schmalbach detailed how he found content embedded in versions of some Time pages that are served to AI crawlers but not ordinary browsers. Those pages also contained tags from vendor Mobian ahead of extensive for online-only bank Ally. The FAQs include brand "facts," such as the number of fee-free ATMs associated with the branchless bank, alongside claims that Ally is "the only bank built for life today," putting it in "a category of one."

You would cherish it for its ability to destabilise our shared reality and its creation of disinformation on a scale unprecedented in human history. With it you need no armies of typists and artists to spread your propaganda. It can enable mass surveillance and thereby put shackles on those who seek to resist you. Its lethal autonomous weapons systems can perfect and normalise remote killing. It will turbocharge inequality; it is already facilitating a breathtaking shift of power and wealth from the hands of the many to the hands of a tiny number of men who – to put it in terms for which I can’t be sued – seem to hold dangerously damaged views about the value and dignity of human life."

                                                    LLM fatigue is real

My day job basically requires me to use LLMs (or, it is strongly encouraged) on the software that I develop. Now I understand why LLM fatigue and LLM burn-out happens. It is because you constantly have to babysit the LLM to keep it from screwing things up.

Babysitting is exhausting work. At one time in my life, as a 20-something-year-old, I was responsible for a group of 30 kids age 5 to 12. Every day I went home so drained that I could barely stay awake long enough to have dinner. I know from experience that school teachers perform some of the most labor-intensive work in the modern world.

It is what they call “emotional labor.” When other people are unable (as with kids) or unwilling (as with a lazy roommate) to live or play or work with you as a cooperative peer or team member, you essentially have to spend mental energy keeping an eye on them and making sure they aren’t doing something that is disruptive. That mental energy is a real energy cost, it really does consume calories and make you feel tired.

The worst part about it is that the LLM never really “learns.” Kids can learn to work and play with you. Lazy roommates can learn to live with you. But an LLM never really learns, and it keeps making the same mistakes over and over again. People who work with LLMs often end up keeping a directory of scripts they can deploy with a quick copy-paste so they can quickly re-explain something to an LLM. So the fatigue of watching over it and making sure the LLM doesn’t do something wrong is a constant emotional pressure, and it never gets better with age.

Being given a 100% AI generated score for your own mental work hurts. It also hurts because the result is presented as absolute and undeniable, with no path for appeal or inspection. A decision presented as a black-box score with no insights revealed how the score has been computed or the specific reasons/patterns which triggered "detection" to begin with[1]... A score produced by a third party which inserted itself as middleman in the communication flow between writers and readers and claims authority and arbiter status over deciding what is slop and what is not. Another layer of statistical machine learning to detect patterns/anomalies of statistical means of language generation...

In this specific case, I don't really care too much what these tools say. I know what I wrote and rewrote, over hours, and to the best of my ability (as non-native English speaker).

The myth of computational objectivity prevails. For decades it was about blind belief in algorithms, now shifted to AI models. The wider public and most decision makers neither seem to understand the difference, nor do they care about the inherent dangers. Pragmatism at all costs. The genie is out and can't be put back. The problems (if acknowledged at all) are always treated as temporary minor hurdles rather than fundamental systemic issues.

It's upsetting how Little Britain's "Computer Says No"[2] attitude and blind outsourcing of black-box classification and decision-making to machines has already been so extremely normalized and is impacting more and more of our lives, for many people/minorities in far more serious and outright deadly ways... 😭

[1] Having worked with many forms of machine learning myself, I know first hand that lack of detailed observability has been plaguing ML disciplines for decades. I think these are also some of the most worrisome aspects of more widely deploying LLM affine tech. Whilst some minor progress has been made, these efforts are severely challenged and thwarted by the exponentially growing model sizes, architectural complexity and distributed nature of agents.

If the guy trying to murder me with an axe was gone tomorrow, I have to know, what would I do?

I mean, I don't want to sound axe-murderer-happy, but he's been trying to murder me in the most bloodthirsty possible manner for so long that I just don't know what I'd do without him.

It's only been 21 hours, but it feels like a lifetime! You know what I mean, right ladies?

For the last forever he's been such a disruptive part of my life! I really feel like I'm a different person now. After having to rip out the gas line on my stove and light it with the barbecue stick my husband keeps to start the pilot light nearby, and then flambeeing the bastard with my own improvised flamethrower, can I really ever go back to a pre ax-murderer life--

                                                                      One sec, bear trap.

But after he sawed through the door of the Rat Museum I was hiding in, forcing me to run through hallways full of rats in order to escape him, will I ever live a truly rat-free existence? Without them? Without him?

I just don't know anymore. Really, is anyone complete without an ax-murderer at their back? Has anyone ever been? I don't think anyone would even want to go back to the way they were before.

Some of them were allowed to use the internet to conduct research, while others were told to use AI. Not only did the AI cohort have far less ability to recall what they wrote when asked about it later, but they also showed far less brain activity, suggesting that relying on simply doesn’t lead to better learning.  theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026
