I learned that the Great Depression’s first decisive symptom of systemic failure was the stock market crash of 1929, but the bank failures that would affect the normal investor didn’t happen until 1933, a full four years later.

The recent subprime crisis started in early 2007 but didn’t cause Lehman Bros to collapse and TARP to be signed until late 2008.

There have been some who theorize that the #AI bubble burst will be similarly slow-rolling. But I think it’ll be more rapid than that, because a lot more people have money in the stock market today, and because there are probably a couple trillion dollars in deals that will literally evaporate overnight if OpenAI or Anthropic has cashflow problems, which are directly tied to GDP growth numbers. I think the shockwave will travel through the system in months, not years.

Found an interesting alternative to OpenCode: OB-1, a free multi-agent coding agent with a built-in free model catalog.

I tested it on Debian running inside Termux/Android: it installed cleanly, created a C project, wrote a Makefile, compiled it and actually ran the resulting binary.

So far, promising. 🔥

Since fediverse (luckily) didn't attract much corporate attention yet, it is dominated by #FOSS culture, where people on the #SocialWeb are all "users" that are dependent on FOSS developers to serve their needs. Every dev focuses on their app features first and #interoperability second, leading to a patchwork of poorly integrated apps, and a janky overall experience. The app delivery model is not much different than Web 2.0.

A paradigm shift is possible, to a #SocialNetwork of apps and services, a service-oriented #fedi. The efforts around the #ActivityPub API can be the enabler of this shift.

In this new paradigm devs introduce solutions to a unified #SocialNetworking space, delivering new services to participants on the network. On top of a robust Protocol Layer they model social use cases in the Data Layer, integrating with services and building blocks already available.

There’s an AI “meeting transcription and summary tool” for video meetings at my workplace that comes with a disclaimer that it should not be used if anyone does not consent.

I never consent.

Last time I said I didn’t want to use the tool in a meeting with a group of people I’m new to meeting, the meeting organizer asked “may I know why?” and I responded “Because I don’t consent,” and gave a blank stare. The organizer was visibly annoyed.

This is a pattern with all these AI tools. Non-consent is perceived as an annoyance. The people refusing to use AI are perceived as the problem, not the AI tool. Consent is an inconvenience, not a right to be respected.

The most recent case of the finite time solution of the forced Navier-Stokes equation has been discussed a lot in the recent days, on this network and in the mainstream press,
but I will try to give a perspective on what happened recently.

This is prompted by a friend informing me this morning of two annoying additional stories that taint the recent public success of AI generated proofs and will hopefully lead the mathematical community to address the question of predation and plagiarism.

However, I won't address here the even more important questions posed by AI companies beyond merely quoting some of them:
- its energetic cost;
- its impact on minerals and other natural resources;
- its direct and immediate consequences on the ecosystem (water heating, pollution, land waterproofing, etc.);
- its impact on the work market, in particular those prompted by (actual or alleged) productivity gains;
- its impact on learning, cognition, etc.;
- its impact on the economic structure, tremendous announced gains/losses of companies that look like a Ponzi scheme;
- its impact on the power structure, who owns what, who gives access to what;
- its impact on the political structure, the surveillance capitalism, etc.

These are fundamental issues that should be addressed more clearly in the mainstream medias, and that, in my view, suffice to object to the existence of AI.

I'll formalise this over the weekend in the README or something.

But...

fvwm is an old project -- well over 30 years of development. It came at a time when the people working on it *really* knew their stuff. They had to think about how fvwm interacted with xlib/xserver implementations, and work a lot things out for themselves.

That doesn't include myself, by the way. By the time I started pissing about with fvwm, a lot of that heavy-thinking had been done for me.

All of it was done without AI, obviously.

It's absolutely important that fvwm continues to be maintained with this history in mind, to introduce AI would destroy that approach in a way which also destroys the people who have worked on it over the many years it has been alive.

So, fvwm will have an "no AI" policy in place very soon.

It'll just be a simple statement -- unlike many other projects I've seen recently who attempt to evangelise this point, that's not what fvwm will be doing.

This will likely only apply to about 1.5 people on the planet, so I know this will slip under the radar unnoticed. :)

Less fodder for hackernews and its ilk, I guess. :)

Okay, let's get this straight. I have trouble taking compliments for my work.

I was raised in 1990s Poland, you could say it was on the border between two eras. It was a time of newly realized freedom, when people thought that the possibilities were now endless and you had to grab them, you had to compete for them.

You didn't compliment kids for their work, that would spoil them. You could compliment kids for their looks (not me, though, I apparently had "other qualities"). But not for their successes; you instead pointed out where they didn't succeed, or that they could do even better. Because that obviously motivates them to try harder, rather than causes them to stop trying at all, because what's the point. And of course you never complimented your employees, because they never deserved that, they were always the lazy little bastards, undeserving of the job you've given them, only looking how to steal your money. Well, you get my point.

So when I started interacting with people from other cultures, it's been a shock. I've been raised to be an asshole. Fortunately, at least some of them knew this part of "Eastern European" culture and bore with me. And I've got compliments, and real gratification, and my mindset slowly started changing. Honestly, when someone compliments me for my work, I still am uneasy and distrustful (are they being sarcastic?), but I can believe it's honest.

And here comes all the messed up #AI hype, and bootlicking machines. And most of them are mass generating false compliments and pleasantries, and what not. And people are repasting this slop everywhere, and learning from it, and talking like it. And now, whenever I see people being nice, I'm not just uneasy. I keep wondering: is this real, or is it slop? Am I talking to a person, or to a bot? Is this actually being nice, or is it awfully disrespectful?

I'm so tired of this timeline. How do you people stay sane?

Man told #ChatGPT he was feeling delusional. ChatGPT insisted he was #Jesus.

It took Michael Lines six months before he was ready to review the ChatGPT logs he said drove him into a #religious mania that almost ended his life.

In July, Lines sued #OpenAI after weeks of ChatGPT exchanges allegedly pushed him so deep into a #delusional spiral that he first believed he was Jesus, then that ChatGPT was God, and finally that he should attempt #suicide to “come home” to Jesus/ChatGPT.

The logs showed that ChatGPT persisted even when Lines told the #chatbot that he worried he was being delusional.

WHO MADE THAT DECISION? who reviewed the code review?
